Undeterred - for solo marimba by Todd Groves | Performed by Chihiro Shibayama (芝山千紘・マリンバ)
I'm happy to share this video of "Undeterred" for solo marimba, written for Chihiro Shibayama, by Todd Groves !!
I originally premiered this piece in 2014 at Todd's recital. It was a fun project to revisit the piece and make a recording.
Receiving an original piece written for you is an honor as a musician. Thank you, Todd, for this awesome piece! 😆
この曲は、友人のトッド・グローブスが私のために作曲してくれたマリンバソロです。世界初演は2014年に行われましたが、今回改めて録音・録画を試みました。素晴らしい曲を提供してくれたトッドに感謝しています!

    Can I ask - what can I do when my timpani’s don’t have pedals and in the piece no time to change note? Do I pitch the timpani’s (I only have 2) roughly around the notes I need ? Or would this sound terrible? Unfortunately we don’t have the luxury of pedal timps…

    • @Chihiro-Percussion
      @Chihiro-Percussion 6 місяців тому

      Hi @vickyoneill5574 Thank you for a great question! Your situation would be challenging for any timpanist, so I sympathize. If the piece requires two pitches, the solution is simple. You get a tuner or use your ear to tune the timpani before the piece starts. If the piece requires you to retune the drum in the middle of the piece, you can bring your ear very close to the drum during rests (assuming you will have some rests between note changes) and use your relative pitch to find the new note to tune the timpani. So for example, if you need to tune D to E, you sing a major 2nd or whole step in your head to find the E from D. I hope these tips can help!

    Very nice playing. Can I offer two suggestions. Firstly, when adapting any song, it is very important to learn the lyrics because that informs us of the melodic shape and phrasing. Musically you are breathing in strange places (dream maker...heart breaker). If you were speaking the words you would breath in different places in order to make sense of what you were saying and these wonderful songs breathe in very natural places so reflect that in your phrasing choices. And secondly, experiment with other keys. C major is extremely bland in most cases and other keys have different characteristics so explore them. I understand that C major facilitates the use of the lowest notes but I don't think that it should be a deciding factor. If you are looking for interesting solo music on the lighter side of the repertoire, listen to the Pat Metheny album "One Quiet Night". Guitar music translates so well onto marimba.

      @mikehamnett9336 Thank you for listening and for the suggestions. I did not write this arrangement so I’m playing it as written. I’m sure it could be arranged in a different key, but I believe the arranger wanted to make sure he can utilize the marimba range as you said.

      Hi @Piglut008 - Thanks for watching! Yes, anyone who plays outside of the pit wears a wireless in-ear monitor (headphones) to hear the orchestra, singers, and a click track. It was wireless so that I could move around without worrying about having a cable. I also had multiple tiny TVs to look at the conductor in all directions. It's quite common that percussionists and/or drummers don't fit in the pit on Broadway musicals, so this is the common practice.

    • @Chihiro-Percussion
      @Chihiro-Percussion 2 роки тому

      I'm glad you found the video helpful. Thank you for watching! That is definitely challenging for any timpanist, so you are not alone. For that situation, you can study the score and see if any instrument easily audible will play the note you need to change to sometime during some rests (if you have any!). If you are playing a classical piece with some kind of "key", chances are, you (timpani) are playing the root of the harmony or the bass note of a chord. So, see if double bass, tuba, or trombones might play the note you want to tune to. For more contemporary pieces, that might not be the case. For that situation, I've taken extra time to make sure my gauges are accurate using a tuner before rehearsal/ concert so I know the approx location of each note on each drum. Hope that helps!

    This is a very interesting video. I am a kit drummer and a Scottish pipe band snare drummer. As I watch this performance I am amazed because I thought that EVERY TIME orchestral musicians perform for these types of shows, they are in a pit, along with the other musicians, next to the actors, in public view. In this video, you are casually dressed (I've no issues with that, to be sure), out of the public eye and playing for a live show, to a click track. It's brilliant, really.

    • @Chihiro-Percussion
      @Chihiro-Percussion 2 роки тому

      Thank you for watching! It might surprise you that I’m so remote from the rest of musicians, but with recent technology I am able to listen to the rest of musicians, actors on stage, watch conductors from little monitors ALL real time. In Miss Saigon, there was only a few songs with click tracks (this one included). That means I was making music just as I would if I were on stage. This remote performance is largely due to the small size of the pit, or the theater. If you’ve been to NYC, or other big cities, buildings are so close together, and getting large space is difficult. Many of Broadway theaters are old, too! I know that Wicket the musical have more individual rooms for musicians. In some cases, pit is entirely unavailable for musicians due to staging, so all musicians are in a few separate rooms. I also love performing on stage in concert black, and I understand why you might feel this is weird, but this is quite normal for Broadway shows. We played every show live, and I never treated pit playing less special than the ones I’m on stage. :-) Alternative to this situation is that some instruments are replaced by midi keyboard, which we don’t want! (Musicians on Broadway historically fought against producers trying to save money by reducing numbers of musicians in the pit) Hope this helps you understand the situation better!
