Brian Waddington Hut | Pemberton, BC
Follow along with us on our hike up to the Brian Waddington Hut, via the Phelix Creek Trail, in beautiful British Columbia.
This moderately challenging hike takes you up to the hut, where you can stay (or tent camp like we did at one of the two subalpine lakes). From there you can hike the Tolkien Range (with the peaks named after famous characters from the trilogies, such as Gandalf and Frodo).
The hut itself was constructed in the summer of 1998, and is managed by the UBC Varsity Outdoor Club. It is a spacious hut that sits in a subalpine basin at 1715m (5625 ft) beside Long Lake. It sleeps approximately 25 people, providing all-season shelter for hikers, backcountry skiers, and all other non-motorized users. A $10 per person per night fee applies, should you choose to stay in the hut, that pays for hut maintenance. Monies can be sent online, mailed, or left in the donation box inside.
While we didn't get eaten by bears (it is Grizzly country), we did get eaten by mosquitos, black flies, and horseflies; and Danielle even had her pants eaten by a crazy woodchuck.
Follow along with us on our long-weekend adventure in some of our local mountains.

Costa Rica: Hidden Hike
Переглядів 2395 місяців тому
Usually, while in Costa Rica, we are exploring hidden beaches, and climbing our favourite waterfalls, however while searching terrain on the gps one year for something different to do we came across a dot labeled chapel in the clouds. While we won’t get into it too much, as this special and totally wild place deserves a video of its own, we went there and became friends with John, the man who b...

It has been one year since we were stopped, 3kms short of Everest Base Camp. As we start planning a return trip to Himalayas, and decide what other hikes we want to include on this next adventure, we couldn’t help but reminisce on our first trip to Nepal and all the things that made us fall in love with the country and the people. It still hurts to watch the video back, and be reminded of just ...

Canada Day Hike | Tricouni + Cypress Peak
Переглядів 160Рік тому
So, we decided to spend Canada Day this year doing a two night hike to Tricouni Peak and Cypress Peak in the Squamish/Whistler area of British Columbia. We made our own trail up (and down) bushwacking the whole way up to the alpine break, getting devoured by mosquitoes the size of birds. We were rewarded by being the only ones around, able to enjoy natural cold plunges in the ice covered lakes ...

Day Eleven | Trek to Everest Base Camp With Base Camp out of the picture, we headed back to Dingboche, where we spent the next four days venturing up to Chukkung for a night, and running over the ridge to the bakery in Pheriche again for some more treats. Originally, the plan had been to hike from Gorak Shep, back to Laboche and then over to Chukkung via the Khumbila Pass. From Chukkung, we pla...

Day Ten | Trek to Everest Base Camp Day Ten started in Laboche (5100m) and continued on to Gorak Shep (5165m). From there the plan was to hike to Everest Base Camp, spend the night in Gorak Shep and then wake up really early to hike up to Kaala Patthar (a peak that offers the best view of Everest). The weather was so perfect, that everyone decided to go up Kaala Patthar, right after lunch in Go...

Day Nine | Trek to Everest Base Camp We started day 9 in Pheriche, at 4731m and headed to Laboche located at 5100m. Along the way we stopped at Thukla Pass, where over 100 memorials have been erected in remembrance of some of those who lost their lives while climbing Everest. We were a bit tired today from a combination of pushing ourselves the day before on our first hike to over 5000m, and ou...

Day Eight | Trek to Everest Base Camp Day 8 was a rest day in Pheriche, allowing our bodies to adjust to the increase in altitude, as we jumped up almost 1000m from our last stop, to 4731m. Today, we broke away from the group, with Kami taking us to climb Nangkartsha Peak, which turned out to be the first of four peaks we climbed on this trek that are over 5000m. Quick question, did you guys use diamox at all during this trip? Thanks for the vid!
No, we didn’t. Everyone else in our group did though. We took garlic supplements, and CoQ10 which are supposed to help, and drank lots of water!
Hey Guy, great video! What week we’re you there? We will be going for a couple months this winter and I’m curious about the weather in the North. Also, do you recommend Style motorcycles? Tommy from Calgary Thganks!
We were there in May and the weather was pretty good other than a couple days with crazy rainstorms! Overall, hot and humid! We definitely recommend Style Motorbikes! They were awesome.
Have fun!!
You guys honestly killed it! Can't consider that a failure! Not trying to sound aggresive but I would even expect some of my money back since I wouldn't reach base camp. I get that others couldn't make it because of health reasons but the trekking company should have you covered when something like this happen. You guys were awesome!
Thanks!!! We are happy you enjoyed the video!! And we will go back - we are already planning our next trip back and we will 100% go to base camp then!
Zach, is there any reason why you are constantly making jokes at Danielle's expense. While obviously a joke, they are in bad taste and quite off putting.
Can I ask what jokes you found off putting?
This is why, i decided to Go solo, No group, no hassle, no trouble. Unless i get myself into the trouble. Hopefully I'll get a clear weather in December.
Kami is an amazing Sherpa if you’re looking for one. kaminurbusherpa@gmail.com
What agency did you book this with so I can make sure NEVER to use them. The planning of going to Kala Pattar instead of base camp was the wrong move. Great video I feel your pain and await your next trip to EBC. mine is going to happen Nov 2025. I'm training now.
Usually they go to base as soon as they arrive in Gorak Shep, and then those that want to do Kala Patthar early in the morning for sunrise. Due to weather, we were told to do it in reverse (and to be fair we had amazing views of Everest from Kala Patthar that day that we wouldn’t have if we did it the following morning), but since people in our group got sick that night the group leader said no one can go to base. In hindsight, we should have just gone haha, but, we were being respectful and listened. We are planning our trip back and won’t run into this again; we will be booking things ourselves and going directly with our Sherpa Kami (who is AMAZING)! Good luck with your trip!!! It’s a beautiful place, full of beautiful people.
I did the trek a couple of years ago. I don’t understand why the ppl who wanted to and were able did the walk to base camp while the others waited in the tea house ? Surely there was a way to make this happen without affecting the ones who couldn’t make it. Seems ridiculous imo and I would not have been happy
Agreed! We weren’t happy either…but, I think the group leader was being overly cautious based on some people’s health in the group (including his own). We will go back though! We are working on planning our next trip back there already :)
Sorry Guys! Looks like you had fun though. Great video Cheers🍻
We had a great time!!! And, we will go back! Thanks for watching!
Your mittens look so cozy and I love you can free your finger tips. Did you buy them in Nepal?
I did buy them in Nepal! In Kathmandu! They are super cozy :) I think you can find similar ones in North America too…but I wouldn’t know where to suggest! Maybe you’ll need to do a trip to Nepal ;)
@@ZachandDanielle oh the plan is definitely to pick them up in Nepal!
That's the problem with these short organized trips. More days is always better. Not there is much to see at the Base Camp anyway.
You're the best couple, ever.I don't think I could have made it, that far;(lack of oxygen).💙💛💙 Nice photography,in this video.
Berapa biaya yang harus di keluarkan untuk helikopter dari kathmandu ke lukla, dan apakah itu biaya perorangan atau untuk sebuah helikopter, terima kasih. Saya sangat senang sekali jika anda menjawab pertanyaan saya
I think it depends if you book the helicopter as an individual and go with others, or you book the whole helicopter (you can do both). We were with a group of people, but, all people were part of our group. I can’t remember the exact cost but it was definitely the most expensive cost of our trip. Around $500 USD per person I think it was?!
Certainly not a failure. What were your altitude symptoms like?
Thank you! We didn’t really experience any, but others did. We mostly just felt more easily out of breath at times when climbing up to some of the peaks. But, some people got worse symptoms such as breathing difficulties and headaches.
I don't know if you mentioned what month or time of year it was and if you found it to be crowded. Great video Thank you
We went in April/May and didn’t find it crowded! We did see others the closer you got to Base Camp, but we never found it overly busy.
I was inviting you to try again at Everest base camp.
We will!!

how did edHillary managed to walk that mileage with Tensing . EdHillary gear are displayed at AucklandMuseum . Very heavy gears but he made it . frm NewZealand
Don't go with a group. Go0 on your own with a guide or porter. I took it slow , ay my pace. made it to EBC. Take it slow. I was the slowest.
Absolutely fantastic.... Stunning heavenly scenery.... Thanks for sharing your journey...
Thanks for watching it!! :)
Keep it up guys.. u hv pretty good content here 💐💐💐
Thank you so much!!! ❤️
no failure here, its inspired me to do it! .. did u go in may time? if so would u recommend that time of year? im thinking oct/nov for me
Thank you!! Yes, we went in May, but October/November is the other good time to go!
@@ZachandDanielle thank u
Being in your 50s and referring to majestic views as “retarded” and your wife in trekking gear as a “snow Mexican” is a bit off, guy in video.
If you are going again, a really good option to avoid the flight to Lukla is to take the original hike starting in Jiri. It is the original route that Hilary took when they conquered Everest. It is a 6 day hike to Lukla which gives a great way to acclimate and there are no crowds that you often get on the EBC route. It makes a longer trip, particularly if you hike from Jiri to Lukla and back. You could also try the 3 Peaks Trek to add another challenge. You made it to Kala Patar so could do the other climbs. I would also do the trek on your own then you don't have to worry about others. Next year when I return, I'll watch for your stickers.
Awesome!! Those are great suggestions! Thank you!!! Have fun next year and let us know if you see our stickers!!!
Hey guys, thanks for making this video, it felt like you took me along for the journey. As someone who dreams to make the EBC trek one day, I couldn’t help but feel heartbroken for you guys when you mentioned you couldn’t go to the base camp just 3 km away. So close yet so far away. I pray that you both will get a chance to go back and tick that one off the list very soon. Cheers! And what a beautiful video you’ve made! Bravo
Thank you for the thoughtful message!! We hope you make it there too!! You will!!!
Just for the record...the classic EBC trek starts in Jiri. The Lukla start is a mini version, taking about half the time and effort.
Thanks, Tips 🫡
Still a great video! Not a failure at all. Really enjoyed that story.
Thank you!! Happy you enjoyed it!
I enjoy it. I will watch It again and again. I think this please beautiful. You're locking you went to see Everest. The beautiful place in Earth. Thank you. I will watch it again and again
Thank you!!! Happy to hear you liked the video! It is a very special place in the world!
At 20:48, did he really say “but the views are retarded”??! How do you live in 2024 and not know that is an extremely derogatory thing to say? WOW.
Great video. Reminding me of my 4D3N Inca Trail. Except we had to sleep in tents at -5°C. Hot during the day though.
Thanks!! Zach did the Inca Trail with some friends a few years before we met. He loved it. We hope to go back and do it together as it’s been on my list for awhile! I was hoping to go after spending some time in the Amazon, but flights were just as expensive from Colombia as they were from home so, decided to go elsewhere afterwards. It’s on the list!!
@@ZachandDanielle Great. I think you would love it! An unforgettable and unique experiences for sure
Hi guys. Great video. May I ask how you chose what trekking company to go with. Would you have a recommendation?
Thank you! Our neighbour is friends with the owner of Sherpa Encounters who supports a lot of families in Nepal and takes groups there. Eoin the owner is great. Going forward we will just book directly with our Sherpa Kami who you see in the video! His email is kaminurbusherpa@gmail.com. He is wonderful!
You paid to go EBC. Whoever sick should have separate arrangements at their own expense like hiring other guide to bring them down. Its not right to ask you to give up.
Agreed. We will go back though, and get to see it. It obviously wasn’t meant to be at that time for whatever reason.
Awesome accomplishment. This is in no means a failure. Kala Patthar is 5545 M where as EBC is 5365 M. I did EBC in Oct '23 but still rue not making to Kala Patthar. Good luck for your next attempt.
Thank you! 😊
No failure in mountaineering. When you need to go back, you just go back. You guys did amazing. Kala Patthar Summit is much more difficult than that 3km to EBC from Gorak Shep. Well done! These are lifelong memories.
Thank you so much!!
I am planning The Island, to the top, in 11 or 12 months. My first and probably only 6k mountain. Some easier hills this summer. But you two are young, and have many hills to summit! Good for you.
That’s awesome!!! Have fun!!
Oh, well, no biggie. Been there, didn’t do your other 5k peaks, and EBC was a fun box to check. And, at the end? You mention Island Base Camp! That is our next gig in Nepal….
Thanks!! 😊 Are you going to climb island peak or just go to base? We just went to base because we didn’t have time to climb, but a friend of ours climbed it years ago and really enjoyed it!
Too many westerners choose a very difficult trek as their first in Nepal and thats unwise. I only did the 3 peaks on my 4th trip to Nepal, so I had a greater degree of knowledge and self confidence.
Only we did all those peaks in our group; some people didn’t do any peaks.
Absolutely loved this! And kami is the best guide ever👌🏻xx
He is!!!
How much did you pay for all the Sherpas ? Did you have to buy permits? Cost of permits ? Did anyone check them ? Since you didn’t make it to BC did they offer you partial refunds ?
We booked with Sherpa Encounters originally, who works closely with a group of Sherpas and took care of permits, etc. Yes, you need permits to hike/trek in the area - they aren’t expensive and your Sherpa will arrange it for you. You buy them along the trail (we show this in the video). Hope that helps.
@@ZachandDaniellehow much were the permits? By the way you look like Peter Santenello.
@E39M5SPEED We don’t remember exact costs of permits as we paid for things all together, but they weren’t very expensive.
Ur walking that fast of course you gonna get sick
We didn’t get sick….lol.
Loved
Congratulations ❤
Thank you for sharing your experience. Loved the video btw what month did you trek
Thank you!! We did it in May!
EBC is on my hit list very soon, I just wrapped up Kilimanjaro that was also rough but amazing. Do you recommend the trek company. Can you send me the name
Kilimanjaro is on our list!! We haven’t got there yet. Our amazing, singing Sherpa Kami can arrange everything for you!! He is the best! His email is: kaminurbusherpa@gmail.com
@@ZachandDanielle thank you both, I will be looking for your stickers and will reach out out to Kami
@@PaulPadilla-h2x send us a picture when you find them!!
Great video, sooo close uhh. Just curious, was there only one guide Doesn’t seem right that everyone has to miss it because of a few that are ill
We went with a group from Canada, and the leader of that group (Sherpa Encounters) works closely with amazing Sherpas and porters. He was the one that made the call for the group to not go. We don’t think that’s a typical thing - usually the group would be split, but we think due to his health at the time, some of those in the group, and the length of the hike that day he just called it off. In hindsight would he have done the same thing if we could go back in time? I’m not sure…. But we will go back again and book directly with Kami, our Sherpa - he can set everything up and then you don’t have to go with a group either.
Ohh no. 3km will be less than 1hr walk....
Exactly :(
