Okay, so a little theory here. The first knife may not actually be the witness. The unveiling is suspected to be a religious text written by the precursors, so it is likely that when the witness was on its journey, it assumed that with the power it had, it was the first knife.

Wow you guys are really desperately wanting the winnower to actually exist and not just be a metaphor, huh? Like, it’s pretty obvious that’s the case here. The witness is the one who sent us the unveiling lore book, remember, it’s just their ideology. It’s literally just saying “I don’t claim to be god, just an instrument of its will.” Doesn’t mean the god is real, guys. The witness is a cult leader shoving propaganda down the universe’s throat.

The winnower is the Veil. The gardener is the Witness. Gotta stop over-complicating everything! (The light creates the flowers and the winnower is the darkness which does its part)

The first knife implies that there are multiple knives as they did not claim that they are the last knife either.

I don't know what knives look like on his planet, but that isn't how they work here. Nobody out here is using a steak knife that can only cut steak in the shape of those little hotdog octopi from Japanese lunch boxes. Knives absolutely cut in the shape of the hand that wields them, and them doing anything else is real weird and definitely not normal. Somebody needs to explain this to the Witness, and possibly also the writing staff at Bungie. Pretentiousness is not a Band-Aid for vacuousness.

I honestly hope we don’t ever see The Winnower. The Final Shape was a perfect ending to the Light and Dark saga, and I’m ready to move on. I’m ready for an overarching story to not be about ancient gods and metaphorical concepts.

I had a feeling the witness was the first knife and not the winnower. We’ve learned this from ashas cutscene and also the unveiling lore book which is the witness talking to us. The game started with the gardener aka the traveler and the winnower. The witness stated the veil is the opposite of the traveler and if you put the two together they form one singular shape. And also the precursors the witnesses people desired a winnower to shape the gardener into a final shape. So they searched for the veil and they found the answer for the final shape. The veil has the darkness which allows the light to calcifies things into perfection. The veil has to be the winnower then because the witness and its people believed in the darkness to where they became one after they saw the light as a tool of chaos. The winnower holds the witness as the first knife is probably an expression they say. Since they were the first to experience total “salvation” in there eyes even though some disagreed

I want the true existential threat of the winnower to be expounded on in game someday. This line puts it out there but I still don’t think there was enough mention of it.

For people who are still confused, The Flower Game in the lore tab tells us that the universe is a big bang caused by an argument of two forces over how their game should “end” or “never end”. One wanted it to stop ending with the same pattern, another wanted it to have a definitive end. The first is the Traveler, the second is the Veil. That’s all this is. The Witness is just a race where their Golden Age went wrong. We, along with our allied alien races, are what happens when the Golden Age went right. Whatever unfolds, is made real from a cosmic prophecy of our Destiny. We chose a side, and we all have that in common. We chose bomb logic (togetherness with a purpose), instead of sword logic (singularity without purpose).

The Veil is the Winnower, its the nickname the precursors (the Witness before merging) gave to the Veil. This also makes sense because the precursors are the first to wield the darkness a.k.a. being the first knife. However, what this does confirm is that there are even higher entities that created both the Traveler and the Veil. Perhaps to play their "garden game". This would mean that the Traveler and the Veil are the only things that they can use to affect our world with their paracausal abilities (with certain limitations). Another thing is that the Winnower could indeed be the entity behind the Veil and the Veil is simply its extension or "hand" it controls. The same with the Gardener and the Traveler. If you want an analogy: a chess board is our physical world with chess pieces being the characters of different power level: Guardians - pawns, the Witness is Queen or even King. When pieces die, they don't just disappear, but move away from the board like Cayde described being free. The Traveler and the Veil are the hands of players that can actually interact with the pieces and move them while their creators are the players themselves who play against each other. Only things that aren't clear to me is why the Veil allows us to use its powers against itself and mainly, what the rules of the game are. My theory for that that the scales of Light and Dark need to be balanced for the game to continue, meaning - both players are allowed to add new pieces to even the odds so the game stays fair. Like in chess each player can only do 1 move at a time. When the traveler was losing during the first collapse, what happened? The ghosts and the army of Guardians was created. Now, the Witness is dead, perhaps the strongest chess piece the Winnower has ever had, and the Gardener has an insane advantage over the Winnower in the game Now, the real question is, what will the Winnower bring to the table next to even the odds?

The distinction between the winnower and veil as well as the traveler and gardener is that while it's hinted they may just be those things it's never truly stated that they are only those objects it's very likely the winnower and gardener simply made the vessels we worship and are simply seeing how they are used in the universe and how the universe responds to the their existence

I think that the gardener and winnower are so much more than just light and darkness, what if they are beyond it and that what we have been fighting for centuries now is minimal compared to the gardener and winnower, what if they are something greater than light and darkness

the winnower is the veil. here are the reasons i believe this: firstly the witness says he isn't the winnower so we know he isn't. second, The Witness says we were *both* forged by gods. The Witness was "forged" using The Veil, forged by The Veil as we were forged by The Traveler. it being the darkness counterpart to the traveler it could be considered a god as the traveler is also considered a god. hence "we were both forged by gods" I forget where exactly but The Veil is described as being unable to exercise it's will if it even has a will. unlike The Traveler, The Veils counterpart, which clearly is a sort of living being and has a will. The Veil and Traveler being counterparts I feel it makes sense for the veil to either be without conscious or simply be unable to act but sill having thought, the opposite of The Traveler. all this to show how the veil may wish to use the first knife (the witness) but being unable to because of it's nature in being unable to exercise it's will.

You can destroy the traveler, but not the Light. You can destroy the Witness or the Veil, but not the Darkness. The same can be said for a Winnower or a Gardener: I believe they’re an idea perpetuated by the Witness into doing what it believed it should do, which is the final shape and why they are the first knife. That’s why the Witness says “they cannot tell the knife what shape to carve,” as the Winnower is just an manifestation of what the Witness believes it should do with its power gifted by the Veil to be used on the Traveler.

Ever since the start the Witness has never seemed like the true embodiment of the darkness. Ever since they dropped the fact that it’s a collective consciousness/ all of the “veil” race combined into one. I think the true winnower/ source being of the darkness is still out there. I think the witness was the strongest catalyst of it since the fall of the golden age.

The Witness never claimed to be the winnower. That was a huge miss conception.
