my friend dani said that he disagrees with your analysis in a couple ways. i dont really care and i didnt listen to this song but i thought you should know. okay apparently he said i did and that someone already pointed this out but he said he did more analysis than them. whatever " i not only disagree that the narrator would have had company in the taxi, since i feel like he was being strongly rejected in every place he was before leaving, but the video is missing how it sets up a “why?” question in the listeners head to then answer in a poetic way " "Sure, it makes sense that after every rejection he heads home, and it works as the literal interim between the anecdotes, but the part that hits is the fact that the narrator made the choice to linger in that transit to live in the reminder of her a little longer !!! it’s about the yearning !!!!!! Also note the reiteration of the elongation (itself, extending the moment) to draw even more focus, and internal rhyme scheming, rather than the end rhyme schemes found in the verses, not that i posted all the verses since you can just hear the rhyming in the song if you listen. Even Alex said he have never written in such an iconic way before Cornerstone abnsjnsnd. The lyrics are so sad yet the dynamic is funny to sing, like telling a story. My theory is that his ex passed out bc most of the things he says are stuff ppl have to go while mourning.

i’ve always thought “smelt your scent on the seatbelts and kept my shortcuts to myself” is like he was rejected so he’s heading home, smells her scent in the car so doesn’t tell the cabdriver any shortcuts. that way he’s in the car longer to smell her scent
