We're tracking the 3rd song in this project. Drums, Guitars, Bass, Mellotron, Bass again ... let's get weird! About the Project: My friend Andy Guida and I recently began this new project in the studio. Here's the skinny: it starts with one of us writing and tracking an instrument and then the other one writes the next part. We're tracking all the instrumentation to tape and then doing a mixdow...

Your mom loves this song
Magic!
That's really freaking cool
Thanks man! I’m posting a full video with samples this Wednesday.
such a sick pulse in the song! i love your studio man
Thanks man! That was something Andy came up with. He had the Wah and Wammy pedals both going at once
solid sounds good
Thanks!
digging the tape sessions! makes me want to get one hah. Are the album releases on your channel also recorded to tape?
Thank you! It’s been less than a year since I got the tape machine, so it’s been a bit of a learning curve. The two album releases that are actually mine (this town, rivers) were recorded to ProTools.
Where did you get the looper and for how much?
I got it as a gift in 2010 I think. I have beaten that thing up for almost 15 years now. I wiped it down once during the pandemic. Other than that, I’ve never done any maintenance on it.
Really digin' these vids. They inspire me to get my own tracking done, please keep them coming, thanks!
Man I’m glad to hear that! We’re having a blast over here!
Great video‼️ I recently got the same machine and it’s been sounding great. Have you had the chance to check out the speed mods for this machine by installing a DP3T switch? I was thinking of attempting to do it to mine to get access to 7 & 30ips. It doesn’t have eq adjustments but I have another older machine that does 15ips but only has 7ips eq and it still works wonderfully. Anyways would be great to see a video on that 😏
I've never heard of that. If you do it, make a video. I'd love to see that!
why are you selling your octafade? I've seen listed on reverb..
Looking to pick up another Xdesk or maybe a Big Six. An Xpanda would be ideal, but they're hard to find and grossly overpriced.
sweet
Man that sounds good, nice work Ben!
Thank you! First time mixing like this!
Great work, Ben!
@@doubledealeen thank you!!
Great Job! You are Talented! Reminds me of My Dad, Such Attention to detail.
@@girolamo5637 wow! Thank you!
Great videos! I have 3 tape machines I am going to calibrate soon.
Thanks! I’ve learned a lot from your videos over the last few years. Thanks for all the info!
ha, I click play and instantly see you driving through my local area (north wales!) 0:15
We had a great view from the top floor of the bus! Beautiful countryside!
nice!!!!!
Thanks! Mixdown coming next week!
Hey cool vids and talk through the process. Just to point out - your actually showing the Zenith adjustment which is front to back tilt, Azimuth is side to side tilt/rotation to the tape. Also, you keep the cover (red tip) on the wand when demagnetising your heads, you shouldn't touch anything when doing so, but the cover is to stop you accidentally making contact/scratching anything. Cheers.
Great info! Thank you!! I will read more into the Zenith/azimuth. I never thought about leaving the cover on, but that makes a lot of sense!
I always prefer studios with a cool vibe over fancy sterile studios, great work, nice set up!
Thanks!! I agree. Muscle shoals sound and fame both have tiny control rooms but the music that came out of there was/is incredible!
@@FridayGuyRecords Absolutely agree! Would love to hear some stuff with your set up. Will keep watching!
Thank you so much for posting this! I just got my ms-16 up and running! I’ve noticed on my machine that the playback from my repro head has noticeably less highs than my sync head? Do you think this is a bias adjustment issue or an azimuth adjustment issue..? I’m completely open to any suggestions… Thanks!
That’s a great question! It could be a bias issue or a high eq adjustment. I would recommend demagnetizing and cleaning the heads and then doing this full setup. That would eliminate a lot of the guess work and resolve any adjustment issues. If head wear or old capacitors are the culprit, you will probably find that during the setup as well. You’ll be getting weird reading. When in doubt, find a good audio shop! And if that’s not an option, I’d just stick with using the sync head on playback if it sounds good! Hope that helps! Good luck to you!
@@FridayGuyRecords that's all good advice. I'd check the high frequency calibration first. If the wave forms are close to alignment, then the azimuth is probably OK. I'll do a little research and see if I can think of anything else.
What I said before: outstanding craftsmanship and great engineering! Super, Ben!
Thanks again!
Outstanding craftsmanship and great engineering! Really well done, Ben!
Thanks so much! I appreciate it!
Listen to this on my way home today. Miss getting to see you live😊
Learning new stuff. 😊
You should ask Warm about the meter. Some early models had an issue and there’s simple part you can swap to make it work right.
Thanks! I've come to peace with the broken meter. but if it's an easy fix, I'm in!
@@FridayGuyRecords if I remember right, it was a diode that needed to be replaced. Relatively easy to access, just have to pull the old, re-solder the new.
Thank you for sharing the knowledge. I may be a little behind due to as I'm still trying to learn to play the guitar. 😊😂
Me too!
@@FridayGuyRecords I wish I knew a really amazing bass player.. Something tells me you just may know one. 🤣✨️
Awesome Ben!
Thanks!
hey, that's a lot of pro & cool diy gear and tips ! thanks for sharing ! like what u doing !
Thank you!
Great work! Good on you, plenty of us would like to be able to do this.
Thanks! You can do it!
I'll believe it when i see it
i just using built in fl reverb plugin tbh
This is sick
Your video and explanation made my day, bro..! We definitely need to hear an example of that plate verb. 💨
Thanks! I'm working on a demo video now. Any requests on what to send to it? Vocal? Snare?
@ I’m so glad you asked, and literally the two first thoughts were vocal and snare…. Of course, if you have a nicely recorded Tele or Strat, it would be awesome to hear different levels of reverb from nearly dry to almost totally wet. This is exciting, truly can’t wait to hear this
I did work in a recording studio that had an EMT plate hung from the rafters in the attic of a strip mall building. When the fire trucks from the nearby fire station would roll, we could hear the sirens in the reverb return. Does your plate pick up any sounds when the toilet flushes?
yea and it sounds like sh*t!
what in the worl
haha this is exactly what every tracking session is like for me:)
@@grassvalleydudes thank you for the validation! I’m glad I’m not the only one lol
Okay but why?!
A very nice plate Reverb effect for his home studio.
@@TheWorld_2099 Why does it have to be under his house?
@@Norsilca good question… That’s probably designed to isolate it from as much external noise or vibration as possible. Those units are very sensitive, it would pick up vibrations very easily.
@@Norsilca it doesn’t ‘have to’ be under the house.
Would love to hear some clips of it! Really cool setup!!!
I just posted a new video with samples and the final mix
@ on it!
Nice home studio.
Thank you!
do this and it will sound so much like an EMT it isn't funny glue the ONE driver (voice coil fro a small 8 ohm speaker) offset from the middle, and the peizos at offset locations on the plate, so no distantce to the edge is not the same for any element
So, offset them from the edges and from each other?
@@FridayGuyRecords yes, you want the piezos to be away from harmonic nodes ..standing waves to avoid as much as possible a ringy sound...more even
The exiters attached to the plate have too much mass! Glue a small voice coil to the plate, just 1. and suspend two or 3 stacked neo magnets inside the coil by an external brace ....use peizos for recovery
Cool set up!
@@RiotHomeRecording thanks!
oh sniggity snap son....i do believe i found you
hahahahah I found you Ben
Ahhhh! That's my uncle!!
