I like your courage, your great demonstration of sekf-esteem and for having shown resilience. It is true that we cannot love others if we do not love ourselves. A big thank you to you for showing the way to the new generation because the latter always needs role models to identify with, and as an African proverb says so well: "It takes a whole village to educate a child". A thousand thanks again for this pride that you give to children.

I am originally from the country in Mississippi. I had moved to Orlando in 1995. My rite of passage hair style was Halle Berry in the 90’s. I was working as a CNA and would spend my whole check on going to the beauty shop. I look back at my drivers license and I was cute back then. By 1997 or 98 I did my first big chop. I had a friend that I worked with sometimes she had cut her hair and I thought she was so cute. I was tired of the up keep of going to the beauty shop. So I got the courage to cut mine too. I wasn’t as cute as she was. But as time went on I thought I was pretty with my hair cut. Then in 1999 I moved back to Mississippi. And people didn’t appreciate my choice of hairstyle. But I loved it. And for some reason I started pressing my hair again some time in 2000. That didn’t last long because I decided to enlist in the army and I knew I was not going to be able to take care of my hair. I found an old school barbershop downtown in Jackson and I walked in there and asked the man if I can get a haircut. He was surprised because I had curls all over my head from the marcel curling irons. He didn’t believe me. I told him I am getting ready to join the army and I won’t be able to take care of my hair in basic training. So he cut it, I got up to pay him and saw all of my hair all over the floor. And as I walked he wished me well and luck. My family had no idea I did that!!!!!!! But I was ok with it because I had done it before when I was in Florida. And I did it again when I was soldier. My unit was always on me about my hair. So I can relate to all of these women in this video. I can say I will never be cutting my hair again. I’m proud of my natural hair the way it is now. Also if God wanted me to have straight hair God would have given me straight hair. People always like telling others what to do and to control them.

How you got natural hair and feel so strongly about people, black people in particular keeping natural hair but you got make up on. Isn't that just picking and choosing how natural you want to be. Why don't you own you as a person in all your natural beauty fully and not just hair. I'm with natural in it's fullness not just hair

Sorry they didn't touch on the dangers of relaxers. I noticed the darkest bm on the panel was the one to tell the brother he was for not giving women that relaxed their hair the same attention. SMH The interviewers questions were odd to me, wonder if he was black or not.

Hair can take you on a journey of "self" discovery 🤷🏽‍♀️observing self in the mix of natural,braids,relaxed,permed,extensions,long,short....all versions have different routines..Its what works for you,. I have soft natural hair, for past 15yrs,wouldn't ever relax or perm it Wore extensions for 10 yrs, which damaged it,so now my mantra is in terms of keeping it healthy, less manipulation the healthier it will be....

So glad to see this changing. I remember the struggles our BLACK church had accepting black hair in it's natural form. They actually called it a fad, or wordly to not straighten your hair. They were so influenced by European societal norms. I love my natural hair and went natural 15 years ago, despite my former church's directives. Maybe this acceptance will help us increase our Self Love. An older generation does not understand this. Love this sisters, let's keep going...not only our black women, but our boys and girls are made to feel less than in school. And unfortunately some of these religious schools are insane about it.

I love this woman I did the same I said I was not coming back I used to have a light curly perm (not left on long) I went to the barbers less argument - asked them to cut it off to start again and they said "are you sure" cut is 2" at a time, and then it was short, with lines for years. I do that periodically cut it all off for a different look and it is very liberating. Hairdressers do not like it when you stop coming for chemicals if that is their forte they don't even tell you what they put in it to steam, I asked the hair supply shop and bought it myself as i never went for the "in between treatments - which always confused them "your hair is great so soft you look after it so well..." as if paying was the only way. Weird. Love this documentary
