Caterham 310R 2024 - Brands Hatch Race 1 - P11
A race to forget and the start of a frustrating weekend. Slight contact (around 13 mins) folds and wedges my rear wing onto the tyre. This was effectively the end of my race with the friction impacting top speed and leaving me at the mercy of the chasing pack.

Having started P11 I managed chase down and hook onto the lead pack. Going for a move on the last lap ended in disaster when Harry lost the rear and sent me airborne. Managed to cross the line with damage but my championship chances are very much in jeopardy after this race. I was left ruing a fluffed gear change out of Druids as otherwise the incident would never have happened

Following the crash in Race 2 there was frantic work from from Matt Blyth and his team to get the car repaired and out in time for the race. I reached the assembly area 30 seconds before cars were released onto the circuit! This has to be up there with one of the craziest races I've competed in and lots of fun. Super close racing throughout and at points could really sniff the victory. There was crash on the last lap which took out the top 3 and I washed wide with Lars on coolant that had been dropped during the incident. This enabled Blair to take the win at his homeland. First ever visit to Knockhill. What a circuit! However it was a baptism of fire with only 30 mins of testing in each circuit configuration. I generally felt on the backfoot so was therefore happy to qualify 6th. My race plan was to keep my nose clean and hopefully pick up some pieces. I was over the moon to take 2nd place after a crafty move on the last lap.

The second race of the weekend saw a change to the anti-clockwise circuit configuration. Similarly to the race in the clockwise direction I wasn't feeling like I was fully confident so planned to stick on the back of the leaders to attempt find some pace. Started P2 in unpredictable conditions but it stayed dry for the race. Some close fought racing and excursions onto the grass trying to get past Lars until I eventually succeeded (around 13.30 in the vid) - Probably one of my best overtakes! In the meantime Harry had scarpered so Taylor and I had to fight it out for 2nd place. Go Pro failed so no rear camera unfortunately.

Unpredictable conditions once again with the track damp and drizzle in the air for the first half of the race. Harry again managed to break away as myself and others scrapped. For the last few laps I managed to shake Taylor and could put in an effort to try and catch Harry. However, we both had similar pace and I was just too far away to benefit from his tow. Happy to take P2.

Rain started falling as we lined up on the grid and going into Park corner I carried too much speed and ended up on the grass putting me at the back of the field. Another great race. Again, felt on the pace and managed to execute the last lap and particularly the last two corners as well as I could have hoped to take my second win of the weekend. Probably the most successful weekend of my motorsport career!

After Race 1 I was confident I had the pace for a victory and it turned out to be a reversal of the day before, with me pipping Taylor this time by just 0.008 seconds for the win. Some great racing in the meantime to get there.

Following a DQ from qualifying (on a technicality) I was thrown to the back of the grid. Quite annoying, but I was looking forward to the challenge of trying to reach the front pack. Reverted the setup of the car to what I was running in testing and immediately felt more comfortable. However, the pace was serious and to stay with the leaders was a challenge. First race of the 2024 season with everyone now running Toyo tyres. The car had felt great in testing the day before and I stupidly (with hindsight) made some tweaks to the setup before the race. Struggled for pace, although I had some good battles particularly with Lars at the end.... just a shame we were fighting for 6th place.

Felt like I had a shot of a podium in this race. It almost materialised but the final two corners were my downfall- I was heavily distracted by Lars and Phil making contact through Corum which put me onto the dusty side of the track and then I missed a gear on the exit to the final straight which allowed Taylor through to take an impressive 4th place having started in last place.

Man I love those caterhams! I’d love to take part in such fun events but we don’t no more amateur racing series here in Germany, even the traditional vln has become pretty expensive to race in over the last few years. In the mid 2000s my 15 year old BMW with a cage was all I needed. Nowadays even the entry level cars are modified quite a lot and there are no more old cars in the field. All the privateers are people with thick wallets and modern touring cars. Even the Dacia entry has gotten a 300hp Renault racing engine for this year.. Last year that was the only budget car and it’s more of a joke anyways. Those caterhams are dream racing cars to me, traditional lightweight open roadsters at a somewhat affordable price if you do your work yourself and buy an older model. Keep on racing and have fun, thanks for the video!

Unlucky on this one, been enjoying the Caterham racing. How come you didn’t take part at Knockhill?
Hey Jack. Glad you've been enjoying the racing. I'm only participating as a guest driver this season as family life is getting in the way! On that basis, Knockhill was just a bit too far away. Will be competing at Silverstone in a couple of weeks though.

Cheers Stu. It was a good race. Who knows?! It would have been hard work to get that podium if they hadn't thrown it early that's for sure. Chances of some degree of contact between everyone would have been high in those final few minutes too, so perhaps a blessing in disguise?!

Surely the black Caterham with Williams on the rear got penalised for double/treble defensive moves and exceeding track limits in the last chicane?
Hi Geoff, I think all of us in that pack got picked up for track limits infringements. Though none got penalised. It was hard defending for sure, but in my view fair on the whole.

@@tomwyllys 99% upgrading to 270's as not a fan of the mixed grid format - Brands will revert back to Group A,B & C again which spoils it for me - hoping to give it a go as a 270 at Snett - and then stay in 270 in 2021 as should all be back to normal then. Blair said you had an awesome save in the first race when you looked to take him on the last lap in think - he said the footage should be good as he was amazed you save it - be good to get this uploaded ;-) Probs see you at Brands - catch up soon ;-)
@@JohnCoxUK I'm not a fan either and really not keen on the Grouped races - we should all race everyone twice. Surely there's enough cars in both grids now to separate them (I think there were 20 or so 270 entries at Thruxton)? The (failed) last lap move / save is at the end of this vid. cheers mate, mega race! Its great to see it from your perspective, your all about apex speed and nailing every corner. I'm all about late braking and parking my car in the way with a focus on exit drive, knowing the tow is waiting for me. It could have gone either way. I look forward to Brands where I'll have to up my pace to stay within touch!

Magnus Sæthre it’s a Vauxhall C20XE (otherwise known as the Redtop). I put the GoPro microphone next to the throttle bodies which is why it sounds nice 😎
