Discovering Alabama
United States
Приєднався 10 вер 2018
Discovering Alabama, the longest running and most popular locally produced show on Alabama Public Television, appeared in Alabama homes and classrooms in 1985, when Dr. Doug Phillips first invited viewers to “Come along with me as we explore the wild wonders of this land.”
As an environmental educator for the Alabama Museum of Natural History, Dr. Doug knew that the natural world could bridge the disciplines for a cross-curriculum approach to teaching. Discovering Alabama programs are correlated with the Alabama Course of Study and, with accompanying Teacher Guides, support the teaching of K-12 academic requirements for science, history, social studies, geography and environmental education.
We encourage viewer response and Dr. Doug prefers that correspondence be in the form of an email or a written letter.

Insect Wonders
The larger world of insects, including the millions of insect species that bear no particular threat to humans, plays a crucial role enabling the essential processes of our planet’s life support system. Yet we humans are responsible for many activities that are harming and destroying vital insect populations. “Insect Wonders” highlights the often amazing attributes
and capabilities of insects, and underscores the importance of insects to the sustainability of life on earth.

Indian mounds in south Alabama and Northwest Florida were simple to survive storm surg and Indian mound more north were near rivers so they had to avoid floods I never went to college but damn even I can understand that do you really think Americans are stupid.
❤ 1st comment? 6 years old this program is posted says mountains! 😢
❤ enjoyed all these videos, to old and broke to travel now
❤❤❤❤❤Awesome show
❤ Glad this is posted, never knew of awesome alabama. Iam fla grown!! Go figure
This river looks like a sewer. It really looks that way after a big rain. It is a shame. There will be plastic bottles, basketballs and other trash all over the river that gets washed into it.
❤❤❤❤ only #4 comments as of today😮 sad!! Shamful to watch destroyed landscapes
I have visited Moundville twice and really enjoyed the experience. It is a must-see for anyone visiting the area. Thanks!
They buried body in shell mounds to because the shells protect the bones.
They!? College boys and girls? Say its the astecs exspantion from long ago. Killed folks dont talk
The mounds go all the way up to Mound Minnesota! I visited Cahokia for the first time this year. I was blown away! Monks Mound is so large that when I photographed it I couldn’t make out the people on the top. They are so small in comparison! These were clearly not an uncivilized people! They spanned through the whole US East of the Rockies.
Cahokia is on my bucket list. I have visited many mound sites in the Southeast, but I can't wait to see Cahokia.
It looks like shit. There is not tree species diversity, not much shade from scorching summer sun, no flowering dogwood, eastern redbud, tulip poplar, magnolia, and there are no cooking woods like hickory.
❤❤ wilderness is awesome like the longleaf pine!😊
Apparently you do not know or appreciate the diversity of nautre and forests in Alabama. We have a very diverse landscape. Everything is not as you think it is supposed to be.
@@billybob7275 This is why I laugh and cringe at people like you when you whine about southern pine beetles eradicating entire pine forests. The one thing that would protect your forests from that (tree species diversity), you oppose.
Damn you dumb@@KieraCameron514
I believe that there are mounds over here in downtown Decatur Alabama, right near the river. Fascinating history, thanks for posting.
No one cares about Mobile prices !! Leave it alone. Dauphin is great place to relax and stroll. It's the island atmosphere people come for. All prices shown are 2 years old.
This really what my school got me watching
Excellent. It made me want to go and see these sites and museums. Thank you.
There are two such mounds near Vernon, Alabama in Lamar County.
Twelve thousand years we've been here a lot longer than that we were here when the white red heads came
As an Alabama fossil myself, I approve of this program. Thanks Dr. Doug, for all your service that is beyond the call.
Thank you for this uploading truly amazing
Great video....Thanks
I grew up watchn this show I loved it then and still do
Eastbound and down, loaded up and truckin
I was waiting for southbound and down to start playing
I live in Mulga on property previously owned by TCI less than a mile from Bayview lake. We see "guest workers" fishing and swimming in Bayview and village creek.. we just let them be lol
Very Good! 2nd Watch...
Alabama has absolutely beautiful forests.❤
Yea to bad timber companies have come here and stripped all the old growth hardwood that kept this land beautiful provided food for all the wild life now or land has been stripped and planted with pine trees that ain't worth does nothing for the wild life and has turned beautiful land into shit land
Blud’s Yappin about trees like he’s the Lorax.
This state has such good geology. Makes it fun to walk about and explore the hills and valleys
NASTY looking copperhead snake! He's lucky I didn't come across the venomous serpent!!
Love the DOG!!

I found a mound in Stockton that isnt on the registry. Its on the management land here in Stockton.
We are part of the land, we forget that with all business of life itself. It's easy to preserve wildlife. Don't put a business or house on it and it will pretty much take care of itself.
Beautiful ❤
I can't STAND that Alabama accent it sound so Idiotic.
I never visited Alabama but I'd like to see that beautiful state I must admit.
Lebron built the mounds
Ive explored all the Sipsey Wilderness and Bankhead NF, starting in the 1990s up until my double knee replacement In 2007 about two years after my hip was re[lacement. You really need to hike to explore the area.
Excellent except for the inexplicably inaccurate depiction of the dinosaur-exterminating asteroid hitting the present-day U.S. East Coast instead of off Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.
😂 debating things is what we do best❤ hot air wasted😮
Last Governers..
Is there any way to find out when this was produced?
This is the best Channel on UA-cam.....at least for this old (76 yrs of age) Alabaman. I sit here every day soaking up all I can about our awesome State. I will continue to do so until until the "Big C" tells me my time is up. GOD has been kind to me thus far.
Trying to locate painted bunting to photograph
I wonder why you haven't mentioned the Indian burial mound in Lillian Alabama. Do you not know of the mound or you just don't want people to know about it. I do know that it is on forever wild land and it was on the Lillian swamp hunting club.
Even though I live in GEORGIA; ALABAMA'S my favorite STATE. I love ALABAMA ♥️👍😃
It is a pretty place, been there many times dating back to the early 80s.
