Thanks for this review, Roy. I have the Smartdrive (the MX1 version, not the MX2 like yours) and have used it occasionally for a number of years. I am a paraplegic (T12) and so am able to push OK on a day-to-day basis. The point you make at the end about losing muscle tone is a good one. It would be easy to use either of these devices almost full-time but, in doing so, the effect on your general strength and fitness could be very noticeable. I prefer to keep my Smartdrive off the chair until I definitely need it for hills or distance. Most normal situations I don't need it. Thanks again.

My neurologist at one point asked one of her colleagues who recommended vitamin B6 (pyridoxine I think). They've done studies in rats where it's helped with the startle response, but I don't know what dosage would be effective for adults. I've been taking it for a few years. Hard to say if it makes that substantial of a difference, I think if it does it's very subtle. But as I see it, vitamin b6 comes with other benefits too so I've chosen to stay on it. If anyone is interested, here is the link to the study. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8336216/ Thank you for making this video and talking about it. It's always been something I've had a hard time explaining to people and have a lot of shame and embarrassment about

I, too, have spastic diplegia cerebral palsy and I learned that most if not all spastic cerebral "palsists", if I can use that, have the same response and most of the time, for me, my body moves as though I was startled but I was unaware of it. I usually get more startled due to the fact that my body suddenly moved without my permission or intent. I prefer, when it happens, just act as if it didn't happen. It happens when I least expect it and it can happen when I can expect it (like seeing lightning and expecting thunder). It also happens when people touch me. This has always been the case, however, being molested doesn't help (I think I'm more jumpy when someone touches me, like a pat on the back, unexpectedly.) When I used to walk, car horns could cause me to fall because the jump in the body causes me to lose my balance. People cannot overstimulate the response to exhaustion-- if that was the case, I would not have it today as I was bullied with that pretty much every day of my life in public school. But I did take that idea and used it to my advantage many years ago (like in the 1990s). I surround myself with sound as in I make myself available to bands (I was involved with my cousins' band, then when I returned to the Roman Catholic Church, I got involved in the youth band and finally, now that I am no longer a Roman Catholic but still a Christian, I got myself involved in the Church band), I play music in my vehicle, I usually have something on like a radio, tv, and anything that produces sound to muffle unexpected sounds. I know it sounds counterproductive but that helps. To my knowledge, there is no cure or treatment that is worth taking a risk, like you said, taking medications will only add to the problem (side effects).

Thanks for the video Roy! I am thankful you made a video comparing these units as I think it’s time for me to take the plunge into power assistance. I know what you mean about saving your shoulders. At 52 mine are feeling the years. Thanks again the video was well done and helpful. God bless.

I don't want you to feel like I am discounting your perspective. Everyone is a burden to others whether they realize it or not. It may not be in the same way as someone who is disabled or it may be in a very similar way. Dealing with anyone takes patience, sometimes more than it feels like we are ready to offer but everyone has shortcomings and strengths. Someone could be able to run a five minute mile but lack the ability to reach out to a friend they know is struggling. Others may have the ability to predict the support others need but require assistance to walk. No one is perfect but we all have something to offer and I hope when you feel others look at you as a burden you realize they also see you as a rock to lean on in ways they don't always know how to express. When you feel down I do hope you remember the ways you have impacted others, not as a burden but as a beacon. You are cherished by many even if they don't say so as often as you deserve or know how to form into words. We all struggle in our own ways, sometimes it is just more apparent to others how we are affected by those struggles. Remember good sir and any who may read these words. You are loved even if those words aren't spoken, and you are a strength that others rely upon even in times you feel weak. We all have burdens we bare but sharing them helps strengthen us all.

Roy I appreciate you!! My Great Uncle had the same condition, I grew up helping him out with certain chores. He lived in a very small village and everyone always offered to help. I hate to think if someone treated my Uncle Larry like that because he was an amazing guy just like you!! I hope you have a blessed day Roy 💯🙏
