The Perils of Black Liberalism with Too Black & Momodou Taal
In this episode we discuss the role of Black liberalism in the US political landscape, particularly its relationship with the Democratic Party. And how Black liberalism often neglects the interests of the black working poor in service of the ruling class. We contemplate the influence of social media on political discourse and the Black elite’s capturing and commodification of Black cultural expressions in service of empire at the expense of the global working-poor. We touch on Black apathy towards internationalism and passive or active support for imperialism and how this behavior of betraying the interests of the oppressed is learned domestically before being applied internationally. We touch on the petit-bourgeois character of electoral politics and how the poor are largely disappeared in mainstream political discussions and processes. Momodou Taal is a PhD student in the Africana department at Cornell university. He is also the host of The Malcolm Effect podcast. Too Black is a poet, member of Black Alliance For Peace, host of The Black Myths Podcast which can be found on Black Liberation Media, he’s also the author of Laundering Black Rage, and one of the organizers of the Campaign to Free the Pendleton 2. In a post-civil rights era, how much do ideological labels actually matter when it comes to the black electorate? Are black liberals actually liberals when it comes to policy and our voting preferences? Or does the black electorate believe itself to be pragmatists? We voted for DLC/New Democrat Bill Clinton overwhelmingly. The DLC was conservative (a huge turnoff for black voters), but Clinton was an establishment Democrat (a huge hardon for black voters). Secondly, we still trust the black (mis)leadership class - even though we recognize they are misleading us - when voting. Thirdly, we still believe that visibility politics is representational. Fourthly, we will always vote for the lesser of two evils.

Networking and coordinating local mutual aid programs is something that needs to be done, certainly. But in and of itself, this will not lead to an anti-capitalist revolution. There also needs to be a lot of agitation and education around what the common source of the problems we face is -- and building a higher level of consciousness and political unity on that basis.

As a prosecutor, Harris sent thousands of black women, many with untreated mental illness, many for nonviolent drug possession, to prison. Her policies jailed the black mother of a child with sickle cell anemia. The mother was charged with promoting "truancy" when the girl was missing school due to her chronic, deadly illness.

Seriously useful conversation. I would like only to add that I believe even truly radical and righteous academics are not quite seeing universities for what they are and have always been throughout the modern era . 1. Land grabs. 2. Local mandarins. 3. Massagers of middle class opinion in the interests of developers and the upper class generally. 3. Holding pens for dissent, a place to capture, keep and eye on, and discipline movement intellectuals, who live on a share of the endowments, ranging from very meager to very generous. 4. Workshops for propaganda, on behalf of corporations and imperialists. 5. In certain cases simply large hedge funds. 6. Centrally, reproducers and sustainers of the class system, through both direct gatekeeping and also the strategic recruitment of new (ideologically obedient) talent.

yeah right on. I am not gonna stop hating ecocide and g*cide and land theft and colonial violence and "spiritual" lies about my vulnerable divergent family with a target on our backs, unable to safely travel and live and work and get health care in half of our own country. Not gonna stop hating all that. I am gonna love the crap out of the people fighting it with me, and love the crap out of the suffering earth and the brutalized people.

edit: not "our own country". The country my indentured ancestors from both northern england and australia were shipped to as children to work unpaid for midwestern landowning families. The country I would rather not be in, the country I know must be returned, as massive and as unimaginable as that problem may appear.

OMG thank you so much for this episode! I love all your episodes; while I have learned a lot from all the previous episodes, this one had a one very striking point where I was fully hitting a wall with hippies in festival community in occupied 'australia' claiming they are anti-zionist and refusing to take known hasbarists off their headline. while alarming, I am glad that its something of a phenomenon because for a second there I thought I was going crazy with the level of cognitive dissonance which is saying a lot given the psychopathology in that community already.

Another amazing and nourishing conversation!! Thank you Jared & Lara! When I was in the military, I attended a training course where the actual repeated mantra by instructors and leadership was, "hate & anger." It can be a very powerful and sustaining (idk how long-term) energy. Adrenaline is another, although having high cortisol levels long-term is devastating to physiology. "The worst thing we can do is hate" mentality reminds me of those who complain about "verbal obscenity" whilst genocide is ongoing; focusing on "politeness/manners," like wtf? What's more offensive? Righteous hate, resolved internally, may be sustainable long-term. Undergirded with revolutionary love...
