My Journey on Two Wheels, One Trail at a Time
Mountain Biking Mt. Elwell; Epic Lost Sierras Trail!!!
I am definitely NOT a fan of hike-a-bikes. Even here in SoCal, when somebody says there’s a short hike-a-bike to get to a really fun trail, I typically pass. Why?...it’s because the juice is not worth the squeeze. However, when my friends from Bellingham mentioned a trail in the Downieville area that has a hike-a-bike on it, but also has an amazing downhill, I was IN right away. Again, why?...if you have ever ridden Bellingham, you know that they have world class, incredible mountain bike trails up there. So if they think this trail is worth it, then IT IS!
Welcome to Mt. Elwell; one of my “must ride” trails when I’m up in the Lost Sierras. The trail is a shuttle; you leave one vehicle down in the town of Graeagle, and drive the other vehicle up to the beginning of the Round Lake Trail Loop (up in Lakes Basin). From there, it’s about 2 hours of riding and pushing your bike to the peak of Mt Elwell, but you are rewarded with amazing views on the way up, and amazing single track for several miles down. My strava for this ride is here: www.strava.com/activities/12526953670

Testing The New Rockshox Charger 3.1 Damper on the Zeb
Переглядів 673Місяць тому
We mountain bikers are always tinkering with our bikes to see how we might make the rides just that much better. About a year ago, I bought the Rockshox Zeb Ultimate for my Santa Cruz Megatower. The main reason was because of the new Buttecups on the Zeb (which the Lyrik on the bike did not have). In the end, that was a bad choice, because while the mid-stroke on the Zeb was better than the Lyr...
The Luge: 1 of the Funnest MTB Trails in Orange County!
Переглядів 813 місяці тому
There are many trails in Orange County that are reasonably called "iconic". Telonix, Rock-It, San Juan...and of course, The Luge. This video was from a mountain bike ride we did way back in March that included Joplin Trail, but I misplaced the sd card. Well, I finally found it and decided to post a "full pull" of this iconic trail. I miss the days of wet weather, but we're only a month or two a...
Joplin Trail & The Luge: Technical MTB Singletrack in Orange County
Переглядів 5216 місяців тому
Hi everybody, we're back at Joplin this time! I had a combination of traveling for work then getting sick so this was my first time on the mountain bike in almost a month. So why the heck did I pick a technical and sketchy trail like Joplin?...because the weather was perfect for an all day ride! Joplin is only 2 miles long, but to access it, you need to climb to damn near the top of the Santa A...
New Year Same Me - Double Loop in the San Gabes
Переглядів 17010 місяців тому
First ride of the year for me! The holidays are over, no more overtime at work, I'm finally getting over being sick (sort of), and I can get back on the mountain bike! There was some recent rains, so we decided to try and get some hero dirt in the San Gabriel Mountains, located within Angeles National Forest. We climbed up Fern Truck Trail, down Brown Mtn Road, up Mt Lowe Railroad to Inspiratio...
Can I Ride 5 Parks in Orange County in 1 Day?!?!?
Переглядів 290Рік тому
As always, thank you for tuning in to my channel. Today I decided to tackle a ride that I mapped out over a year ago; I'm trying to hit up 5 different riding area in Orange County...all on the same day...and all on the same ride! I parked at Santiago Oaks, and I would phone somebody to come pick me up when I was done. This would be a long day in the saddle, and the weather was A LOT hotter than...
Hot Lap: Lynx Trail in Aliso Viejo (Laguna)
Переглядів 623Рік тому
The good thing about waking up at the crack of dawn is that I'm able to put down some really good uninterrupted runs on the local trails. Today I decided to ride Lynx Trail in Aliso Viejo (right next to Laguna Beach here in Orange County), and while I wasn't trying to PR the trail, I did want to put down a decent time. I used some different GoPro settings to try and get the colors to pop a bit ...

Jameson Creek trail is on the ridge just west of Elwell, another classic. We would ride from Graegle up Frazer Falls rd. Then cross over Gold Lakes highway near Gold lake and on up from the south side. The hike-a-bike isn't all that much and so worth it. Now that I'm older at 62, I ride an E-bike and it takes me even farther & higher. Theirs some crazy back country rides up there.
Can You compare It to an Ext era v.2?
Hello, How much sag do you use ??? And how many tokens?
I have the same fork with the Charger 3 on both my Megatower and Turbo Levo. It’s so dialed in my Levo, but just doesn’t feel right on the Megatower. Wondered if it’s the extra eBike weight? I’m huge at 100 lbs more riding weight than you. I’m sold on the upgrade and just subscribed 👍
Encouraging to hear the new damper is a good upgrade! Few days ago I sold my 2 year old charger3 zeb for 450€ and ordered a new 3.1 Zeb for 699€. I weighted if I would just do the damper internals upgrade for 80€ or get a new unit. In the end I splurged over to a new one to get also the better bushing tolerance. Price difference would have been minimal since I would have needed to purchase at least the vice jaws and crows foot to do the the damper service myself. Also I think I will prefer the screw-type relief valves, the push-in buttons always squirt some oil to the fingertip / glove.
@@Maeili I found a world of difference with the new damper, and I hope it improves your ride. 👍
To get my zeb 180 3.1 to feel gooe-bike. The rough I have to run 60-65 psi. That's about 20 psi less than what they recommend for me. I'm 220 on an ebike. I also added 2 tokens. Surprisingly it's still supportive and doesn't sit into the travel. Idk maybe my shock pump is broken. It feels really good though , better than my old 2.1 lyrik.
I found some drops and steeper stuff and the pressure was too low for me. Bumped up to 80psi (about 10psi less than recommended) and 4 tokens. Open on hi and low comp. Actually feels so good now. Rides higher and still feels good over rough stuff.
ended up around 115-120 psi 0 tokens open on hsc and lsc.
Nice job! I have a new 2025 Pike Ultimate 3.1 that is the best fork I have ever ridden... I hated, and I do mean hated my 2022 Pike Ultimate Charger 3. I'm currently at 3psi over recommended pressure with rebound at recommended and HSC -1 and LSC -1. I was surprised a bit that you didn't try +1/-1 HSC on your bracketing as I found a pretty big difference on my Pike. Quick question, are head on collisions a big problem on your trails with pedal assist riders climbing up?
@@ThunderStruckMTB Thanks for the compliment. In regards to HSC, when the Rockshox forks used a bladder instead of IFP, high and low speed would overlap a little bit, and I definitely had to do bracketing for HSC. Now that they are independent, I could tell right away from just jumping up and down on the bike in my driveway where the proper setting was going to be. This fork is feeling so great, but now it makes me want to get rid of the Pike on my Tallboy, and get the new new Pike for it.
2:52 bunny!!!
Can i have ur old forks pwees?
Ouch!
Great video. I would’ve enjoyed it more without the music. Some videos are better without it. Still thumbs up 👍🏽 ride safe!
Hi. this vídeo works for stamp 3? Regards
No, this video is for the Stamp 7 and 11. The Stamp 2 and 3 use different internals, so this would not work.
@@dansrockgarden8921 do you know Where can I find it?
Why do you choose to ride T&A instead of the better offshoot?
@@nickv3085 They’re both fun, I just like T&A better. To me, the other trail is more about steep chutes, and there are lots of those types of trails in Laguna/Aliso. T&A is a bit more rough and rugged, and that’s what I was in the mood to ride.
Which trail is trail 4?
@@nonstopfootball4164 I can never remember the name (it’s not on maps). Tree on Fire, or something.
Easy to follow, thanks for the video
Glad it helped
How do you get to this trail? Is it close to 5 oaks?
@@UwUBrawlStars It’s in the other side of the park; just past Meadows. They recently changes the name of this trail to Sheep’s Run.
@@dansrockgarden8921 oh thanks so much, I plan to ride this one soon. Also is it legal and labeled on the laguna map?
@@UwUBrawlStars yes, on the map and totally legal to ride. Have fun 🤙🏼
That roll and rock gold lube was done in a resent scientific test on wear and came out to be one of the worse for gouding through a steel bar! Muc off won by a mile with the hair line wear on the same test it was put through a test of the 10 best lubes gold was the 10th and ment to be the best! I stopped using it and switched to muc off
Thank you for not sharing names 🤙
Is this in the san fernando valley?
No, down in Orange County. In Aliso and Laguna.
Finishing up shredding luge, love it! Looks like I missed a good one.
Yup, but as you know, there will be more epic rides.
I chased some clicking noises my bike was making for months. I tried everything- changed pedals, replaced bottom bracket, checked stem bolts, crank arm to BB joint, etc. Finally found and fixed the problem- all I had to do was put some grease on the seat post! Arrrgh!
Awesome video and ride Dan! Do you have this route saved or on Strava you can share? I'd love to do this myself . Thanks for the good vibes🤘
Ask and ye shall receive: strava.app.link/aWthmfr7zGb
Super cool route there, Dan!
Yeah, we all need to get together and ride up there sometime.
Crazy, after all that climbing you did, you just had to go back up for more! LOL! For the truly EPIC descent, isn't it better to hit El Prieto after Sunset instead of the other trail you did? Not sure of the name of that one. Merril to Sunset to El P is one of the best rides in all of SoCal!
Thanks! Yup, Sunset to EP is our normal route, but my buddy had to get back to the car and I used that as an opportunity to grab more water.
BEASTMODE!!! Another Rad video man!
Thanks Derek! 👍👍
Bike is sick
Dude that's just crazy! And the climbs on Blackstar & Luge are no joke either. You're a beast!
Thanks! I’ll keep doing these super long rides for as long as my legs will allow 🤣
truly sick and ambitious! I may have been able to do something similar back when I was in my 30s or heck, even early 40s, but now at 54...fuhgeddabouttit!!! Stats at the end were cool, all that vert is just bananas, but what was the total riding time?
C'mon @turntabilist, 54?! You're still young!
@@MTBr-of-SoCal hahah! Well, thanks for sayin that and at least I'm trying my damnedest to NOT get an E-bike, lol!
Moving time was about 5.5hrs, so I think total was around 6.5-7hr.
Epic hit out well done
Level up bro!! You're a monster!
C'mon, Dan! The corners are there for a reason! (cactus trail) ;)
You are 100% right. That trail confuses me. In the past some inside lines looked like they were left by trail crews while others were clearly made by corner cutters and blocked by crews. Now everything is all one big trail. It might be time to install wood fences like they did in Meadows (Aliso).
Just busting your balls. I thought that ride concept was super rad. I'd love to see you knock out Aliso too in it one of these days!@@dansrockgarden8921
Holy smokes 💪🏼 very impressive.
Thanks Maxwell!
My stamp 7 started making noises after only 2 months. For me, this is not acceptable. That’s why I have returned them. Hat jemand Erfahrung mit den Hope F22?
Muc off! Hell yeah
Just rebuilt mine because the rear axle shaft broke. It was made of aluminum. The replacement part is chromoly.

Why you cut it?
It’s normal to cut the steer tube. If you have too much protruding, it can cause problems later, such as smacking your face/head on it.
