This is my own design, a picture diary of the basic construction of a truly Portable Power work Station. If you are out in the Boonies and need power to build then this is it! I built this on a dolly so that it is easy for one person to move. Remember to add a lager steel plate to the bottom of the dolly as the standard ones come with a very small plate. To do this just lay your new larger plat...

Don't hammer on the back of an ax with anything. As the ax head starts to mushroom out shards of steel can split off travelling at the speed of sound. I logger I worked with lost an eye that way using your white cane method! If you are going to beat on anything to split wood use a wood splitting wedge. Make sure you grind off any mushroomed steel as it appears. And wear eye protection even then. You could have busted that round open using a wood-splitting maul. Right, always attack a round along the outer edge. And to make it easier rub the splitting maul down with a wax candle for much better penetration.

This works better with straight grained woods but in my area I get a lot of cross grained mixed hardwoods( sometimes no longer green but when it’s free you take it all and make it happen). So,I use a hydraulic splitter and I put the splits directly into the loader bucket or a bin so I don’t have to pick splits off the ground. My shoulders are very grateful.

What I discovered by trial and error. Or just learning as you gain experience and knowledge. I had a slab of concrete 8 x 10. I would stand logs on both ends. Or where you can walk through the logs upright on the concrete. You can put some close to one another. As long as you can reach them with a dull maul. Or chisel edge. Split until you have to bend over to stand all the fallen ones upright again.. it can save energy time. And a time and back saver

This definitely works, but why not just use an actual splitting wedge? This is not good for the axe head.

Here is #1 tip for everyone! If it has bark on it, it’s still wet, not dry or seasoned. Yes it will burn but you will waste most of the btu’s it has drying the wood before it burns.I just cut wood that is actually dry. Splits easily then.

If you have proper tool to start with. A splitting maul. A regular axe has no profile for splitting. Nice straight grain piece also. Waste of time and how long before your arm gets sore from hitting so much. Bark is junk and creates so much ash. I burn it in back yard fire and even yet hate it as it makes a mountain of ash. Should wear safety glasses if your hitting metal on metal.

Hi Harry, how are you? It’s 11 years later but you can bet that your method is still learning by thousands of people out there and I’m one of them. Normally, one gets an ax and just wack the hack out of the big piece of wood as such in turn has spent lot of energy wasting in the process. I’ve found your way save a lot of energy and time if you don’t have time to do strenuous exercise by way of sacking these big wood. Thanks much! 👍🤩

As a retired carpenter I've hammered in countless nails ...... fifteen years ago half way through a roofing job, I had to abandon nails due to the constant wrist and finger shocks of hammering, I finished the job using screws and a cordless driver. Yesterday I received my all new Scheppach 7 ton log splitter .... At 72 years old I have to be careful with my hands and fingers as they can and do seize up. Motto: Take care in your youth about hammering, I didn't and it came back to haunt me .. :)

Great technique! I’ve used this method for years! The only difference in my method is I use a beetle made from a stout dogwood root and in place of the hammer. That way the poll of the ax used for splitting is not destroyed.

That is the way I split large sections of wood. However, you should wear eye protection. Metal chips from your tools could be dangerous.

Immaculate vibes all around. Stuntin on them to start the video, leaning down into the camera like you want to get eye level with me while I'm sitting in a high chair, chicken coworkers, classic have a good day. I could watch you tap away all day but I should probably stop procrastinating and do something with my life, like chopping some would. This video has aged like a fine wine. Have a good day.

Nice work, think I'll give it a try next time I'm splitting logs. Just one suggestion; two steel faces hitting one another would require some safety goggles I think. Those flying shards don't take any prisoners!

if i saw someone using this method i would go home and grab a couple of my axes with the right profile and go back and split the wood for them. u dont waste energy swinging the right axe with the right profile for the wood. oh and with the time saved they would be able to go play some rounds of golf and save the tap tap tap for tapping the ball in the hole. just tap it in tap tap tap.

Harry! I love you! We had our grand California Live Oak tree uprooted in a storm. We asked the tree service to mulch the canopy and leave the logs and rounds for the neighborhood. We gave away what people could haul off on their own. We were left with the huge rounds. My research found your video on how to split these rounds safely. Love your skills!
