Because of the pandemic, we missed the trip back home for Thanksgiving to see the family... So instead, we headed west to the Utah desert for a long weekend in the van. Thunder Mountain feels like riding though a national park! www.trailforks.com/trails/thunder-mountain/ #iRideDumb
Moonshine resurrected!
Переглядів 443 роки тому
I last rode this bike in Sedona, February of 2019. After that trip, I tore the bike down to rebuild it, and found a little hiccop... Shortly after I picked up the Ripmo, and my Moonshine was hanging in the garage, waiting for the time to finish the rebuild. I finished the rebuild last night, and took it out for a shakedown today on Bon Scott today. #iRideDumb #justrideone

CRASH on the Portal Trail!!! - Upper Portal with the "Old Guys"
Crooks!
hell yea!
Man fireman's was actually kind of buff back then! I forgot.
RIGHT! Way different now after the floods washed all the dirt away...
Thanks for posting this. We were out this way a couple of weeks ago. We watched Remi M do this and I thought that there’s NO WAY I’m doing this. But watching you “mere mortals” (absolutely no offense meant) tackle it, I think I’m going to give it a go next time out. Well shot. Well put together. Good job!
It is definitely a challenging and dangerous trail. With good bike handling skills, staying in control and choosing which obstacles to ride, and which to walk, it is definitely doable. A few things worth noting: - We have ridden this time, and usually ride it yearly... so we have a pretty good idea of the dangers - We ride all the obstacles, and we 'aint too afraid to walk when/where it makes sense - This is vid is just the upper portion of the trail, which has WAY more exposure, but is actually LESS technical than the lower section I have a few other videos of this top section, and the lower section from over the years. If you plan to ride this trail, I recommend watching as many as you can stomach before doing so, as help is a longer way away than it looks, and wrong moves can be deadly... But I think the biggest part of the trail that few people mention, is that it is before you ever see the Portal Trail. We start at the top of 313 and Gemini Bridges road. The entire ride is +20miles, depending on where you start, and The Portal is only the last few miles... It is a big day with a very challenging section at the end. This is our route for that day: connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/10961936011 Have Fun!
I avoid people with anger issues.
probably good... but you may miss the entertainment!
This is only Portal Easy Part. You're missing the money part.😄
There are not easy parts of The Portal... only sketchy parts, techie parts, loose parts and gnarly parts! 🤣
Why such enthusiastic anger?🤔
Years of practice!
Is there a part 2 of the good stuff?
Well... this first video only took me ~8 months to post... the lower portal video is "in the queue" 😉
the old fart was talking the talk, but cant walk the walk 😂😂😂
you obviously do not know this man! 😂
@@iRideDumb well he was talking smak as if he rides this trail as Nate Hills would.. But his ego got settled pretty quickly..
@@AlexeiPavlov "ride this trail as Nate Hills would" - few people ride this trail like that guy! Have you ridden this one? (also, the 'shit-talker' isn't the one who crashed)
@@iRideDumb yes I did, several times.. this trail is an ultimate ego checker, as seen in this video
@@AlexeiPavlov It's awesome!!! We hit it every year we go out... I have an updated 2023 version that I need to finish, with slightly less shit-talking :)
Awesome!
Thank you :)
Wow besides the top and little bit of cleanup down below, this still looks like crap.. I'm curious to how this looks now since so much work has been done to left hand trails... I've never done this one since its labeled double black and there's nothing but bad reviews of the trail but it doesn't look that steep, it just looks miserable with all that gravel... I might try it eventually but David Lee Roth is much more worth my exhaustion getting to the top 😋
I may have ridden this once since shooting the video, but I don't know of too many people going down this trail anymore... it was much better before the floods, and on a moto :) DLR is definitely MUCH more worth the time/effort it takes to get up there... and it was intentionally build for MTB's... and one day we'll fix that uphill section in the middle. Was the guitar still up when you hit DLR?
You didn't say any thoughts on the bike!!! :((
it's been a few years, but what would ya like to know?
@@iRideDumb hi, just some general ride thoughts like pedaling, climbing, descending. How the suspension felt? Thanks for responding. Take care.
@@Windband1 I touched on some of this throughout the vid... Climbing, the bike felt a bit big and heavy-ish. Its something I could pedal all day, but would feel it the next day. Descending, it was a surface-to-surface missile!!! I could point and go through some of the gnarliest features where I tested it. Suspension as a platform, was SUPER confidence inspiring! I rode it with RS coil, and loved it! One more note here, when descending, I felt I had to push/hop it the bike up to change directions in the high speed gnar... Again, it was a super solid straight line platform at that size and setup for ME specifically. I ended up purchasing an Ibis Ripmo V1, and not this Smash. To boil that decision down, I just felt more comfortable controlling the Ripmo in the types of trails I usually ride. Had I been more of a DH/Park rider, I would have chosen the Smash… and honestly, had I chosen the Smash back in 2019, I'm sure I would have been super happy with it, and learned to ride it more in my style. Does this help?
@@iRideDumb Thank you for getting back to me. That is helpful. Cheers.
@@Windband1 Happy to help... go demo one, it's a blast!!!
Great ride. Can you shuttle this ?
Yes, you definitely can (and should, pedaling up the road kinda sucks!)!
Slow down! You're riding *very* fast and recklessly. Your mother would cry if she saw this video. Just sayin'
I totally showed my mom this video!
Shoulda sent it :/
I wanted to... it still scares me a little...
What tire casing would you recommend for this bike?
Depends where you're riding... Riding mostly in ColoRADo and Utah, I usually run EXO or EXO+, depending on the tire/combo.
Dayum!
#DoesDarleneKnow? - just saying...
you leave my mother out of this!
Um...... Okaaaay.... not quite sure why the algorithm flagged this one up?!
my hacking your UA-cams has worked!
Hell yeah!
Awesome Sr.
Nice vídeo man.💪
Thank you! I need to grab one of these again and see how it feels... hmmm
4:15 A crash that promoted rider to walk a few times thereafter (i.e. shit gets real). 4:50 rider exhibits wisdom. 5:25 riding past the death memorializing sign (i.e. wisdom lost, senility set in?) 🤣
Senility (stubbornness) was well established on many prior trips down The Portal 🤣
@@iRideDumb don't schedule this route with him again without life and rescue insurance🤣
@@biketothetop take life insurance on him and go for another ride..
Did you buy ? Still have ?
I did not, I ended up with a size Large V1 Ripmo. The SMASH in S3 just felt a little too big for me at the time... That said, I'd LOVE to take one out again and compare it what I've been on for the last 2 years.
@@iRideDumb It’s an intriguing ride and I like their story I also like the Ripmo too actually.
@@shamrock4840 Yes, I REALLY like those guys! I'm local-ish, so I was able to check out their old facility and talk them a bit when I picked up the demo. For me, the Ripmo was a bit more nimble for how I rode at the time, and I do think the front end of the GG was setup a little too tall for me... If I had the bike longer and spent more time playing with it, I'm sure I could have tweaked it more to my style. Bikes are soooo much fun!

hell YES!!! You should join for the weekend before Christmas trip... we get the trail to ourselves!
Trail gnomes made a nice new line 👍
Only recently I've come across current GG videos. Their grassroots marketing really sucks. I watched this video to get some kind of review. How does it feel, sound with that Revved frame?
Even when I'm "not watching UA-cam"....I'll watch an Ahab video any day! 🤘🏼😂🤘🏼 And paint me impressed! You cleaned that tech easily! I like to say with captain Ahab that you climb the whole way down 🤷🏼♂️😂
