Lang & Ackroyd
Приєднався 3 тра 2009
We launched this channel at the start of COVID to provide music videos to the residents of Seniors' and Long Term Care Homes while we were unable to perform in person due to restrictions. Most of the videos were recorded simply on our phones, while some of the more recent involved minimally more production.
More recently, we began to post videos about my (Jim Lang) family history as part of a series called "Bohemian Sodbusters," based on my book, "Felizienthal: Conversations with My Ancesstors." (Search: Jim Lang, Felizienthal, Amazon) .

Bohemian Sodbusters Episode Eight: Sodbusters Welcome the Grand Trunk Railroad
The eighth episode in the series, "Bohemian Sodbusters," which chronicles the story of my Bohemian-German ancestors’ 200-year trek across continents and oceans to become homesteaders in the Canadian West at the turn of the 20th century. In this episode, the Grand Trunk Railroad arrives, the villages of Raymore and Quinton are established, and the homesteaders expand their acreages, build wooden houses and barns, and grow their families.

Bohemian Sodbusters Episode Six: Traditional Cuisine
Переглядів 5269 місяців тому
In this episode of Bohemian Sodbusters, I explore some of the key dishes of our ancestors and show how they're being made and enjoyed by their descendant. Please note: There are many many other types of food in our culinary history. This video deals with just a few, and in all cases, I'm sure many of you have different recipes or names for all of them. I tried to strike a middle ground with the...
Bohemian Sodbusters Part Five: Winnipeg
Переглядів 19610 місяців тому
In this series I track my family's migrations from Bavaria in 1670 to Galicia in 1835, to Bukovina in 1900 to Western Canada in 1903. Although I focus on my ancestors, their stories are very much the stories of thousands of East Europeans who immigrated to Canada between 1900 and 1910. In this episode, I focus on Winnipeg at the turn of the 10th century, and how my ancestors met the challenges ...
Karl Lang, Killed in Action, May 23, 1944
Переглядів 68711 місяців тому
Karl Lang was my father's younger brother, the son of Max and Theresia Lang of Raymore, Saskatchewan. Karl Lang and Rudy Deutsch were neighbours and Rudy claimed he was a distant cousin. In WWII, Rudy served as a stretcher-bearer with Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry I(PPCLI), while Karl was in the infantry with the Loyal Edmontonians. Both men survived the battle of Ortona, Italy, b...

In this revised episode of the continuing story of my ancestors' migrations through Europe and eventually, to western Canada, I focus on the interwoven relationships that began in Bukovina, around 1900-1905.

Part Two: We arrive in Ukraine in 2003, hire a car and driver to take us from Kiev to L'viv. There, we explore the city, meet our guide, and begin the drive to where Felizienthal ought to be.
In Search of Felizienthal: Part One
Переглядів 156Рік тому
In 2003, Jim Lang and his wife, Mary, visited the L'Viv area in West Ukraine, where they hoped to find Jim's family's ancestral village of Felizienthal. Family stories agreed that the village was likely destroyed in one or both of the world wars; but they could not know for sure, since no news emerged from that area during the time it was controlled by the Soviet Union. In Part One, Jim introdu...
In Search of Felizienthal: Part Three
Переглядів 179Рік тому
In Part Three, we arrive in Felizienthal surprised and delighted that it was still there. As was St. John Nepomuk Church, not only standing tall after 140 years, but sporting a fresh coat of yellow paint, thanks to some Felizienthal descendants who had arrived ten years earlier. We meet the Dankevich family, shortly after we left, tragically suffered the loss of their son, father and husband, o...
Bohemian Sodbusters, Episode Three

The continuing story of my Saskatchewan Lang ancestors, as well as the ancestors of relatives and neighbours in their 19th and early 20th century migrations through Europe to end up homesteading on the Canadian prairies. This episode focuses on life in the "language islands" of western Galicia (today, southwest Ukraine), in the villages of Felizienthal, Annaberg and Karlsdorf, among others.

Bohemian Sodbusters Part One: Bohemians

This is the first of a planned documentary series based on Jim Lang's book, Felizienthal: Conversations with my ancestors. In Part One, I put my ancestry in the context of its times, where being an Austrian did not always mean one lived in Austria, as such.
Remembering Dave Lewis
Переглядів 143Рік тому
Jim and Mary (Ackroyd) Lang remember their good friend and bandmate, Dave Lewis, who left us on January 31, 2023. Dave played bass and sang backup and some lead vocals in our bands during the early to mid-eighties. He toured Western Canada and Europe with us, and remained a friend to the day he passed. In recent years, we videotaped our living room jam sessions, two of which are included in the...

Three Songs for the Movie "Happy FKN Sunshine," written by Jim Lang; performed by various iterations of the Lang & Ackroyd Band: The What's Your Sign Line; Play me Take the Ribbons; and I'm Always Right (and I never lie). NOTE: These were all written tongue in cheek. The title for the last song was borrowed from an old Firesign Theatre sketch. Just sayin.'

beautiful cover!
How can I see the first seven episodes?
Very nicely done! Informative, entertaining and compelling!
Fantastic historical work Jim, Mom & Dad thoroughly enjoy all of your videos as well.
Glad to hear it
3:43min: The man in the middle sitting on a deer is my grandfather Ferdinand Geisbauer. On the right side of the picture is his brother Ludwig Geisbauer. Both lived in Annaberg and Felizienthal and they died in Germany. The big deer is still famous in our family. Thanks a lot for this amazing video! My father still knows many of these dishes. Best regards from Germany, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
Thank you so much for this! It's great to put names to these ancestors!
Among many of the many dishes featured, of which my Grandmother Degelman, nee Schimidt, commonly made, Zwetschge (plum) piroggen were a common summer treat. Many tasty recipes made with the selection of fruit trees on her property. Home made blood sausage, headcheese are among my favourites, made by her together with my Great Aunt. Dotsch!! lol Our seemingly unique family word!
Hi, indeed, the interesting spellings are part of the mystery. A few people have said they called their plum dumplings, plum perogies, which they are--just a different shape. Thanks for the comments and for subscribing.
Jim, yes my Grandmother made plum dumplings, which she called Zwetschge Knödel as well, drenched in melted butter. I preferred the perogies. (This video sure stirred the taste buds, great food, great memories!) @@dotsch62
Thank you for the story. I keep looking for stories from this day. My great uncle Lawrence Peters was killed that day during the battle at the hitler line. Also born in Saskatchewan and part of the PPCLI. He too rests at Cassino. RIP to all.
You are most welcome. I hope to have the full interview with Rudy Deutsh online before too long. He tells the story very well--more details than I could share in the video. The CBC archives has a great radio broadcast by Matthew Halton, recorded during the battle. Karl ended up in the Loyal Edmontonians likely because he signed up in Vancouver, but I don't know the connection. I tell this whole story, including Ortona, in my book, Felizienthal, which is available in electronic form on Amazon, as part of the chapter, "Casualties of War." I think Canadians need to know more about both battles and of the overall role these men played in the war. RIP to all, indeed.
RIP Karl Lang RIP Rudy Deutsch
Lest we forget
Indeed. Especially, these days.
Jim these are amazing!! I love family histories and better yet when it’s my family!! Thank you for the effort put in and for sharing with your family ❤
Very welcome
You sing so well❤
I had hoped at least the Church would have lasted forever! 💔
Me, too. It was quite a shock. The fire was likely started in an electrical fusebox in the church. It burned extremely fast.
So sad to have survived through wars & the years to end this way!@@dotsch62
Thanks for sharing!
Lovely tribute to a lovely man.
Absolute gold! Great content to share and very well done.
Thanks, Perry.
A great tribute to the memory of Steve Goodman!
Thanks, Peter. That means a lot to me.
Amazing.Thanks a lot.
Emily, with a flower in her hair, like young Grandma.
Wonderful.
Wonderful, great job!
Note that in the original edit of this video, I included a plea for money to restore the cemetery. Money was raised, but poorly spent, as little was done to improve the site--some suggest it was made worse. I re-edited this video recently, to remove the outdated content. In the process, the quality of the video was degraded considerably. In time, I may be able to return to the original footage for higher quality video.
Such a nice cover. Thanks!! ^__^
Jim and Mary you have make my day! Such a wonderful retrospective of your musical journey together! Made me smile.
How lovely to read this, Ray. Very much looking forward to some tunes with you--soon! :)
What a beautiful tribute to your lives and your music. I am so grateful to have been a small part of it.
You were part of one of the best bits... and that was also because of you, Jim.
❤
Emily is a star! Clearly has music in her DNA! Well done!
Lovely
I'm confessing i love this song! Beautiful job Mary and Jim
Thanks, Ray. Means a lot, coming from you. (Tip o’ the hat)
Fun! Nice work, Jim!
Very nice. Love the violin too. Always loved that song. I like to find other older musicians in my age bracket still rockin it ! I attempted to do the song also as an older female musician if you'd care to take a listen on my picture/channel, which also has songs from our age era LOL! A thumbs up an subscribe from me Cheers !

Hola, nos dio mucho gusto a Jacobo y a mi, Lucero, estamos cocinando en Ciudad de México, esperemos verlos pronto, y escucharlos en vivo
Muchas gracias! ¡Fue un placer conocerte en Campeche!
Love, love , love these two!
That's a good key for your voice, nice to hear you sing in a lower range.
Great tune... nicely done!! Jim, like how you looped the chords over verse to open up the solo. Love the fiddle Mary! I know this tune from the cover by Chet Atkins / Mark Knopfler on Neck & Neck. :)
