Curly hair is very forgiving with mistakes. Straight or slightly wavy is not. My husband has been cutting my hair for me for years, and his method is definitely more detailed. He capes me, combs out my elbow length hair, sections it just behind my ear on each side, and then he pins it up, leaving the very bottom layer down. He trims that layer to remove splits/damaged ends, and then he uses the sectioning comb to separate out 1/2” increments to let down and trim each layer. He does it in this manner so his sharp hair shears cut a clean line versus pushing the hair before it cuts. My best friend stopped by when hubby was trimming my hair and complimented his work, but asked if it wouldn’t be easier to just gather my hair in a ponytail and cut through the full thickness all at once. He explained that would leave my hair uneven. My friend has fine, straight hair, hubby explained it would definitely not be a good way to cut her hair. So she asked, does that mean you can cut mine too? He said sure, you are next. And when he swept up the clippings and uncaped me, she took a seat on the stool and said just a trim. He held up his hand and asked her how many fingers worth, she said the index and middle fingers worth. He did her hair the same as mine. She was happy with the results and offered to pay him. He refused and she said she wanted him to continue to give her haircuts, and he said he would and she wouldn’t have to pay him, he wouldn’t take money from a friend. So I know I have it pretty good when my best friend trusts him to give her haircuts.
