I will be taking a sabbatical to attempt a thru hike of the Appalachian Trail (AT) starting March of 2024. I plan to be hiking for 6-7 months, while also raising funds for CURE International which is dear to my heart.

Jodi, thanks for all the videos and answering questions. I really enjoyed following your journey. What an accomplishment. It's wonderful to hear your positive words. Wow!
Thanks Gail!!
You are amazing. I will miss watching your videos. For me it was connecting with my oldest friend. I’m so proud of you!
Aw…. Thanks Lisa! Glad you watched the videos! Would love to see you and catch up! 😘
Great advice… Hike your own hike……don’t compare
Thank you so much for answering the questions. Your joy truly was so inspiring as I followed along your hike. I loved seeing Mica getting lots of love at the beginning of your video. 😉 May God continue to bless you Sparrow. 🙏
Thank you so much!
What a pleasure it’s been for us to follow you on your trek.
Thank you! It’s been an incredible journey!
❤
Thank you for all this info, Jodi. It has been such a joy to follow your journey and pray for you both as you have traveled the AT. ♥️
Thank you Marcia!!
Jodi, a warm welcome home! You and Mica look so happy! Enjoyed the questions. Your responses gave interesting factual information, wove great little stories and offered up some trail lingo - "through trail", "flip flops", etc. Only thing missing - sitting around a campfire!!! Your interviewing of backpackers and preparation research paid off. Bravo!!!! Betty P, Gloucester
Aw thanks Betty!! It’s a whole new language for sure! Yes, nice to be home!
Sparrow, I remember your longest day! This will be far more than you want to know and remember, but here it is: We caught the shuttle out of Stanimals/Waynesboro. Strider and I exited at Rockfish Gap, heading north into Shenandoah National Park with full packs. We stayed together, talking for about two miles or so. I stopped to tie a shoe and never saw him again. You got dropped off (at Blackrock Gap parking area?) and slackpacked south. We bumped into each other at Sawmill Overlook. I think you had just had a snack or lunch, and I was about to do the same. You alerted me that there was no water ahead. That was terribly bad news, because I was nearly out and didn't want to make a dry camp. I ended up calling Stanimals at Turk Gap and spent another night (vortex!) in Waynesboro. You came in a bit later after finishing your 22-mile slack. The following morning, we caught the same shuttle back into Shenandoah. I got out at Turk Gap. You and Metro continued to Blackrock Gap. I didn't think I'd catch up to any of you again, but I found you at Hightop about two days later, just as I was finishing my section hike for the year. You were meeting a friend at Swift Run Gap. I returned home about May 27. You walked to Katahdin. The two are so different that there's no measure of equivalence. Best wishes, Paper Map.
Wow!! Paper Map! Your memory is incredible! So good to reminisce about those details. I’m so happy we ran into each other again before it was time for you to end your section. Meeting people like you made my Thru so much more special and fun. Many blessings to you!
Thank you for the q&a. Learned a lot. I so enjoyed your postings along the way. I look forward this winter to watching them again. Amazing feat.. Amazing cause… Amazing person! 🎉❤🙏
Thanks for doing this. Very interesting.
Mica got his post hike groom!
Thanks for answering our questions. I enjoyed every video and loved following you and Mica and learned so much from you. Mica is a sweetheart...such a good boy. I am so proud of you both Jodi! It was my privilege to pray for you and Mica. Your experiences when I saw our Lord God provide and protect lifted my spirit. I think of the time you gave the older man water and then you came upon the big blue jug of water made me think of the bible verse...even when you give a cup of cold water in Jesus's name you have done His service. You and Mica brought me joy, laughter, awe in the beautiful scenes and animals like the wild ponies and I even cried at times especially when you showed us Katahdin that early am. Your hard earned reward was in reach. Oh I hope you write a children's book or go speak in a school. Children will adore you and sweet Mica. Love, Kath😊❤
Aw…. Thanks Kathy… part 3 coming soon! 😊
Thank you❤
You're welcome 😊
Thank you for answering. 😊 I'm glad you had a great experience on the AT.
Your positive attitude was so apparent every time I saw you!
So glad Mica didn't have any problem hiking. He was a joy to watch. 😊
Aren't dogs not allowed on Mt Katahdin?
Jodi, your hike is awesome, an inspiration to us all. But my husband, Eric, and I wonder whether you were ever concerned about being a woman hiking the AT alone with her dog. On days when it was just you and Micah, were you ever uneasy?
How many people did you see flip flop on the trail? Or did you see hikers completing their trail from last year?
This is a great idea. Thanks for answering questions. I like all the questions so far and I a wait the answers. One I haven't seen is how about bugs? I heard mosquitos in the videos once in a while but you never mentioned it too much. Did you encounter coyotes and skunks ? Did Mica ever wander off from the shelter at night? I am glad you have time to decompress back home. I am so impressed, you have completed an amazing journey.
Thanks Gail! Great questions too! Will answer all of them… I promise 😊
How did rage & smackdad get those trail names? What state are they from? What date & where did you meet them on the AT? What were your best times on trail & what were your most problematic? Was everything what you expected on the AT? What was & what wasn’t?
Hi Jodi, Looking back at this incredible challenge, what do you see with new eyes?
What stretches did you do on trail to avoid injury? What was the most common injury you saw on trail? What was your longest mileage day and where was it? So many questions….
Jodi, you’re a champ, and Mica deserves that lounge chair! I’m interested in what surprised you most about the long hike, since you were so obviously well prepared.
Congratulations Jodi and Mica! I am so proud of you - not just for this amazing life-changing accomplishment, but that you changed your life to say "yes" to following your dream. You did it, with lots of support. I had tears of joy for you! Al and I loved being with you every day on your journey. I will miss your adventures, but your experience will live on as inspiration for others forever.
How perfect that as you are just about finishing the hike and reaching Mt. Katahdin you spend the night with it in view, and enveloped with such beauty, stillness and peace. A powerful inner peace as your journey is soon to come to an end.
Fun entertainment for the dinner hour! You got this!
What is your go-to-food now that you are on home turf? Hopefully not trail magic, packaged Thai food, tuna, peanut butter….
If you do not feel that you will write a children’s book about your hike with MIca on the AT, hopefully a local author will step up to the plate!!!!! That would be so 🤩
Are you having issues being acclimated to being home? And is Mica missing his 10+ mile daily walks?
I am sure being back is joyful. However, how is the adjustment to being back to schedules, people, and other items...any negatives? I remember after doing long hikes, my first pleasures were a shower and a bed. However within a week, I was craving to be back in the woods. Also what happened to Pack Flip? Any updates on her. She was a big part of your hike. I used to hike with my dog, but we were attacked by another dog on the trail, and now my dog is leash aggressive so I really can't take him even when the trails require leashes because we were on such a trail, when we were attacked by an unleashed dog. Did you have any issues with aggressive dogs either on the AT or elsewhere through your hiking years. Also interested in were you ever fearful, etcetera. And if you ever had issues before the AT on the trail.
So good to see you and Mica doing well. 😊 You were so joyful on your hike. Did you have private hard moments? How long had you been thinking of hiking the AT? It was good to see Rage and SmackDad too. 😊 Was it easier hiking with someone or alone? What state are they in and will you see them again? Oh, also, did you lose weight and was it hard to eat enough? I'm sure you are happy to be home. 😊
Which brand of backpack and tent did you use on trail?
Will you do another long hike? Would you take Mica or any other dog? Thank you for the videos
How are you acclimating to being home?
You probably answered this already but I missed it. 1. What type of dog is Mica and how old is he? 2. Did Mica have any training outside of what your family has provided? He seems so calm and obedient. Wonderful job and thank you for posting your journey. We got to “travel”the AT through your efforts. Much appreciated.
A couple of questions: (1) There was a day when pets weren't allowed in Baxter State Park; has that changed or did you find a work-around? (2) Any post-hike blues? It's a pretty universal phenomenon. Heck, when I finish my week-long sections, it takes me a few days to get back into the swing of things, so I figure it must be a good deal harder for thru hikers. (3) Any idea if Strider finished (he fell and hit his head in the Shennies, I think, but continued on from there. (4) Did you ever think you might not make it? (5) My impression of you and Mica is that you were "dialed-in" and a lock to finish. Thanks for everything! Paper Map aka Corporal Kangaroo.
What was the hardest part for Mica? Also, some trails have no dogs allowed, did you experience any of those issues? We hike with our poodle but we have to find trails dog friendly.
Congratulations! You are a true inspiration!
Thank you so much!
Congratulations on completing your epic journey Sparrow... ✌🏻👽
Thank you! 😁
Congratulations Jodi and Mica! Thank you for journaling your AT journey. I've been following you from start to finish. Your inspiration, positivity, love of hiking and care of others is beyond remarkable. I learned a lot. It was so nice to see you and your family after church service today celebrating your accomplishments. God Bless. 🙏❤ -Glen
Thanks Glen!! I’ve enjoyed your comments throughout the hike and so glad you are hiking and enjoying the outdoors as well! Your gifts to both me and mica after church was so generous! Mica is currently resting with his new pumpkin toy at his side and he loves the liver treats as well! As for me, the “foot spa” products will definitely come in handy and I can’t wait to use them…. Much needed for my tootsies!! Thanks again for supporting me in my journey with your comments, thoughts and prayers! I’m so grateful for people like you!!😊
Congratulations, Jodi (and Mica). It is a monumental achievement. We were so glad to meet you both. Bill and Lesleigh.
Thank you Bill and Lesleigh! You were so kind to me! So nice to meet you both and see your beautiful home and to learn the history of “Bill’s view”. Hope our paths meet again!
