Awesome review of our Hud-Son Forest Equipment log debarker. We appreciate your feedback and your business!
I use the trunk lid off an old volkswagen - also good for hauling big stones, gravel, mixing cement in. Doesn't have to be Volkswagen - just need an upcurve in the front - punch a hole through for the chain. Been using mine for 30+ years and it is still going strong. Btw that is a dangerous tree to whack on. If a junk of dead top comes off you can't get out of the way quick enough. I like a falling bar and favor one side of the back cut to make the tree spin to one side to roll off the other tree.
I’ve owned one identical to yours for a couple decades, used with a portable gas capstan winch, purchased from Nova Jack, a Canadian company that last time I checked was still in business.
@@michaelmckeag960 Interesting. Is it plastic? How did it hold up over time?
@ It is yellow plastic, has held just fine, just scratches from use.
Kool you use it as a wood chipper also.
@@petergarcia8225 Ha ha, yeah. It makes a lot of chips!
Hope you are well! Nice video
Who sells that cone ?
I picked it up at a local hardware store. You might find it online at a place that sells forestry stuff.
needs a ring/valve job...blowing a lotta smoke
You don't know you are alive until you get poop and poison oak on your bare feet. Nice walk in nature, cant get any more connected to the land. 🙂
Ha ha! Thanks :)
I’m going to buy one and just bring it home, maybe I’ll sell my boat and or snowmobile, last time she said she would divorce me. Is it worth it?
Dear SGTDuckButter, That is a valid concern. Selling an item before acquiring another might be a good way to soften the shock of another toy, and if we are being honest with ourselves, are we really going to use that old boat in the back 40 covered with dust and weeds? I suggest you secretly sell your boat/snowmobile and put the newly acquired bulldozer back in the newly vacant spot. With any luck, she won't even notice! If she asks what happened to the boat/snowmobile, just tell her "what boat/snowmobile? The bulldozer has always been there." Good luck
Just gave a friend of mine a 1957 JD 420 crawler ,and i know he will enjoy it after getting it back in running condition
They are incredible machines! and fun too
Great felling skills. I wouldn't beat wedges into a tree that punky. I would go more into the lean and figure it out from there safely.
Thanks! My plan is to always look up, always have a couple escape routes, and be ready to run fast!!!
@@gotwoodinhead6814 readiness is good, a plan is better and both is best.
059 smart. Have you looked into belt drive units?
Obscenely overpriced. Use a plastic barrel wrapped into a cone or a grain shovel.
@@JoeSmith-vs5sy That works too and is cheaper!
Very interesting thanks. Excellent edit with the different angles.
Thanks
That point cam is bone dry put some grease on it
I have this but my chain keeps coming loose and then my debarker hops not sure what more to do to try and fix this anyone have suggestions?
Tighten the chain?
Also, it comes with 2 different sprockets. Maybe try the other one?..
Very nice, cool property too
Thanks!
That’s going to be one dirty log
Yup. I clean my logs before milling. That or peel the bark if its loose.
Great video!! I’m restoring a 420 with a holt blade just like yours but it is the angle blade. I was wondering if you could get some measurements and some close up pics of the cylinders for the blade. Ours are missing and I’d like to find something similar. Thanks.
Well that's it, I'm getting one.
I was gonna say...to hell with grommets! You can find something around.
Not sure where I saw one but it was made out of steel plate. It was built like a scoop and a chain through the front, would skid real easy in the winter time. And would save the skid trail from that rutt that always appears.
Sounds like it works. I've heard of people using a car hood too. I like a cone of some kind- I don't like my trails getting all torn up.
Use a business card to clean the grit off the points after filing them. Firm paper is needed.
Didn't know about that. Will Do! Thanks
Your battery is weak or you need 2 new battery cables. Remember it is positive ground.
Yeah, usually I keep it on a trickle charger. it has new cables- it's just been sitting a while. I think some of the connections were corroded as well.
Thanks for the tips. Seems like most of my milling is in the dark. I'm working during the daylight. Cut when ya got the time.
Good information. Food for thought to make your milling life easier; the Woodland Mills log rests/ back stops are very poorly thought out. As you know, they can bite into, and stop, a log you're trying to rotate. Others have mounted ball bearings to the top to reduce the biting. Others have gone an even cheaper route by slipping a length of PVC pipe over the stops when it's time to rotate. Gotta give you credit for milling in the dark. Dave
I'm looking at buying one. Looks perfect! I just googled this and Tractordata said 3000ft/minute, and then found your video. Not quite accurate! How it it for pushing over 2-6" pine trees? Can the rear pro run a bush hog? Thanks for the video!
It has a lot of push. 2 inch is fine, 6 inch maybe. Don't push at the base. Push as high as you can for leverage. Mine doesn' t have a pto unfortunately so I don't know about pto driven equipment. I think you'd be better off with a tractor for a brush hog. You'd have to find one with a 3-point hitch and they didn't all have that as it was optional. It will pull pretty much anything. It is amazingly powerful for such a small machine. I have found that a small tractor with a box blade can do more than the bulldozer as far as grading dry hard dirt. The blade won't dig in hard pack. you need rippers to tear it up first. Overall, I love my 420 but it does have limitations. It's not a big bulldozer so you can't expect it to do what a large one will. Still they are fun, powerful and can do a lot of work. On the other hand, parts are getting harder to find. They are antiques :) Good luck and thanks. I'd love to hear how it works out for you.
There's one out there that mounts without the bar, you have to remove the bar, no big deal, and it's much shorter, easier to use and no chain that could be dangerous even if you grind down the chain. It's belt driven. I like this because when a jam happens the belt slips. It also looks like you could drive other homemade gadgets to the belt pulley. It comes with accessories for Stihl & Husqvarna, clutch housing, bolts, washers, extra double sided blades, etc... It worked just as well. I'm going to install two adjustable feet at the bottom, like the ones on snowblower for gravel driveways, to adjust the depth for thick & thin bark. Either one makes the job much easier.
Interesting! What brand is yours? You can use whatever length bar and chain on the Hudson. I like the it a bit longer so you don't have to bend over- you can just stand in a comfortable position.
Thank you. Great review vids!
See how all the bark flies back at the operator? I have a different brand and it does the same thing. They don't work as smooth as seen here, neither.
It does make a mess. Especially if there's a lot of pitch in the wood. It gets all over your legs. It takes a bit of practice to use it smoothly. It will remove a lot of wood fast if you're not careful! Does yours operate the same as the Hudson?
hhhghgg
Pressing new primers into shot gun shells
I can see that now! Interesting
Where can I get one?
I got mine at a local hardware store but they are available online too.
That is not the drain plug. It holds the detent ball for the PTO lever. The drain is a pipe plug like the fill plug.
Well tarnation! That would explain why I didn't get much oil out.
3 indispensable books for these old gals: operator’s manual, shop manual and parts manual. Deere did some strange “recycling of chapters from “M”s and 40s . and a lot of the stuff for sale has tractor info the does not apply (ie front tire bearings), but for wrenching get the books. Nice machine . Mines a phase one 420, a beefed up 40.
He has no idea what he is doing,, shit in the bed
Had mine a couple of years now. Clearing an acreage with a chainsaw and a winch. Totally indestructible and a must have item. Pulls those logs over a brush pile or thru a cluster of trees with no effort or damage. Best tool you could have, no matter how you do the skidding 😅
Agreed! I find it very helpful, especially on my small property where I don't want my trails all torn up.
Yeah, mine a ts up like that too, did you ever find a solution?
Yup.. don't use it :)
there's nothing worse in problem solving then when you have two things causing the issue
Thats for sure! Makes it a bit difficult to diagnose.
I saw a video of somebody putting duct tape over a hole in a tire
Oh, it will work. And if not... well, you'll wish it had.
Think that's funny tried to help somebody one night at McDonald's that was car trouble the bearings were completely wore out of the water pump they cracked the plastic housing they put JB weld on it to hold it together and didn't understand why It wasn't working
Duct tape, jb weld and baling twine will fix ANYTHING. Ya just gotta have faith!
😂😂😂😂😂
This really helped alot with mine. My dad once welded his up like that and belt is still tight.
Yes, fathers have much wisdom. I am proud his knowledge has been passed on to the next generation.
And you want to tie down a load in your pick up truck properly by running the strap through the wheel.
Love it
Yes. One must be an expert in geometry and extraterrestrial calculations but otherwise it is a simple matter.
do you clean you logs after? I assume this is for that nice sawmill i see in the video? I just bought a woodland mill too!
I do pressure wash them before milling. When I first got my mill I tried milling a dirty log. I could hardly finish the one log it was dulled so fast. I wash them now. Which mill did you get? You're gonna LOVE it! Woodland Mills are the best affordable mills out there!

Ok,….coolest vid I’ve seen today. I didn’t figure it out til the end! Thanks for the content!
Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching!
be a great stump grinder for small stuff too
Wouldn't a shorter bar be better? The weight of the debarker would be closer to the motor.
It could be better. The logs I debark are on the ground so the longer bar works for me. If they were up on something then a shorter bar would work better- and better balanced.
