G Minor could be open G string open D string, Bb on the A string, G on the E string

this is where I start getting lost with theory. I know major and minor and where to play but why would I think to play the A minor over C. Any help would be appreciated if someone can help me understand

That mandolin sounds really nice. The high notes sound like something off a piano. I think this exercise is spot-on as helps you create a road map on the fret board that'll make getting around much easier. I don't play mandolin but I've seen Wayne in concert and really appreciate his playing ability. Anyone who can play at that level, can offer hints to improve your playing that'll get you off that plateau that you can land on that gets boring after a while. We all know things can only get better with practice, and these tips will make the progress go more quickly. And that's a good thing.
