Types of gland packings
Gland packings consist of a braided or twisted material, such as graphite, PTFE or aramid fibres, that are placed around a shaft or valve stem. The packing material is compressed against the shaft or stem by a gland, which is a mechanical seal that is tightened to create a secure, leak-free seal. The compression of the packing material creates a barrier that prevents the escape of fluids or gases and allows for smooth and efficient operation of the machinery.
There are several types of gland packings available, each designed to meet specific requirements and operating conditions. Some of the most common types of gland packings include:
PTFE gland packings: These packings are made of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and are ideal for use in applications that require high chemical resistance and low friction.
Graphite gland packings: Made of graphite fibres, these packings are highly resistant to high temperatures and pressures, making them ideal for use in steam applications.
Aramid gland packings: These packings are made of aramid fibres and are known for their exceptional strength and durability, making them ideal for use in high-pressure applications.
