According to my (independent) research, the secularization of "A Christmas Carol" began with Dickens, himself. Originally, it was written by two devout esoteric Christians, in America, named Mathew Franklin Whittier and his wife, Abby Poyen Whittier. Abby, in particular, intended it to be a spiritualist redemption story, in which all the supernatural elements were authentic, according to the teachings she had studied. I have extrapolted the scenario that after Abby's death in March of 1841, Mathew met with Dickens in Boston in January, 1842, gaining a personal introduction through his friend, Oliver Wendell Holmes. Mathew, a fan, handed his and Abby's manuscript over to Dickens, not realizing that Dickens was an imposter as a writer and as a social reformer. Dickens, facing debt in the fall of 1843, conceived what he privately called a "little scheme" to hurriedly secularize Mathew and Abby's manuscript into the story we are all familiar with. Dickens had thoughtlessly butchered a spiritualist redemption story into a "Ghost Story of Christmas." (I found objective evidence for this, in Dickens' handwritten draft which is held by the Morgan Library and Museum.) Each level of secularization after the 1843 publication, was yet another step away from Mathew and Abby's original novella.

The short story describes some things I think lost by the movie, but the heart of the written story is definitely there in the movie. One thing I think missed is the written story more strongly insists that their universe is a deterministic one. The whole collection of short stories by Ted Chiang, "Story of Your Life and Others" is just remarkable. I think you'd both enjoy reading, because some of the stories involve theology and the nature of reality (but I know as they aren't films they fall outside the scope of this podcast)
