The scene where Josephine Hutchinson, ( as Elizabeth Conroy) with John Hodiak, blew me away...one can tell she had enormous stage experience as she brought her Character's grief to life... She was simply superb...!!!

TRUE STORY! Based on the true story of Emerich Juettner, an elderly junk dealer who, like the character in the movie, only used to print counterfeit $1 bills to make ends meet. For 10 years, Juettner eluded the Secret Service's efforts to find him. He was finally caught in January, 1948, after a fire forced him to vacate his apartment on New York's Upper West Side, and move in with his daughter in Queens. The firemen who put out the fire left some of Juettner's belongings in a nearby alley. A few weeks later, a group of local boys found some of his $1 bills in the alley, realized they were fakes (the name "Washington" was misspelled as "Wahsington" on the bills), and turned them over to police. Juettner was arrested, but only sentenced to nine months in jail and a $1 fine. When 20th Century Fox bought the movie rights to his story, Juettner received more money than he had ever made as a counterfeiter.

People had so much class decency manners and good intentions back then. Today's world is a nightmare of pre-Armageddon terror.

I remember parts of this movie as a toddler with my mom n dad at the drive-in in albuquerque. thanks for my beloved memories. Later for us Boomers we had the late 50s tv series spin off "the Naked City."

Superb witty commentary from beginning to end throughout. Great film noir narrative. Photography and film showing city views and cultural activities of New York so educational. A few grey herrings here and there to keep viewer interested in plot line. No CGI, swearing, sex a d blood here, just good Saturday afternoon film. My teenager, 17, watched and loved it. Thank you.

Kojak and Sipowics' police precinct building. And the original NYC POLICE main building before they built the dystopian, post apocalypse styled 1PP. Also the narrator is that guy who always says "bye bye now" after he narrates some short comedy thing that used to come with movies.
