Sailing Te Tāiko
New Zealand
Приєднався 6 бер 2021
We’re Adam and Vicki. After spending 3 years sailing within New Zealand, we sailed our 40 ft sailboat Te Tāiko from New Zealand to Fiji and then to Vanuatu and New Caledonia. After spending 6 months sailing in the South Pacific, exploring its beautiful tropical islands and being warmly welcomed by the people who live there, we realised we're not quite ready to leave the South Pacific. After all, the South Pacific is said to have some of the best sailing destinations in the world. We're cruisers, why hurry? A big thank you to you for watching and a massive thank you to our Patreons for your support and helping make this possible.
In December 2021 we moved aboard our sailboat Te Tāiko, a Chico 40. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. We release a new video every Sunday.

KAYAK FISHING in NEW ZEALAND with KINGS WITH ANDY
If you've been following us for a while, then you'll know we've been skunked since we went ocean sailing. Adam is an experienced fisherman but we just can't seem to land a fish on Tāiko, not for want of trying. In this episode, Adam goes kayak fishing with an old friend who is an expert sea kayak fisherman. He takes us back to the basics in the hope we can start catching fish aboard Tāiko.
We hope you enjoy it!
As always, from the crew of Te Tāiko, thanks for watching.
Sincere thanks to Charlotte Rockstar Jones for composing and recording Te Tāiko's theme song.

Today we celebrate three years since we moved aboard Te Tāiko full time and we're no longer the same people we were three years ago. This is just a short video to acknowledge this anniversary and to say thank you. Whether you have subscribed to our UA-cam channel, left us a comment, seen us and said hi, support us on Patreon, sent us a message, had a meal with us, or gave us a place to stay, we...

Sorry but no video today. We've been working hard to top up the savings and have decided to have a two week break but we'll be back soon with more cool stuff. Excuse Vicki's grubby shirt...it is fieldwork after all. In the meantime, we have a load of videos that you can watch over the next two weeks! We hope you enjoy them! As always, from the crew of Te Tāiko, thanks for watching. Sincere than...
A MARMITE SANDWICH at NEW ZEALAND'S HIGHEST NORTH ISLAND LAKE
Переглядів 22828 днів тому
Welcome back to another video where we find the best place to eat a marmite sandwich (and a vegemite one too). In the last video we ate a marmite sandwich at Te Mata Peak, Havelock North, New Zealand but this week we go further afield. Let us know your thoughts…where is the best location to eat a marmite sandwich? Te Mata Peak or here? We hope you enjoy it! As always, from the crew of Te Tāiko,...

No, we don’t walk that fast…some scenes have been sped up. Covering song is ‘Just Walk’ by Colton Walls on Epidemic Sounds which we thought was fitting for this adventure. If you haven’t seen our epic half marathon walk to eat a marmite sandwich, follow this link to it on UA-cam. Keep an eye out on Sunday where we show you another awesome spot to eat a marmite sandwich in Hawke’s Bay, New Zeala...
WALKING a HALF MARATHON to EAT a MARMITE SANDWICH: WAS IT WORTH IT?
Переглядів 213Місяць тому
In this week’s video we need to have our car serviced. Since it is an all day affair, we take the opportunity to make the most of the day, and in true cruiser fashion, go for a walk from the centre of Hastings to Te Mata Peak on the outskirts of Havelock North, Hawke’s Bay New Zealand to enjoy a scenic lookout to have our marmite sandwich. Let us know if you think the walk was worth it. A long ...
Sailing Te Tāiko: Who are we?
Переглядів 250Місяць тому
We’re Adam and Vicki. After years of being career focused, we decided it was time to shake things up and sought a lifestyle that would provide us with new experiences, humble us, allow us to visit remote locations, and experience new cultures. In 2021, we traded our regular suburban lifestyle for a nomadic one and moved aboard our sailboat, Te Tāiko, a Chico 40. After three years sailing in New...
LEAVING OUR BOAT IN NEW CALEDONIA: FLYING TO NEW ZEALAND

We hope you enjoy it! Welcome back! If you’re new here, let’s recap…a lot’s happened. We’re Adam & Vicki who sailed our 40 ft sailboat from New Zealand to Fiji with the help of our friends Garth & Elizabeth and then set sail just the two of us from Fiji to Vanuatu and then New Caledonia. Our original plan was to end the cruising season in Australia, but after spending a few weeks in New Caledon...
A VIDEO OF ALL OUR SAILING DECISIONS: HAVE WE MADE THE RIGHT ONE?
Переглядів 587Місяць тому
Decision making is continuous. Decisions can be simple such as deciding what to order from a menu. But sometimes they can be more complex. Their consequences and their effects can vary from minimal impact to your daily life, to having major impacts, or sometimes their consequences or effects can be outside of your control. At the start of our sailing journey, the decisions we had to make were r...

Awww come on Andy, Stay one of the boys, like Larry & I. We don't catch fish. We just feed them for others to catch. I wouldn't know what to do do if I caught one. Merry Christmas you two.
Thanks Ian! A bit of Mahimahi on our next passage would be nice so we will put the newfound knowledge to work soon. All the best to you and family for the festive season. Cheers Adam and Vicki
Looking forward to watching your new voyages!
Thank you! Exciting times ahead and we’re looking forward to sharing them with you!
Good stuff. I will look forward to seeing your journey
Thank you! We’re excited to be sharing what’s coming up!
Congrats...
Thank you
I never keep my eggs in the fridge. I keep them in a cupboard and turn them over every few days. Works great, they last for weeks
Thank you for sharing that. That’s good to know. We have tried that but we weren’t successful. We may have missed a few turns though!
What sort of field work? Is it to do with pine trees?
Hi, Adam here. I’m a forest restoration ecologist. This clip was shot in an exotic tree stand where I’m running an experiment on how best to stimulate native forest regeneration. But my work is quite varied and centered on native forest restoration.
Wonderful! In the 1980's I took a first date on the exact same trail, camping just below Iti Magic hike, but we didn't last! Cannot blame the forest!
What a great idea for a first date. Maybe it was the row around the lake that did the trick 😃
Vegemite no flavour - WHAAAAAAT 😂. As you can tell we are Vegemite all the way.
😂😂 We must admit the gluten free one was actually quite good. After a few mouthfuls and with the calmness of Lake Waikareiti, all made it possible. We have a jar to use up now so we will now have to make it a series of places to eat marmite and vegemite sandwiches. Thanks for watching and commenting.
This was my favourite place to eat a vegemite sandwich. Only because i havent been there and it looks so serene
It’s really beautiful and we totally agree. It is so far our favourite place to eat a sandwich too. The vegemite is starting to grow on us though. Highly recommend visiting if you can. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Hey! 👋 I checked out your channel and loved the content! However, I think better SEO could help increase your reach. Want a free SEO audit to help grow your audience?
Absolutely brilliant !😂😂😂Only you two could make a marmite sandwich the hot topic for an entire episode!!! 😂PS VEGEMITE ALL THE WAY!!!!
Thank you Pam. Check out this Sundays video. There’s a left side entry into the Vegemite vs. Marmite debate. It’s shocking really …
Great hat Harry!!!!!!😂😂😂
Our forefathers would be proud of our level of sunsmartness.
Damn. Think we've forgotten something. Ah yes. The camera. Yeah you're right. Someone has to go back and get it. Awesome little segment. Thanks for sharing.
One time in the Coromandel we forgot we’d set our expensive Sony camera on time lapse while on the beach and made our way back to Tāiko in the tender. Made for a great Timelapse. But required a trip back to the beach … 🤦🏻♂️
Love it!😂😂
Thanks!
Well done. I enjoy your sense of humour. Have you had a scone at Peak House? Highly recommend.
Hello and thanks for watching and commenting! We haven’t tried one of those scones but will have to try one before we leave! All the best. Vicki and Adam
Like the bread and also i'm a crust eater as well. Egg sandwich would have been better, Haha. What a good walk you two.
Thank you! Awe yeah egg sandwich! Maybe something for a future episode - different fillings for different destinations 😆 Another big walk planned this week and the weather is looking good for it!
Yay I'm first. I was about 45+ years farming, and exposed to all the sun and rain you could get. No sun protection, full stop. Just a hat.Nothing happened. However, earlier, from the age of 1-9 or 10...I lived in a Bay where the beach was 5 minutes walk away. I used to get sunburn quite badly. The sunburn was treated, but not the protection from it. Still nothing developed. Years later at 50 or so I started getting bits of things on my skin. The oncologist after treatment, said, "don't worry. We're all going to get this." At the time, I belonged to a Naturist Club. So thought I'd have to give up my lifestyle. He went on to say..."if you were ever sunburned as a kid, things start showing up later on in life. Not straight away. But if you have been sunburnt, as a kid, any protection now, won't prevent, early childhood burns, it will just give you peace of mind." End of quote. Allegedly, there is 30% magnification of uv rays in snow and about salt water. So I was told. Marmite is best as a hot milk drink. I think. 👍 Thanks for sharing again. Loving your channel.
Thanks Bryan! Glad to have you back. We’ll cover up as much as we can manage now and hope for the best as we both had sun damage as youngsters. Interesting comments from your oncologist. We had a skin specialist describe how much sunscreen is intended to meet the marketed protection specs and I think most people will be under applying. Vast amounts required and easier to cover up unless of course you’re heading off to the Club for the afternoon 😅. Also interesting how the specialists can see skin damage on what to the naked eye looks pretty normal skin condition. Thanks so much for following and commenting!
How long are you in Wellington for!? I'm in Eastbourne. So close
Unfortunately our visit to welly was brief and we are further north now. But thanks for messaging!
Awesome you guys are home for a bit. Hope to catch up soon! Fingers crossed we can get some fishing in also Adam.
It’s great to be back for a visit and will make contact re fishing with you!
it must have been quite the culture shock being home
Yes, it was! Adam was a little overwhelmed by all the shops and the options. It was really nice being able to access some of old favourites again.
Curious as to what work would be available and worthwhile for a short time period at this time of the year. Are you working in the fruit pack houses. What was the price difference compared to flying?
Adam is a consulting ecologist so coming home provides an opportunity to do site work and reconnect with clients etc. The coach was way cheaper than flying. Per person the coach $85. Flying was $780 for two
It's always great to return home, hope to catch up in the future. Regards, Larry. Tomoduchi.
Hi Larry, great hearing from you thank you. Hope all’s well on your side. See you later! Cheers Adam and Vicki
I've got plenty of good sailing mates in Noumea. If you need someone to pop in and keep an eye on the boat, sing out!
Thanks very much!
Magnificent!
It was amazing.
A very interesting video, shows a sailing life is all about making decisions all the time, some big and some small, and being flexible. Cant wait to catch up again.
Thank you for commenting and look forward to catching up again soon!
The New Caledonia flag is the French one blue white red because it is French
Thank you. Yes, we now know that and have since changed it. At the time we bought the flag, it’s what the chandleries were selling which aligned with what the internet said was the New Caledonian flag. Thanks for your comment and pointing it out.
Hi guys, when was this filmed? We are looking at heading in and out of the pacific and would love to know if New Cal is open for cruisers again after the unrest. Thanks in advance, Dame.
Hi Dame, we entered Noumea earlier this month and haven’t seen anything concerning. Lots of friendly cruisers around the marina. Hope this helps.
Amazing video guys!! Loved it. Thank you.xx
Thank you Charlotte!
Love Noumea have done a lot of sailing there. Just be weary of sharks. Noumea has Bull & and tiger shark's. Talk to the locals is the best bet.
Thanks very much for your comment. We have heard the same thing. Good idea getting local knowledge. All the best. Adam and Vicki
@sailingtetaiko I heard the snakes are venomous, but they have tiny mouths and would be unlikely to land a bite. Definitely check the dingy each time.. They give me a fright every time! Great boat, the Chico 40. Loves having the Genoa outboard sheet off the toe rail on a snatch block once the wind gets more than 50 degrees true wind angle
We are very appreciative of the upwind ability of the Chico 40.
Hey Vicki, that wash you experienced, was what we had in the sounds everytime a ferry went past. Back in the mid 90s when I had my first phone. We couldn't take photos, not even text, so have no proof. But it's true. I thought we were going to have a super close up of you having the cake. You know the one with the real cream. I mean real cream. Thanks for sharing folks. Great editing too. Cheers from down here.
Hi Bryan, the ferries sure can create a wash that sometimes makes you feel like you’re back at sea! When we sailed into the Nananu passage in Fiji, the wind had picked up to 18 knots and there was quite a wind chop in the pass. To add to the excitement, there were no channel markers as Navionics had indicated there would be. Next minute, an inter-island passenger ferry overtook us in the passage and left quite a wake for us to go through. The passengers seemed quite amused by the situation and were filming us as they went past 😂we didn’t film it either but it did happen and at least we could now follow the ferry through the channel. Real cream is a must on a sweet treat. None of this fake stuff otherwise Adam would have had it all to himself 😀thanks for watching and commenting, Vicki
Fancy having a stow away. Signal Island is a beautiful place.
It sure is a beautiful place.
Mmmm a lot of bubble corrosion around your gooseneck , ??
Yes, we have a lot of paint bubbles on the mast.
Video far from boring thankyou for adding this episode this is another place I'm looking forward to getting to
Thank you Matt. Definitely recommend Whangaroa. Lanes Cove is so tucked away it feels like a long stay anchorage for sure. Thank you for watching and commenting!
I'm a bit late with this comment. I've been in and out of signal. Grrrr.!! First world problem. Haha.! Hey after Australia, there's a ton of Pacific Islands to see. One I'd love to visit, Suwarrow Atoll, where Timaru man, Tom Neale spent a few years....would be on my list, plus Pitcairn Island, plus Easter Island. Why.? Because they're there. 😂 Looking forward to seeing you check out New Caledonia. Thanks for sharing. All the very best.
We agree completely there are so many places in the pacific to see. We have really been thinking about this recently so that we aren’t rushing on and missing desirable locations unnecessarily. We share our plans soon. Cheers, Adam and Vicki
Should be aiming for the FAD's Adam... dragging a lure behind you haha... nothing like a night time bill fish to keep you going. Great vid guy enjoy Noumea
You got me there Andy :D need to flip the priorities around in favour of fishing. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Cheers, Adam
Your video got us wondering; some googling teaches us that you can roast and then freeze most vegetables. Do you think that these would have been allowed through? Seeing that they are no longer "fresh" but now cooked? Thanks for sharing you wonderful adventure.
It was a question we asked but we never took it further. What did you find out?
Wow, Brings back memories.
Good to hear :)
I am from Vanuatu in port-vila 🎉❤😊
Awesome. We loved it there.
Vicki thank you for sharing. It was really interesting to hear what you had to say on trust. We are very very early in our sailing journey and I have to build that trust and remember that it’s so important. Thank you 🙏🏼
Thanks for watching and commenting on the episode. I’m pleased to hear the message regarding trust resounds with you in your journey. It’s certainly something we’ve had to learn and accept that there are different roles/responsibilities on boats. We wish you all the best with your sailing adventure and we hope you have the most amazing experiences. We may see you out there somewhere one day. Thanks for always taking the time to comment too. Cheers, Vicki
Hey Vicki, I just read your online intro to yourselves and the boat naming. "Te Táiko" you can't go wrong. Loving your channel. Two people with no pretences. Thank you again for sharing. Awesome episode. All the very best from down here in Aotearoa.
Hi Bryan. Thank you so much for your comment. Great that you found our website and thank you for taking the time to look through it. We’re really happy with the name. Was quite memorable as we were sailing out of NZ there were lots of Tāiko’s flying around us. We haven’t quite managed to get out to Great Barrier to volunteer with the Tāiko chick survey, but will get there one day. Thanks again for watching and always nice to hear from you. Vicki
@@sailingtetaiko if it's any consolation to you,; when I was doing possums for DoC in the Sounds, I missed out on a chance to do tree planting on Stephen's Island, yes of Tuatara fame. But wait there's more. Also missed out on a chance of going in the deep south, to count and weigh and band Albatross chicks. From memory, I think it was Campbell Island.? I don't understand. I'm a nice guy. Why me.? Lol. Here comes a violin moment. Thanks for the upload.
We hear you and feel consoled. At least you got to do the possum work 😆 I guess it’s not what happens in life but rather how you deal with it that counts 👌
@@sailingtetaiko I feel better. Back to reality. When do you think you'll get to Oz.?
Thanks, watch this space for our updated travel plans…
Adam is my hero and I think Vicki is extremely brave
Thank you. I think he’s pretty good too 🥰
We're so sorry that this has taken almost all day to upload! Adam edited this one and I think he's done a great job. We hope you enjoy it! Thanks for your patience.
I was there 2weeks ago peeping for our passage to Australia . Wasn't checking out fun lol
Yes it really was!
HI Adam & Vicky, great to meet up with you. Had dinner on dry land tonight, Mahi Mahi and fresh salad. Beats sausages and pies for the last three nights. Tied up Tomadachi and everyone scarpered. Family really liked my haircut as well. Cheers Ian
Great hearing from you, Ian. Awesome to meet you in both Vanuatu and New Caledonia! Enjoy family and home after your big ocean adventures. Let’s stay in touch and thanks for watching. Cheers!
You didn’t say if the engine is now running smoothly?
That’s true and thank you for commenting. We have put 12 hours on the engine since the footage was shot and it has performed perfectly. So fingers crossed we are in the clear with it now. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Adam
Lovely travels, you are clearly enjoying yourselves!!
Hi Claire - thanks for commenting great to hear from you. We are having the most amazing time. All that prep is paying off. Thanks for your support. Cheers, Adam
