The 3 Ways Sound Voltex FIXES Music Gaming
Often overlooked are the progression systems that music games offer to encourage players to continue playing and improving. Sound Voltex has a lot of carrots and sticks or something.

As a sdvx player for three years, i agree with a lot of things you say. The reasons why i enjoy playing sdvx to this day.

i could remember gridning for fcs in osu just for that pp. not fun. not fun at all. now playing mania(4k) and arcaea is much more enjoyable, given that scoring and performance are roughly equivalent, unlike osu's tempermental nature.

It doesn't really do anything that's been done before though. Like some have already pointed out, Arcaea has a rather similar approach to player's progression: scoring, potential system, skill courses - it's all there. I think what should have been the sole focus of the entire video (a missed potential dare I say) is 'various scoring systems' and the way different games approach them' and what do they mean in terms of player's progression. Like, beatmania IIDX has a different scoring system that might seem a little weird when compared to most other modern rhythm games and on the surface might seem very tame 88.88% (equivalent of 888888 in SDVX) to get the highest grade (AAA). The catch though is it has extremely tight timing windows for the highest grade 'PGreat', but (!) a relatively lenient window for the lowest grade 'good' that won't break your chain, so the entire argument of there's a way 'between low score -> FC' is somewhat irrelevant to IIDX. In IIDX you can get an FC with an abysmally low score way before you can achieve the highest grade of AAA since 'PGreat' gives you 2 points and 'Good' while not breaking the chain gives 0 points (the real maximum score (EX score) = amount of notes in the song * 2) which basically boils down to IIDX favouring accuracy over anything else and an FC just being a cherry on top of a good score. So I believe there is definitely something to discuss about scoring in general there. And that's just one example.

While I do agree with what you said here, I think it would make more sense to use IIDX as an example - a game where missing a note means NOTHING and timing literally means EVERYTHING.

I'm a Chunithm player, and the Rating system has admittedly been a motivator that has changed my play habits quite a bit. Rather than swinging between chasing the clear/FC on charts, I find I don't mind slowly pushing towards the S rank threshold to push my rating higher and get confirmation that I am indeed improving and using rating as a subtle indicator that maybe I should start trying to push slightly harder charts. I haven't really gotten this sense of progression in a lot of other games (especially combo-based scoring systems, shudder), which has been pretty cool. I know a lot of Chuni players opt to hide their rating but I think as an intermediate player starting to push the upper echelon of charts it has been a great carrot on a stick thus far--even if it does technically suffer from "optimal" play habits you mentioned, like farming perfect ranks on easy charts within a difficulty bracket.

omg i wish i saw this sooner... really good video! one thing i've noticed about newer players getting into sdvx is that they tend to carry over the bad habits reinforced by other clear/fc-based games, grinding specific charts at a low level, pushing from clear all the way to UC, and pushing higher difficulties too fast. you managed to say everything i felt about how volforce reinforces better habits. once again, excellent video :3

arcaea has nearly the exact same systems, a score based on 10mil = perfect (with an extra point awarded for pure perfects), a grade system to give meaningful marks for certain thresholds, and the potential system that values your overall performance! arcaea was my first rhythm game experience that i *stuck* with, and seeing this video really helped to contextualize *why* i stuck with it! this was an insanely well made video!!
