The Rift in the Film Industry & How to Change It
Do u have to design the costumes or can u just find pieces here n there at shops ?
Heya! It's a combo, actually. Sometimes, it's designing something specific that must be built; other times, it's going out into the world and finding what you need at stores, rental houses, and showrooms. Just depends on the project.
I love how both their rooms are the same exact aesthetic. Wonder what that means about their look books....
Ha! Great musing. I was traveling and borrowed a friend's office. So...? 😜. Thanks for watching the video! Appreciate it.\
lovely ! I'm writing a screenplay where there is a business meeting becomes a physical fight... as my intention is to make the 3d characters in unreal, would you care to coment on character design for animation and games ? meanwhile, cheers from Rio
Heya! Thanks for the great question. Character design for animation and games always starts with the same questions. The tools in which the characters are brought to life is different. In film/tv you are working with real people wearing physical clothing. In animations, you are creating a digital body dressed in digital clothing that may or may not be realistic. It could be a heightened version of the body such as someone being more curvy, having larger muscles, or being an abstraction of the human body like in the film Elemental. ua-cam.com/video/hXzcyx9V0xw/v-deo.html The questions character design questions we want to ask are all the same. Character design sets context and the relationships between characters and the world around them. Create brings meaning to our stories.. The spaces people navigate also matter in setting up that context. So, you'll want to think about that as well. The questions to ask are: --What do you want people to know and understand about the characters? --How do the characters relate to themselves? Others? The larger world around them? --What do the characters think about themselves; what do they want others to think of them; and what do others actually think of them? --How does that change over the course of the film? (this works on all lengths of films) My perspective on character design is this: Character design is about first impressions and transformation. How do we want to introduce the character to the audience? What do we want them to think about them? Then, how does this character change over the course of the story? This can be different for each character. One might have a large shift while another might not really change much ala the constant/reliable friend. Hope this is a helpful answer.
You go Sarah
This is great info. I'm using generative AI to visualize the script for the Pitch=deck "Look books" that I've been making for Directors over the past year and a half. I would've liked to hear their thoughts on using AI to create original imagery assets for pitch decks.
Heya! Apologies. Though I'd responded. Original assests with AI are basically concept art in my mind. The point of any lookbook or pitch deck is to get the visual aesthetic of our films across to others. Often times, what we see in an image isn't what someone else sees, especially when it comes to reading a script and how it's interpretated by others. We all see things differently, which I illustrate in many of my workshops. Using AI comes down the your aesthetic choice. There is no right or wrong way. Just what's effective or ineffective for the story you are telling. some people are going to love AI generated images because they are going to be able to see all the details of your vision. Myself, I don't like the AI aesthetic which still feels animated rather than a realistic image which is what I'm searching for when researching for my decks for live action. For an animated film or game, AI all the way. And, again, others wont care. It's really going to depend on your audience. One argument for why to use existing shots/images: those images comes context from the film you're pulling from. If this is an influential or comp film, then you're giving people some context of what your film will be like based on what's out there already. Hope this is helpful.\
