The World's Wanderers invites listeners on a transcendent musical journey through Percy Shelley's poem of the same name. It is a meditation of wonder, curiosity, and awe, as we contemplate the relentless movement of the stars, the moon, and the wind. The celestial bodies mark the unceasing passage of time, and in their steady rhythm, we are reminded of our own weariness, our desire for rest, and life's fleeting nature. As the music unfolds, we are drawn into the contemplation of life's ultimate fate: the final, inevitable rest that awaits not just us, but the very stars and moon that wander the skies.
Tell me, thou star, whose wings of light
Speed thee in thy fiery flight,
In what cavern of the night
Will thy pinions close now?
Tell me, moon, thou pale and grey
Pilgrim of heaven’s homeless way,
In what depth of night or day
Seekest thou repose now?
Weary wind, who wanderest
Like the world’s rejected guest,
Hast thou still some secret nest
On the tree or billow?
--Percy Bysshe Shelley, 1792 - 1822

Great piece. I would love to sing the Tenor part for this. It looks so fun.
1:46
Beatiful.
Very creative approach! I imagine this one would be incredibly fun to sing!
Lovely work! I recently performed a fairly famous canon on this wonderful text earlier this month, so I was delighted to see that you posted your own composition on the text. Measures 62-84 remind me quite a bit of Suliko (arr. Brent Wells). Finally, I'd just like to comment on the ostinato with the basses at the end (I love a good ostinato figure!). Love your work as always, Lawlor! Bravo! ❤
Thanks so much! I appreciate the kind words!
Why is no one mentioning the subtle use of workpainting? It’s so cool!
We'll be singing this tonight, so beautiful and touching!
Awesome! How'd it go? What choir are you in?
I think the audience really loved it... our choir is called Collegium Vocale Friedberg and the singers come from the Augsburg area in Germany.
Found this English version, thanks to your comment. It’s quite beautiful. I’m still puzzled by the original language. I thought I knew some German but this is strange to me. Finally, where did the words come from? The English version is a poem in its own right. Any help for a puzzled English professor?
The poem was originally written in German, but then translated into Swedish, and the Swedish version is the more popular, which is what you heard.
Is there translation of the text available? This is a beautiful piece and I would like to know the words in English.
Thank you! Yes! I have an English version on my channel: "In This Sweet Summertime." Go check it out!
I’m Japanese.I was attracted to beauty melody of this choral song and I got this music sheet in Endeavor. We gonna perform in December 21 , Advent. It’ll be first performance in Japan.Thank you for such a beautiful song.
Thank you! And thanks for letting me know about the performance! Good luck!
Thank you for sharing this! We will perform your song as an ensemble in south Germany. This example helps tremendously in studying your fabulous piece.
lovely
It's great song💚💚
This is such a beautiful piece, once I saw this I am full on ready to bring it to my choir director to see if we can perform this because THIS REALLY HITS SOMEWHERE IN THE HEART❤❤
Thank you! ❤️❤️ I hope you get to sing it with your choir!
Kinda have a melody like Eriks Esenvalds' Only in sleep
Sir, this is so beautiful 😊
Thank you!
@@clarkwilliamlawlorif everything goes well, our choir will sing this during our Christmas Cantata performance this year. 🙏
I have been to this song on repeat. What a great song! 💝
Thank you!
I just loved it the moment i heard it. Immediately suggested to my choir director and we purchased copies for our chamber choir based in South Africa.
That's so awesome! Thank you! When is your performance?
That’s a nice song.
This is the most "special" Christmas carol, love it at the 'first sight‘!!!’
I never thought that I would actually WANT to hear the stagger breathing in a piece. The very last few measures where all parts are humming some sort of pedal tone, you can hear every breath that the sections take but because they don't abruptly stop before breathing, it sounds so smooth still as if the breathing was written into the piece which coincidentally fits perfectly with the context and sound of the piece.
so gorgeous!!! love how you chose the 6/4 time signature to accommodate both the duple and triple feels you used so beautifully. it translates onto the page in such a seamless way. choral sight-singers like me are grateful for composers like you! hope i get to sing this someday!!
Thank you!
Since I arrange choral pieces myself (mostly for my choir) and love a cappella music (I am also software engineer and was born 1980 too... ;)), I am really fascinated by this arrangement. I listen to it several times every day at the moment, i think already for 3 or 4 weeks, sometimes to analyze the harmonies and their interaction with the lyrics , sometimes to sing along with one of the voices and mostly just to enjoy and get touched by it. While many of the modern arrangements are often overloaded with dissonances, you have a very elegant way to use and resolve them. This arrangement is one of the most interesting (in the musical sense) and at the same time beautiful and soul touching pieces that I met in the last time. Thank you. Edit: Not to forget: The recording by Rocky Mountain Chamber Choir is stunning too!
Thank you! That means a lot!
I’m captivated by this piece. My church music director called it elegant and lush. I agree with her!
Thank you! 🙏
LOved it! Nice!
beautiful😍
Beautiful!! Congrats!!
Thank you!!
Beautiful music but honestly it is too busy because it's hard to understand what they are singing unless you are looking at the sheet music.
Thanks for the feedback! I think this is pretty typical of choral music. Having everyone sing all the words together might make them easier to understand, but it also makes the music less interesting, so I guess it's a tradeoff. Cheers!
It's beautiful indeed. Maybe its the mix...just maybe. Great song and arrangement.
Lovely! Great harmony <3
Thank you so much!
Just brilliant!
Thank you!
Just stunning!
Thank you! 😊
This is amazing! What language is that? It's so pretty and unique!
Norwegian. It is a beautiful language...and text!
@@clarkwilliamlawlor Though HA Brorson was Danish, of birth and language! The text was originally written in Danish. This is a Norwegian translation of the original Danish text.
@@TFreckle That's right, Brorson was Danish, and the melody is Swedish - yet this is probably mostly sung in Norway these days. I have always thought of this psalm as the Scandinavian version of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen".
In Denmark the psalm is usually sung with Carl Nielsen's melody.
thats a cool composition!
I had to do this for my school chorale song😅
Absolutely beautiful, congratulations ❤
I CANT, THIS WAS SPECTACULAR (that's the right word for it)!!!!!!!!
stunnin, shinin, dunno what else to say
Bravo, truly amazing
Que hermosura 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Lovely !
Thanks for listening!
I was sightreading as Tenor 1 as I went through the video! Beautiful work! :)
Thanks you! (Fellow tenor 1 here)

"Mitt hjerte alltid vanker" ("My Heart Always Wanders") is an old Scandinavian Christmas song. Not fond of anti-Semitic Norway, but the song is haunting and cold like the people of North Dakota…
Go North Dakota! Also, I hope you don't miss the irony of generalizing about an entire country's generalization of another culture
Good sir, I lack words to describe this beautiful piece. Where do I even begin? Well, I don't know where would be appropriate to begin, so I'll take a guess: How about the overall theme of the song? This is a very solemn tone that seems to be almost warning the listener; however, it knows not to take itself too seriously. The use of vibrato (especially in the D section; you've gotta adore those sopranos) and the ghostly noises bring a sense of silliness to this supernatural symphony. The staccato and legato are balanced precariously so that it matches the heaviness of the text. Overall, this is an excellent adaptation of Mr. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and I believe that he would surely approve of such a song. In regards to the music, let's discuss the sheer level of variety throughout the piece. There is a certain level of repetition exemplified throughout the choral that is brought to life with variations, both big and small. In spite of this, however, it is very tentative to the level of variation as to not lose the listener. I could imagine that the average person (someone who can't read sheet music, for instance) would be able to appreciate the incredible quality and complexity of the piece but not be consumed, overwhelmed, and overstimulated. Furthermore, this is especially emphasized with the level of dissonance (don't think I don't see that C°7 - B°7/G - Cm; loving that resolution). The practice of that balancing act is hard at times and perhaps one of the most difficult things to achieve as a composer (I know it is for me, at least), but you seem to have performed this balancing act effortlessly! That is beyond respectable, my friend. As for particular moments I enjoyed, I found the tenor and piano solos most enjoyable. I'll have to try out the tenor solo one day. I could go on and on, but I believe that my point has been made: *This is truly something special.* Bravo, Clark! Keep up the good work! 🌟🌟🌟
Wow, such a glowing--and *detailed*--review! Well put. I was certainly going for solemn and spooky, but also fun ("not taking itself too seriously"). Thank you so much! Please share this with anyone you think might enjoy programming it for their fall choir concert!
@@clarkwilliamlawlor I will! I'll share it with my choir director as well as a few other directors in my area. Maybe I'll take a crack at the piano part! Once again, bravo, good sir!
