B-25 "Apache Princess" Giant RC Moki 400cc Field Repair, Cam ring-gear replacement.
Watch Thomas Schmidt and Stephan Zaun from www.Aeroflug.de perform "on-wing" repairs to a Moki 400cc, 4-stroke, 5-cylinder radial engine installed on "Apache Princess" B-25 Mitchell. The cam ring-gear failed during start-up and needed replacement. The cam ring-gear is responsible for opening the intake and exhaust valves via the lifters. It is driven by two smaller gears which are driven by the crankshaft. Additionally, one of these two gears also operates the impulse pump which provides pumping air to the carburetor fuel pump.
Access to the cam-ring gear was gained by pulling the prop hub and removing the nose dome. It is unclear what caused the failure of these two cam drive gears. One possible scenario is that one of the gears failed and the other gear subsequently failed as it was unable to drive the cam ring by itself. No broken pieces of gear teeth were found which indicates that the teeth were simply ground down to fine shavings.
The cam ring drive housing was thoroughly flushed and cleaned, new gears installed and packed with grease. The Moki is a dry sump-type engine and this section is only lubricated by grease. The crankshaft bearings, connecting rod bearings and pistons are all lubricated by the 1:40 to 1:50 synthetic premix oil in the fuel via the intake section.

CARF P-51 Partial-gear landing

First flight of my P-51 ends with a partial gear landing... left gear would not extend beacause the POS LADO door controller did not open the door. This LADO retract mod is really finicky... I would not recommend them. The door and the gear controllers don't talk one another and the controller will shutdown if it detects a jam. Hi - FANTASTIC DISPLAY !!! The actual real life plane was transported in the USA under the belly of the mighty airship Hindenburg where her pilot lt. Alexandru Papană used it on airshows and for a while was sponsored by Shell. If sombody wants to see the actual plane flying please check out the movie The Great Waldo Pepper ( 1975 ) where Waldo idol the german flying ace Ernst Kessler ( Ernst Udet ? ) is using it to display an outside loop - the last great stunt which remained ....anyway after Papană returned to Romania the plane remained in the US being owned by many people and had a distinguished career helping many pilots to achieve top ratings in the aerobatic world. After many years ended up in the movie . At this point the original Bramo ( Argus ? ) engine was long gone being replaced by americans mainly Lycomings or Continentals generally when she acquired her new master. If my sources are right in the movie she is powered by a 260 hp Continental....After the movie was completed the airframe was seen very seldom in the air being at this point hopelessly out performed by much younger designs ....but her luck still holded out. Sombody acquired it and after a short return to the sky she was donated to the AIR & SPACE MUSEUM ( Smithsonian ? ) in Washington DC where after restoration she was - and still is !!!! - put on display in her original YR - PAX paint scheme. .....If sombody could confirm or deny any of this above mentioned- fabulation - about this wonderful aircraft please do so . Any new information is greatly appreciated. Many thanx to the building team for their efforts in recreating this famous aircraft type .... and FOREVER BLUE SKIES Herr Bücker wherever you are.

Unbelievable!! As a pilot, I cannot see how someone on the ground can fly (and land) an aeroplane as well as that - I could not do as well if I was sat in it. I almost forgot to add: what a magnificent piece of kit!! 😉
