Celica ST162 with 4th Gen 3sgte Swap
It’s ready for a…paint job! Seriously though, it looks great. Long road to getting all that done
Sway bar are like condoms. It’s great to have but feels so much better when off
How did it come out??
There is a recent video in my shorts. Link below. I'm glad I used the fiberglass. It's been sitting in the garage for months, so I'm happy those areas are getting waterproof protection. ua-cam.com/users/shortsHFmXYTBHHrY?si=4JOFV__vaShR5LCt
@@Suburban_Garbage Hey man - i’m about to do some fiberglass repair but i’m recommended to use Bondo Glass and Gold Filler for the second layer, what are your thoughts or should i just use only the Bondo Short Fiber Filler?
@@hellenicbeats is the base material fiberglass? Like a boat or motorcycle fairing. That's a different animal depending on the repair. If it's sheet metal I would use something a little higher quality than Bondo like evercoat kitty hair or fibral lite. You can cheese grater that to rough it in then use a glaze to fill in pinholes and get it flat.
u can use filler on bare metal but u have to use a good primer over the filler to seal it off
I ended up using fiberglass filler in the repair areas followed by polyester. I think the previous fill job was too thick for Bondo alone.
Well it’ll ride better with it off anyway lol
@@Monz117 took mine off and it rides much smoother on/offroad.
Would that Result in Brakes Overheating??? Thanks that’s my issue on a 07 Prius
Can't say for sure. That was not a issue with the Highlander. Overheating brakes sounds more like a seized caliper. You can test it by jacking up the wheel and see if it spins freely
@@Suburban_Garbage thanks 👍
Yup . I can relate. Saving grace is parts are cheap and available. DIY bankruptcy kit
Lol. I ruined my first car, a Cherokee, by doing dumb teenager things. I think in my delusional mind I was trying to redeem myself with the jeep gods... At least wrenching in the garage keeps me out of trouble.
Wow, thank you for sharing this. Mu tundra has 267k. It's hard to beat these trucks
I saw your st162 engine swap I just blow mine up and am looking to do the same swap wondering if your willing to get into contact and tel me about some of the issues:)
I'm happy to help answer questions. Unfortunately I don't have any social media other than UA-cam. If you post your questions in the chat for the Celica video I'll respond or maybe make a short to show you what I did to address your issue. Good luck with the project. In my opinion it's worth the effort.
Let ‘er eat! Angle grinders are the best tools.
I'd like one of every size. Next purchase might be a 9" for big iron.
That U joint clip is not seated properly! Please check it.
Good catch. I'll check that and give it an extra squeeze if needed
I need help with the wiring,,, my cluster, windows don’t work.🥺🥺
Hrm.. that's an odd one. From my memory the cluster and the window are on two separate circuits, so it's probably two incorrectly spliced wires. There's only a couple points where the two harnesses cross over; ignition key hot, always hot, fuel pump relay, oil pressure, and temp. Best advice I can give is to double check all of those. Hope that helps. Good luck
My 86 has a 2s-cle 2.0 I wanna swap a 2.2 from a Camry think it’s worth it
Looking good man.
Thanks for the comment, and good luck with the Ranger!
@s
Send it. Doin the exact same thing to a 99 Ranger 4x4.
Thanks for the comment, and good luck on the Ranger. I painted it up and it looks good enough for a old Jeep.
@@Suburban_Garbage thanks. And good luck to you. Offroad, way of life. 🤙🤙
Wow, I hear this sound all the time on my Highlander. I thought it was a totally normal sound the car made! My ABS lights have been on for a while now and that explains it. Thank you so much for this video.
just found mine also broken off
Good solution, as usual. I’m working on cars today too. Wife got the business end of a survey flag in her tire yesterday, in the turning lane(Mike Jones!) of course.
I haven't had a nail/puncture in my tire since I moved. They must mix nails in the asphalt down there. Good luck!
Mines engaging all the time and brakes dragging
@theory816 can’t figure it out down to 40, cv axle going bad down to 35
@theory816 I used a surface temp gun and hit the rotors, warm but not hot. Hotter than front though…car shakes a bit because of it too
@theory816 slightly dragging?
@theory816 actually I change my back brakes they were beyond shot and shouldn’t have been
@theory816 no lights here which is weird
I got some of those wheels but they are 17x9, how much did you pay for yours?
$500 for the set. They've been powder coated but still in good shape
MUSTARD! Marching forward! Yeah man, that looks rough. Wish I could help, but they’ve got me completely jammed up at work right now
I did the same to my ST162 back in the late 90s… i swapped the 3SFE for a first gen 3SGTE. I ran into a few issues with the tranny, initially I used a V6 camry 5 speed but the gearing didn’t feel right so I ended up sourcing an MR2 turbo 5 speed and that seemed like the perfect match for the motor… fun times besides the overheating and boost leak issues tho! 😂
So…just curious, is there any original metal left in this thing?
It's 90% rust free! I thought a Jeep would be easier because it's small and a convertible. Too bad this one got flipped on it's side at one point.
@@Suburban_Garbage Yikes! Well, either way, you’ll be an experienced body work man by the time this is over.
Oh hell yeah! That’s Legend!
You believe it if I told u , I still have the 3sfe in mine and it don’t want to die , got the guts of the head gasket leaking outside the head and doesn’t over heat , sucks on power , was it a plug and play with the motor and trans ?
My 3sfe was still going strong when I pulled it. Couldn't't kill it. Not really plug and play. The wiring harness needs to be merged and I fabricated two transmission mounts. As far as swaps go not too terrible.
Looks like a ton of fun! Next time I wanna tag along.
Thanks man. Exactly what I was looking for.
I had to replace mine. The cheapest mechanic I found was at $2,600 with labor! Some wanted over $3,000 including the dealer. Not a cheap fix!
Mine makes a squirting sound or chirping sound
Love your st162 videos man, keep this up!
Love it 😍 Getting ready to put this same engine (gen 4) into my 1992 Toyota Celica Convertible… Any suggestions? 😂🤷🏼♂️
I'm currently editing a video on some things I overlooked, so keep an eye out for that. I was in such a rush to get the engine running I didn't perform any maintenance items to it... Just spark plugs and oil. While you have the engine out of the car do the full timing belt kit, HFH and HFHOE, and check your manifold bolts (one of mine was broken). I'd also say send the harness to a reputable company. I went DIY and I think the $250 would be well spent. Good luck and happy wrenching!
Looking into getting an st162 at the moment, such gorgeous cars. Yours is brilliant, though personally if I get one I'd like to keep it NA
160, 000 miles, maybe you should buy a new one... like how long does a company need to give you free support? Shit ford cant make a transmission that lasts that long
Good point. I've been driving Toyotas so long sometimes I forget. My concern was the loss of brake boost. Most people wouldn't know what to do if they lost boost and it could cause an accident. That and the part was $1200.00, so I had a little sticker shock. I've had a few Chrysler products the whole car needs a rebuild at 100k.
Hi nice video :) Im goint to install a bucket seat too in my st162, did you just crew in seat belt buckle to the mount and seat?
screw*
I used the factory seat belt mounts. I unscrewed the belt portion and ran it through the belt hole in the seat, and the buckle portion can poke through the other side. It's lines up pretty well.
sheeesh
Mine is broke too and I don’t know how to fix it lol
Thanks for messaging. It was pretty easy to replace, and the parts rather cheap. If I remember correctly all you need is a M5 hex wrench and a 14mm box wrench.
Couid you reach out to me doing a 3sgte swap 4th gen. Had question about waste gate. Thx
I don't have any way to message other than the comments. FYI, I used the factory waste-gate and BOV, and since I don't have an electric speed sensor the computer limits boost to 8 PSI. Other than the wiring everything remained factory. I plan to increase the boost either with a bypass switch, or a manual boost controller. Message if you want more details.
can you tell me where you got the hood scoop from to cover the intercooler , i have a 185 alltrac that i am doing a gen 4 conversion to and i want to run the top mount intercooler
Cool. I've always wanted the alltrac. This my poor man's attempt. I checked my records and I can't find exactly where I got the scoop from. I think it was from race scoops, but it looks like they no longer carry it. When they carried it they advertised it as a roof scoop not a hood scoop but it fit nicely. Good luck with your project.
Can you tell me what year Solara transmission you’re using ?
This is awesome and very inspiring! I'm looking to swap out the engine on my 1986 Celica as well. Watching this gives me a bit more confidence, thanks!
Good luck. The car handles the changes well. I had a few doubters that thought it would ruin it, but I think it's a better version of itself.
Got a rust pimple? Just call Dr. Rust Pimple Popper!
Can you tell me more about the Solara transmission? Are you still running that? Thanks!
Yeah, still running strong. It's a V6 manual from a 3.0 solara/Camry. It's a e153 setup for fwd. The back motor mount needs to be made custom. Everything else was pretty straightforward. Clutch and flywheel are MR2 turbo parts.
What did you use for axles? I'm getting my parts together for a winter swap.
Good question. That is the part that makes it all come together. I used MR2 turbo inners and es250 outers. Good luck with the swap.
Ouch, major brake failure. Guess I should listen to those calls from people who want to talk about my car’s extended warranty?
Nope the warranty guys just take your money and say thanks
Lol the scam? I rather just buy preowned parts
MAJOR BRAKE FAILURE, TOYOTA!
I also have a 1986 celica gts with a 3sgte shoved in it! Yours is much prettier than mine though.
Thanks for the compliment. I'm glad someone else is crazy enough to spend way too much time and money on these old Toyotas
@@Suburban_Garbage Jw what wiring harness are you using? The guy I bought it from made a very sketchy one and I want to replace it asap
I did the wiring myself. It was a little time consuming, but once I got the diagrams figured out it went smoothly. I left a few things off like the A/C, and I wired in a aftermarket cooling fan. DM me if you have a question. Mine looks pretty ugly but I wrapped everything in electrical tape and plastic sheeting to dress it up.
Nice
Did that trans just mount up to the gen4, looking for a longer faith gear, I already have a solara. Thanks
It was a 2000 solara V6 manual transmission, and the bell housing bolts all matched. I used a MR2 turbo lightweight flywheel from eBay, and a Luk OEM replacement clutch.
All the gears are slightly longer than the s54. You can use any MR2 turbo Limited slip as well.
What's your rpm like at 65mph?
Nice. I think the aw11 is an awesome car. I can't tell you what the RPM is at 65 at the moment. I've got the suspension pulled apart for new struts. From what I remember at 80mph it's turning about 3500 rpm in 5th. The s54 would be at 4k rpm
Drove the other day, and 65 it's turns about 2700 rpm
@@Suburban_Garbage I think I'm around the same rpm also thanks bud
I have a gen4 in a 88 Mr and its great, upgrade the intercooler and you be amazed at how much better it will spool and better intake temps mean you will have full boost 10lbs maybe 11lbs. I run cats and I make like 300 at 15lbs to the floor
