This one doesn't really need explaining, does it? Hamlet contemplates suicide. (This clip is property of the BBC, if you couldn't tell by the watermark on David Tennant's forehead. Good luck ignoring that now.)
Hamlet (Rosencrantz and Gildenstern)

Rosencrantz and Gildenstern have arrived at Elsinore Castle by request of the king, Hamlet's uncle, to watch over Hamlet and see if they an get to the bottom of his "madness". Hamlet has put on the mad act to get closer to finding out the truth of whether his uncle really killed his father. Here, Hamlet is realizing that his friends have been sent to spy on him, and explains to them his current...

Tennant sold this performance for me. His acting capacities portrayed Hamlet as he was written: a man in mourning pretending to be insane. Most actors who portray Hamlet do so with far too much solemnity. Tennant puts the humanity and insanity back into the character!

I think the scene could have been stronger if Rosencrantz & Guildernstern & Polonius were allowed to be strong - instead of just making them stooges for Hamlet's jokes, that he can do & say anything he wants. It becomes tiresome.

    • @justaboutnothing4500

While I don't disagree that the comedy in this part isn't very funny, this scene does follow the text. I was checking the text as they went along cause I read your comment and thought "that's not the way I remember it" but it's the full Shakespeare.

Shakespeare didn't write Rosencrantz & Guildenstern as strong characters - they are ineffectual and pretty much their sole function, outside of the plot, is to be the butt of Hamlet's jokes. You can't blame the director or actors for this, it's Shakespeare's fault.

@DavidTennantsLover7 : he did some lines, i noticed that and went back to the script of the play and saw the lines that he skipped. Mayb the director felt those lines skipped were not too important to the overall effect of gloom and doom portrayed in Hamlet's soliloquy. Or maybe they skipped it, because it's so freaking long (trying to save time, wouldn't blame them). Still a very emotional speech though

Reminds me of when we had to recite Lincoln's Gettysburg address. Rush through before you forget it all without really considering what it means. I hope any future performances David does with RSC are also produced for film. Shakespeare has always been my favorite. David Tennant just makes it better.
