If Grayson is treated fairly he should be found not guilty. 1) The pot had steaming contents. Officer Grayson, had no evidence that it wasn't something worse than "mere" water. 2) No one is saying that boiling water is a crime, but reasonable people KNOW that boiling water can easily result in painful life altering and potentially mortal wounds. Sugar water or oil can reach even higher temperatures than "mere" water. Legally, an attack of this sort is considered Deadly Force. Thus, a deadly force response is consistent with the proportionality requirement of self-defense. Do you know what the Five Elements of Self-Defense are? 3) Sonya's passing is tragic. What is even more tragic is the abandonment of the principles of self-defense. If humanity ditches the tenets of self-defense, it will be bad. The sanctity of life is so profound that civilization supports principles of self-defense -- even to the point of lethal violence. From the very moment that Sonya telegraphed intent to do harm up until she started to throw the pot, there wasn't anything that the officers could do that would not have put them in more jeopardy than that which they did. Trying to flee from the boiling liquid or using less than lethal force would have left them more vulnerable to her attack. There is no reason they should put up with a boiling liquid attack! 4) Video Has Not Been Refuted: Grayson's body camera footage shows Sonya throwing boiling liquid at the officers. No critic of Officer Grayson has been able to refute that. Since you haven’t addressed it, you implicitly concede the point. And if you concede that, then Officer Grayson’s claim of proportionate response to a deadly threat remains unchallenged. To see Massey throwing the steaming liquid, ensure you are looking at Grayson's footage. Play the part right before the first shot at 0.25 speed. 5) The Prosecutor Has The Burden of Proof: Does Grayson's legal team have to prove that the shooting was legal self-defense? No! Of course not! The burden of proof is on the prosecutor. The prosecutor is tasked with poking a hole in one or more of the Five Elements of Self-Defense. The video footage does not help the prosecutor poke a hole in any of the Five Elements. In fact, video footage reinforces each of the Five Elements! 6) Media outlets and most pundits-or wannabe pundits-completely ignore key evidence in this case. They overlook the fact that the pot was prepared as a weapon: it contained no spaghetti, and it was intentionally prepared while officers were en route or waiting to be admitted. They disregard how Massey telegraphed her intent to do harm through her body positioning, adjusting her grip and turning towards the officer with a baleful expression accompanied by her rebuking statement. Remember, they explained to her why they were worried, and instead of becoming less threatening, she doubled down by giving a baleful stare and repeating her rebuking statement. Even after that, they didn't pull the trigger. They waited until she was in the very act of hurling the contents of the pot over her head. 7) Also, please recall that the mere perception of a threat by an officer, as long as it falls within the realm of reasonableness, would justify the officer in displaying a show of force. Don't disregard the reality that boiling liquid can cause mortal harm and that, in such small quarters, the officers were in imminent danger of her throwing it. And, most importantly, she actually threw it! 8) The media, uninterested in these critical facts, focus solely on framing this incident to support their narrative that minorities are systematically abused by police. This perspective is fundamentally misleading, as evidenced by the following statistic: "A police officer is 18½ times more likely to be killed by a Black male than an unarmed Black male is to be killed by a police officer." This statistic, by the way, is part of a broader argument refuting the idea of systemic racial bias in policing. - which is something the media never wants to talk about. 9) In conclusion, she initiated threatening behavior AND the use of Deadly Force. Thus, the use of Deadly Force against her satisfies ALL Five of Elements of Self-Defense. Do you really want to live in a world where our men in blue need to absorb a boiling liquid attack without giving them the option to defend themselves? Remember, the attack did not occur in a wide open space, but in a space where retreat was not their safest option. All Sonya had to do was turn off the stove without picking up the pot! Not only did she pick it up, but she moved it to the closest part of the counter that she could. She then telegraphed intent to throw it. The officers told her to put it down -- and she did, so that would have been the end of it, and she would have lived. However, something went wrong in her head, and she picked up the pot again. She raised it above her head abruptly and hurled the contents towards the officers. If she had not done that, she would still be living, but she chose to throw it! In my community, it would be a foregone conclusion that one's life would be forfeit if they attacked the police as Sonya did. There seems to be something about Sonya's community that expects an unreasonable amount of grace for them.
