The main point of the electoral college is to force the federal government to acknowledge the concerns of low population states that could essentially be ignored in a purely popular vote system America is vast and different regions typically have different needs so a higher emphasis is put on achieving state recognition

We in Switzerland have a similar system when we vote and it isn't stupid, It bings the power in check, that all regions and peoples have something to say in the country, when this system isn't there 4-5 Staats / in Switzerland Kantone could rule over the country and 19-20 smaller populated Kantone could not do anything. Or bring me a more morden system who doesn't favor the urban places.

To explain the electoral college a bit more: Each state two senators and then 435 representatives are divided among the states based on population, with a minimum of one. Each state then gets a number of electors equal to the sum of its senators and representatives, for a minimum of three per state. The District of Columbia gets the same as the smallest state, so also three. Each then gets to decide how to allocate their electors. They figured out a long time ago that they boost the influence of their own state my make it all or nothing, so almost all states allocate all electors to whoever gets the most votes in that state. This is has the side effect of reducing the impact of more politically extreme states in favor of more moderate states. That's why everybody's focused on the seven battleground states. It's best not to fall into the trap of thinking "I don't immediately understand this, so it must be stupid."
