My recommendation is to cut your losses and get out of Physical Therapy. The profession sucks and the APTA is a useless organization. The APTA pushed for the doctorate degree when salaries did not warrant the expansion. There are many ways to make a living that are just as rewarding if not more.

That's not it at all. PT here 23 years in and largely 80% out now. The physical therapy profession is completely morally bankrupt. Most PTs see multiple patients at a time. Which means they are charlatans--period. If you have been doing this your entire career then you have no skills. Every therapist who engages in this unethical conduct is enraged with this comment. Every therapist seeing patients one on one knows I'm exactly right. And secondly, most therapists don't have the ethics to refuse to continue to see patients with chronic pain who can't get better due to their poor lifestyle. And that is becoming the majority of pts in today's entitlement driven world. PTs are weak knee'd and afraid to tell doctors they are overridding inappropriate orders that try to enforce continuous PT. I've have fought this nonsense since day one. Most of you didn't--on either point. The fact is your profession is largely a sham now and most of you continue to serve this sham which is making you miserable. And most of you deserve to be miserable for your lack of guts and ethics. Plain and simple.

Unless reimbursements rise significantly and then subsequently updates annually in lockstep with inflation (like Social Security payouts increasing every year), I don't think this career has much of a future.

I have no idea how things will improve. Unionize and strike for better reimbursement? No idea really.

You have to look at your debt load too. In that sense, nursing makes more sense economically. Realistically, nursing are making closer to $100k if not more (we're talking new nurses). So it's feasible for a nurse to pay off her debt with her nursing salary. PT on the other hand...? Requiring a Doctorate was a big mistake... big big mistake. I find it hard to believe that they make better physical therapists because of it.

Yeah, the PT profession sucks. The APTA is a self serving useless organization and does very little to protect the profession. Furthermore, PT is the weakest doctorate level degree one can get as the reward at the end is not worth the school investment. The best thing I ever did was get my prerequisites done and apply to medical school. Now I am very happy going to work everyday.

Starting new job in 2 hrs... Ive always ONLY had in home health jobs. Never a job, like, AT a place... Always on my own timeframe essentially.... Im freaking out. I haven't worked in 15 years. Taking care if my mother who needed constant care. Unpaid obviously. Because she had severe mental health issues and couldn't have strangers come in, so she lived with me. She took her life almost a year ago... Now idk how to function in the world. She was my priority always... My husband hired me. And i can't really do anything. The people there are going to lose patience. Im so insanely terrified.

I went to physical therapy, been in and out for various things since I was 12. I've done the exercises, gone to all of my appointments, and it simply didn't help. For people recovering from an injury, it's fantastic, but for people like me with chronic pain and joint issues, it just doesn't seem to do anything. We can strengthen my muscles all day long, they still aren't magically keeping my joints in place. I wish PT wasn't such an insurance go-to so PTs wouldn't be overburdened and stuck with people they cannot help.
