how would you emulate the air brush effect of the third step (applying the color) to someone without an air brush? would you just use a dry brush? fairly new to the hobby and i still have rattle cans and really dont want to commit to an air brush just yet. the layer you put on them seems so neat and thin and i doubt i could get anywhere close drybrushing it on. any tips would be great

Really enjoyed this! I liked a few of the tips. One, the color selection was superb. I just did the same Terminator armor range in Macragge Blue and they just don’t pop like yours. Next, I love the idea of using the brush versus the standard spine for weathering. Like you mentioned, sponge can get very busy. Thanks again.

I Agree with most points, but not using a wet palette? Nah absolutely no need not too. It’s not a good example of a Labour saving device making you a worse painter.. like saying “Carrying a rucksack will make you a better sprinter” learn to use it and it’s an excellent tool. As for practice? In every single sport and discipline practice makes you better, especially if you have a good foundation and painting minis is no different. Not sure whether you said those things for algorithm sakes. Thought provoking video which I enjoyed none the less.

Interesting about the wet pallet, I moved to a ceramic tile about 6 months ago and I feel far more comfortable with it, I have control that I didn’t have before. Nice video mate

Great way to do Death Guard as well. I would also use the airbrush (like you did) to sketch out the highlights and us that as a map for the stippling step that comes after. Maybe also using the airbrush later to enhance the shadows.

Then maybe touch up any oversized blobs of rhinox hide with whatever silver your highlighting with, or whatever you did any steel parts of the armor with but without any shading. Also does it work to just do the orange shading before you lay down your base yellow and smooth out the transitions in the process?

Really don't like the helmet on this terminator chaplain lol. They really designed it derpy asf lol. Cool conversion though, I learned a few tricks anyway, cheers.

That’s awesome I bought the starter set last year when I got into the hobby and have had one of these captains half painted on my desk for the last month the only thing stopping me from finishing it is the base I might cover up the dead tyranid with miliput to make it better fit the theme for the rest of my army but you’ve made me want to pick up another one off eBay and play around with converting it

Very nice looking. For the eyes I know there not cannon but I've seen someone do Tyranid eyes just black, and then after the whole model got a matt or satin varnish they went back and painted the eyes with a gloss varnish and it just looked creepy. I think that could look very cool and very intimidating for space marines, especially terminators. Alternatively paint them black and then do little white lines(like a reverse purity seal) and then hit them with a very bright(maybe florescent) ink and then finish the eyes with a gloss to make them look like CRT's.

Balancing between readability at a distance and looking good up close has been so difficult to wrap my head around as a new painter. I also don't like using pure black or pure white because what it adds in readability it takes away in terms of realism up close IMHO. But the darker spots inside the biggest scratches sounds like a win win to me. Looking forward to trying out these techniques. Thanks!

That Cyan from S75 ink reminds me of one of the GW contrast, tho I cannot pinpoint which one exacly. Talassar blue perhaps is closest match?

Really cannot be understated how lifestyle impacts hand shake. When I was meditating, doing yoga and generally living "well" I had absolutely 0 hand shake, at any time. My nervous system was completely settled. Currently my sleeping pattern is off kilter, too much screen time and my diet is not ideal. Hands shake all the time. Coffee as well, is bad for hand shake (generally).

Would this technique work for more earthy colored Terminators and Space Marines?

10:11 by one part pain/one part flow improver/one part water, do you mean equal parts of each? Do you dilute the flow improver at all, or is it straight? Also, what PSI do you use with this mix? Thanks, it came out awesome!

The decals aren't shaded to match the shoulder pauldrons though. They're floating on top of the paint scheme. I don't get why painters don't blend the decals in. Looks proper weird.

Great video but I found it difficult to follow the visuals because the white background created so much contrast with the mini that I couldn’t see any detail.
