The Cabinet of Dr Caligari: Analysis of Film Form, Aesthetics and Context
The Cabinet of Dr Caligari was a huge international hit on release in 1920. For the post-war German film industry facing a hostile international market, this was a huge commercial achievement and led to a decade of innovation and creativity in Weimar cinema. A huge influence on both the art film and the horror genre, Caligari is a tangle of contradictions: a blockbuster that became an essential text in the history of cinema.

Vivre sa Vie is one of the greatest films by Jean-Luc Godard and an important example of French New Wave Cinema. In this film, Godard owes another director a huge debt: Carl Theodor Dreyer. Vivre sa Vie includes both a direct reference to Dreyer's Passion of Joan of Arc in its most famous scene and borrows more generally from its singular style. You can find a more detailed analysis of Dreyer's...

Jonathan Glazer's Under the Skin is rightly hailed as a masterpiece of British cinema. As the title implies, it is a film that plays with surface and depth and rewards many repeated viewings. This analysis applies Barbara Creed's critical framework of the monstrous feminine and is therefore a companion piece with this channel's analysis of Sightseers: ua-cam.com/video/ARoP7bpfihA/v-deo.html
Sightseers Close Analysis

Two campers on a murder spree. Sightseers is a bizarre 2012 comedy that is distinctly British in tone. Written by the lead performers Alice Lowe and Steve Oram and directed by the singular Ben Wheatley, Sightseers taps into the frustrations, repression and violence that lurks beneath the class system. It only takes a few days in a caravan exploring the sites of old, weird Britain to let the dar...

Alexander Dovzhenko's 1930 film Earth (Zemlya) is the third of his Ukraine trilogy, following on from the singular Arsenal (1929). Earth is an extraordinary hymn to the land and nature and Dovzhenko crafts a strange beauty from what should be a simple propaganda film about collective farming. Earth marks the end of the great period of Soviet Montage cinema.

Alexander Nevsky: Analysis of Film Form, Auteur Characteristics and Context

After nine years of failed projects and artistic frustration, Sergei Eisenstein managed to complete Alexander Nevsky in 1938. While less radical in its form than the giddy rush of films Eisenstein produced in the 1920s, Nevsky's great battle sequence has influenced just about every war film ever since and the singular approach to the art of editing is still in evidence. As a snapshot of Soviet ...

Tokyo Story: Analysis of Film Form, Auteur Characteristics and Context

A close analysis of Ozu's Tokyo Story, one of the greatest films of the twentieth century. Generally considered to be 'characteristically Japanese', the film's emotional resonance is universal. This analysis is particularly grateful to Adam Mars-Jones' excellent 2011 book, Noriko Smiling. Also, apologies for any errors in my pronunciation of Japanese words.
