Waiata sung with passion strengthens the development of te reo Māori. Gesture, movement, and facial expression are all helpful hooks for memorising language. Look to include waiata from local iwi and whānau when you do this. Waiata that repeat sounds and actions are particularly good for building te reo Māori vocabulary. Use well known songs to:
introduce concepts of loud, quiet, slow, fast, high, low pause and wait for children to finish a word or line practise and enjoy imitation and turn-taking encourage children to lead singing sessions.
Compose songs with tamariki and whānau to share experiences, tell stories, and support transitions and daily rituals. You could borrow an existing rangi/tune, pātere/chant, oriori/lullaby, or make up your own. When introducing songs talk about new vocabulary and use these words outside of the song. (Te Whāriki 2017)

Now that brings back memories 👍 Cheers for that.
Tēnā koutou You should, out of respect for the composers, acknowledge them when reproducing their waiata.
I just noticed the colours of the rainbow on your tee-shirt. Ka pai.
Kia ora Maria, Pakeha here. Thankyou so much for singing and playing this waiata. Your beautiful voice must be such a beautiful gift for everyone around you. I have always wondered what the words meant. Thankyou!!

I've been looking for this song for years... I heard it way back in 2017
My primary school Māori teacher sung the 2nd one to us and I've been trying to find it to show my little brother, thank you!!

Beautifully played, I loved this song as a 7 year old who’d just arrived in NZ with a “funny accent”. I remember so much detail , including walking around in bare feet, Ti Rakau & Poi Songs.
Awesome but is there a reason you pronounce “Pūngawerewere” like pōngawerewere?
I was thinking the same thing . Love the waiata though!
I hear it pronounced as Pū!
so beautiful, a lovely song sung beautifully that my daughter is very fond of singing at Northland Kindy :) Thank you ladies! ❤
That's great, thanks so much for commenting, we love getting feedback :)
Do you have the music sheet for this song ?
Kia Ora Samuel, we do have a music book available to purchase on our website: elp.co.nz/product/ukulele-waiata-for-beginners/
Love your version, just listened to a couple of really bad versions where they dont pronounce ‘koe’ properly.
Love your songs. I enjoy singing with my daughter who is 17 months. Her favorite is pungawerawera. Love from South Taranaki.
That is awesome!
We love these waiata at our centre! Thank you for posting.

Nawww ataahua!! Thank you for sharing this with us!! We hope you enjoy the rest of the waiata in the series ☺️
Kia ora Kōrua! I was just wondering do you have a chord for this waiata?
Looks like c and g

Thanks for sharing!
Most welcome! ☺️
Thank you Wendy, always inspiring
hello! ive watched and listened a few times now, and i have a question - at the end around the 30 minute mark, Wendy Lee mentions the change based around the image of the child. from deficit to credit , strength based assessment. can i ask, what cause this change? was there a change in government policy? why? an early reggio emilia contact? i would be grateful if someone could offer this information. thank you!
Yay good job
Thanks
