Set up toggles, mix & match outfits with Smart Control | Dressing Tools 2.2 Tutorial
Dressing Tools 2.2 is out - now with a new system called Smart Control. With Smart Controls, you can set up menus, toggles, and radial sliders. You will need basic knowledge of creating VRChat Avatars in Unity and using the Creator Companion. This isn't endorsed or anything, just thought it would help folks! I tried adding some editing, but this is not my wheelhouse so thank you for understanding.
For a basic tutorial on the Cabinet System, please see my older video! (ua-cam.com/video/XeoRxdCxGsI/v-deo.html&t)

You will need basic knowledge of Unity and VRChat Avatar Creation for this tutorial. I'm not a videographer or anything, just thought this may be helpful to some! This is all one take so pardon any rambling. Great tutorial, this resolves several problems I've had with outfits for Rindo
Hello, i am not sure, if u gonna read that.. but i got a problem that, when i tried it, everything looked normal, but when i tried to activate my cloth it got stuck in a T-Pose, but avatar is in his A-Pose.. Could u possibly help me?
Is it possible to toggle hairstyles ? I can't figure out how to make a brand new cabinet
well Ive got in an errors that it could not locate target armature thought itve already in it, can u help me pls
having a small issue, all things line up but the shoes and socks, in the scene its lined up but once play mode is hit they arent aligned anymore
Hmm I'd double check the Mapping. In the Wearable menu make sure "Mapping" is highlighted to show the mapping options and click "View/Edit Mappings" - see if anything on the left side (avatar's bones) isn't matching with the right side (wearable bones). If something doesn't match, you can switch the mode from Auto to Override and then click the "+" sign to manually map certain wearable bones to avi bones. Not sure if that's your issue, just a guess!
Great tutorial! Is there a way to make every single part of the outfit a toggle? So that I can mix & match outfits anytime while in VRChat
quick question, if you wanted to make the avatar a little more optimized and get rid of things like the default outfit and hair and stuff could you just delete it before adding all the outfits and hairs you do want to keep?
You can def delete the default stuff you don't want, just make sure you have a new "default"/baseline so that way ur avi isn't nakey.
How do you add a custom thumbnail?
Does this work with a model? that would be used to, vsee face (streaming)
You can do it where you totally dress a model then convert to vrm, but it can be very finnicky in my experience - not the dressing so much as the conversion part. Using the "legacy" tool functionality (quick dress) will help you set the model up so you can convert it.
💓
Thank you for the tutorial, really helpful!
Can you make a video on how to rig outfits that are different from the base?
you helped me out so much, tho I have an issue of my chest coming through the top but I think thats a skill issue!
Not a skill issue, overall issue.
I know it's a stupid question but I'm gonna ask to make sure and not waste my time... Is it possible to make the hair, eyes textures etc change along with the outfit? (Also awesome video, saved me lots of time keep it up. Subbed as well ^^) Edit: Just realized that the video was 5 months ago... :(
i followed this and the shoes are still not attached
If u add clothing that isnt rigged to the body through blender or unity if it fits the model then it wont be attached even with this addon, this dresser tool only allows to work with rigged clothing already
i keep getting errors all the TIME i followed it step by step and it does not work i keep getting the one where you try to add to cabinet and the one where i test it in gesturemanager for the add one it says that there is missing scrips in my outfit that i want to put on and i know it doesnt and the other one says the same thing idk what im doing wrong
i keep getting an error saying source armature has to be inside the avatar
Same
likewise
Me too :( any fix/solution yet?
I need some help i'm using the same model but there's clipping in the chest with infos saying: Using IgnoreTransform for frankenstein bone
Thanks for the tutorial! Have referenced it a few times now and it has been a great help.
Am I the only one who can't get Blendshape Sync to work? Like, I did everything the same way you did but it just won't Sync the blendshapes. What's the issue?
It's hard to say without seeing your unity! I'd recommend asking in poi's discord. I do see that there was recently an update, so make sure you go to your Creator Companion > Manage Project, and make sure all the versions are up to date. Edit: I haven't experienced issues lately myself
This video was very helpful, thanks a lot for explaining!
How do i change the texture or material color of for example the pants from the smart control?
So as of the time of my reply here, that's not a capability of the Smart control; however, the dev poi said they're working on it and it will probably be available in 2.5/2.6 version
Is it possible to make a toggle for each parts so that i can for example use parts from different clothes?
Do you have discord, I need ur help so much (and no Im not a kid)
Very helpful ♥
Definitely earned my sub! Showcasing in a clear, confident voice, knowledgeable way of explaining what goes on in the background and smooth flow of working step by step through the tool. You're awesome!!
Also you mentioned in your other video that you can add outfits for other models onto any model? are you going to do a video on that?
Def wanna do more advanced stuff down the line! No ETA on that yet though, so thanks for understanding
Love me some prefags <3 Also tysm for the video!
can you make the advance version
I'll work on it! 2.2 is out now, so I'm probably gonna be making updated ones :)

Awesome tutorial <3 instant sub!
Please keep doing tutorials, this was great
Useful ♥
Can I export to blender?
I'm not sure if you have come across this issue yet, but when I would create multiple cabinet's and start adjusting the blendshapes as normal. My pc fan would start to speed up and then after clicking a body part in blendshapes it would crash unity. It would do this with random outfits also. Like its picking and choosing lol T-T Anyway I did contact the discord owner about this but they could only try to recreate the issue and see whats wrong. So far since still no fix. My personal theory is because of all the full sets of armature, it boosts the total bone count up. As the bones would still be there even after the cabinet was created for me. (Not sure if that was normal) maybe making it unoptimized causing the crash? Idk thats my only theory but let me know 🥹🥲
Honestly, yeah. I haven't had this issue, but I have a pretty good CPU, and I suspect the load of building may be causing that >_<. In terms of optimizing, I'd def reach out to the dev on tips/feedback regarding making it less chonky.
*promosm*
I probably missed something in the video, but for some reason, whenever I test it in gesture manager, the outfit I put on my booth model does not get toggled off after I have toggled it on, or when I try to toggle the original outfit on (I also turned all of the Write Defaults on aswell). And also, Im kinda curious on how to just make it so I can toggle off specific parts of the main outfit off, say a Scarf on a winter outfit of my model.
In my experience, this is due to Write Defaults issues. Definitely triple check! Also, make sure everything's up to date. If it's still making your head scratch you can ask the discord, they're super helpful! As for toggling off "specific parts" of the main outfit, you can do that with customizables - say, call it "Scarf Only" - and toggle off the main outfit parts for the customizable. If you want to mix and match different parts of different outfits with the cabinet (say, a top from one outfit and a skirt from a different one), that's not available with this tool yet, but poi (the creator) said it's something they're working on.
This is a great video! Thank you for the tutorial Just wanted to ask, is this tool also possible to use for hair swap for booth models?
I haven't used it for hair personally, but if you wanted to, you'd follow the steps for "setup accessories or others" in the documentation (dressingtools.chocopoi.com/docs/getting-started/setup-accessories). Maybe I can record this in the future, too
