      Hi Syed. Let me first thank you for your kind words. It makes me really happy to hear that you found my videos useful. Now, I will end up doing a video like that, but I don't have a time line on that. I can though give you some information based on my experience and journey in the Power BI world, without pretending it will be the absolute truth :). Responsibies, or more like a system that I use: 1. Liase with the stakeholders to udnerstand the businisses requirements. (at this step I usually define the important KPIs and a rought structure of the report) 2. Data gathering and transformation (for me it mostly means writing SQL queries that I then import in Power BI). Since I write my custom queries the data transformation in Power BI is minimal for me. 3. Report development (writing DAX, creating visualisations, filters pages, etc.) 4. Data analysis (it is happening pretty much at the same time with the previous step as they are strongly related) 5. Report testing (this is the bit I give most of my time, because here is where I make sure that the reports are accurate, especially when I have to connect two different databases - SQL and Oracle in my case) 6. User training (I cannont expect that the final user will have my knowledge on Power BI and they do need all the help they can get. The whole point is for them to use the report, not just have it there for fun). 7. Support and Administration ( any suport reuqired from users and administration of the Power BI Wev service) Skills: 1. Data modelling (You need to understand very well a data model, how it works and how to use it. A good data model give you accurate information and excellent performance) 2. DAX and M language (This is another very important aspect. You need to understand the logic of DAX and how to build measure. The M language can be learned a bit later) 3. SQL (You don't need to be an expert. You could even get by without any knowledge, but I can guarantee it would help to be confident in SQL) 4. MS Office 365 (You will end up connecting your report in various way with all of the components of the MS Office and you need to have good knoledge of all) 5. Any other expierience in Azure, Power Pivot, Power Query, Data warehousing would be very beneficial. And of course you need the soft skills: communication, creativity, negotiation, critical and analytical thinking and so on. Bear in mind this list could go on, and on, but this it what I can think of based on my role and my experience.

    Very Practical. So before we are told that it depends, from a practical point of view assuming the same data tables and same level of opmimization techniques employed for all the three, which one would you generally recommend.. Time is expensive so i would not not like to do thre designs test them and choose the best especially that as we increase the number of records results may be surprising..

    • @MMS-PowerBI
      @MMS-PowerBI 23 дні тому

      For the company that I work for, I mostly have to go with a snowflake design just because of the sheer volume of data. If I would recommend any of them, it would be in this order: 1. Star Schema 2. Snowflake Schema 3. Flat File (for 1 page dashboard style, small dataset, and it's needed very, very quick without emphasis on accuracy)

      @@MMS-PowerBI thank you so much. i wish i could show you an image i have a table with several columns that contain the same type of information. I want to merge all columns in one but without merging rows, keeping them individual. When i merge columns, each row from all columns merges too, and i want to keep each row individual. Let's say stacked instead of merged all together. My final objective is to be able to do group by count and get how many records of each distinct type i have, but if i merge columns it doesn't leave the rows individual and it can not count properly.

    Thank you, Stelian. This is really useful. I often work with huge files with 5m rows - download.companieshouse.gov.uk/en_output.html, but I rarely get a file with values together with their ID. This file has several of those - Company name and ID, Position and ID, Department and ID. etc. Why not just remove all the ID columns and work with a single Fact Table?? What am I missing here??? Thanks again.

    • @MMS-PowerBI
      @MMS-PowerBI 2 місяці тому

      Hi Robert, The name of the game is performance. And here is how the type of data model might affect it: 1. The size of date model. The larger the size, the worse the performance becomes. It is a good practice for example that in the fact table to keep only events (dates, numbers) and NO descriptions. Just by splitting it into a fact table and dimensions table you could reduce the size of data model considerabely. 2. A flat file (normalized) might work if it has a low amount of rows. When you are talking about millions of rows, as soon as you DAX calculations will get a bit more complicated, the query response time will go through the roof. And we all know is nothing worse than waiting more than 2-3 seconds (and that's very generous) to have a report refreshed. I hope this helps you a little bit.

  • @saltyashiful

    When creating a dimension table, can I use references instead of duplicates? What is the difference between the two methods?

    • @MMS-PowerBI
      @MMS-PowerBI 3 місяці тому

      In theory both duplicate and reference will give you a copy of the initial query, but.... There is a but :) With duplicate when you change/modify the initial query, the copy will not be affected. Whatever steps you make in the fact table, they will not be reflected in the dimension table. With reference on the other hand, any changes you make to the initial query will be reflected in the copy. For example, if you use reference to create the parts dimension and then in the fact table you remove the part description column, then the description column will be removed in the dimension table as well. I hope this answer you question. If if you have any more question please give me a shout. I'll be more than happy to help.

      @MMS-PowerBI 3 місяці тому

      Youre welcome. In theory snowflake schema can be denormalized into a star schema. But sometimes, if you have loads of data, it's advisable to normalize the star schema into a snoflake schema, depending on what type of granularity you need to achieve.

    Thank you very much for the tutotrial. One of the first i don't have to accelerate X2 to follow :-). There's step I don't understand well is about value replacement. If you replace departement ID (so secondary key) how the ID HRFM, HRFH ... will link with the DimEmployee table, as the primary keys have not changed...

      I am happy you found the tutorial useful and that it has the right speed. I try to stay more to the point, than go around the bushes for nor reason :). Now, related to you question, first of all well spotted. I have tried to add that step more like a how to do it. In real life this would create a blank result and all sort of issues. The solution is to make the replacements in the original table or file, before duplicating, and then both the employees table and the department id table would have the same IDs.

    Very nice explanations. I notice that when you filter for dates only in 2023, you used "is after 01/01/2023", which is distinct from the usual "is on or after 01/01/2023" that you might use in Powerbi to include the first date of the year. Does the method you used here accidentally exclude the date 01/01/2023? If so, then "is after 12/31/2022" would have to be used, or perhaps an adjustment in M to "[PROCDATE] >= #datetime(...". Thanks for any clarification. I look forward to watching more from you.

      @kevinhung-liang Thank you for your kind comment. Regarding the date filtering you are correct in saying that on an "official" project the way to use filtering is "on and after". At the company I work for we use SQL and Oracle databases and I always export my data already cleaned and I always filter data as either "<=", either ">=". In Power BI, for both M language and DAX the syntax should be the same. On a separate note, if there is anything specific that you would want me to shoot a video of, just let me know. Thank you for sacrificing your time to watch the video. It is highly appreciated 👏

    Nice Video! Do you have a video where you load this dataset into PowerBI, transform it and build the measures? That would be very helpful! Keep up the good work 👍

      Thank you for your reply. I hope next Monday I'll be able to upload a video with the process of cleaning the data and creating the data model. After that, we'll transform the report using measures.

    I have recently solved many FAANG SQL interview questions from stratascratch through Power Query and it was such a fun. I love Power BI.

      It's good to hear that! 😊 Power Query might seem complicated, but it's not that bad.
