I am going to be documenting the installation of my HAM shack in my basement office - along with providing radio reviews of my equipment (including transceivers, accessories, cables, power supplies, etc.) This will include any builds and Raspberry Pi videos.
Additionally, I have backyard chickens in a suburban residential area. I will be documenting the build of my chicken coop, duck coop, and run areas. As well as providing advice and feedback, I will also be seeking advice. Please feel free to comment on my videos. While I will never ask people to like and subscribe, it will help provide additional income for materials to build my coop - as funds are tight at the moment.

Discussion of 10 meter band
Issues with the 10-meter band in late 2024. The band seems to be winding down with less traffic than earlier in the year. Now winter is here, it seems that there are quite a bit fewer people on the band.
I am soon going to get a 10-meter radio shack radio to see if if that makes a difference.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Chicken Run (coop)
Переглядів 1021 день тому
I am still in the process of building my chicken run - meaning I still have to install the gate. The current makeshift gate is becoming irritating, so I'm going to have to install the post supports for a gate frame. You can purchase the netting I'm going to use on Amazon at the following site: www.amazon.com/dp/B078YQ3HRJ
Is one or both of my bantam chickens roosters?
Переглядів 614 місяці тому
I'm still in the process of finishing the run for my chickens - hence there being stuff everywhere. My wife and I are pretty sure the bantam chicken with the red comb is a rooster. But is the other one? We don't know enough about bantam chickens to identify them. They are getting a bit on the aggressive side towards the Easter Egger ("Rosie"). We bought them as "Straight run - mixed bantams". L...
My first Balun/Unun build
Переглядів 339 місяців тому
This is my first attempt at building an Unun/Balun for my End-Fed Half-Wave antenna. The parts cost me around $60 to build this 49:1 unun from scratch. Scroll down for an itemized list. The quality of the wire and unun both were pretty junky 18 gauge speaker wire, a single FT-140-43 ferrite core for the toroid, some thin enameled magnet wire...this would not do! So, because I do not have a ton ...

Basement Office Shack v2.0 -
Переглядів 6010 місяців тому
As a new ham, it can be a challenge setting up your shack - especially if it is a basement. This is the latest update of my basement office shack. I forgot to show my (temporary) grounding setup that I'm currently using, which I'll show in my next video. I want to give thanks to all the Elmer's who have provided their help to me, including W8CT, N8BOB, N8DDA, and W8UPB. #hamradio #antennahack #...
10 meter, $10 dipole ham radio antenna
Переглядів 2411 місяців тому
This design was originally made by Mike (K8MRD) of @hamradiotube . I used a tool/tackle box space divider from Harbor Freight instead of a cutting board. The 20'ft mast is about 35 years old and was from Pell's Radio in Cadillac, MI. I still have yet to install an entry/junction box on the side of my house, as well as a ground rod. Right now, I have my Yaesu FTDX-1200 grounded to a cold water p...
My 15 - 10 Meter Dipole Antenna for about $10
Переглядів 9111 місяців тому
I would like to thank Mike D. - a couple of thick PVC rings, cut off from a length of 2" PVC pipe. My $10 Dipole 15m/10m antenna: I measured the wires to 12.5'ft per leg (I think I said different in the video. So according to the Dipole Calculator at: www.omnicalculator.com/physics/dipole it should work on either 10m or 15m if you adjust the lengths accordingly. Though i wanted a 10m antenna ( ...
KE8ZSZ Rview of the Raspberry Pi 7" Touchscreen and CanaKit Pi Zero W 2 Package
Переглядів 10111 місяців тому
This is a quick review of the Raspberry Pi zero W 2 Cana Kit package and the raspberry Pi 7 inch touch screen, which I purchased for $49.99 on Amazon. the screen is great if you want to set up a pi zero quickly so you can set the SSH settings quickly - that way you can lose the keyboard, mouse, and touch screen and get working on your projects. (link soon to come) (FYI: I am not supported by th...

The NESDr SMArt, by Nooelec ranges in receiving frequencies from 100kHz - 1.75GHz (up to 2.2GHz with an high-pass filter). You get the full waterfall effect with most available SDR software - or you can use it in combination with a decoder for digital modes to decode FT8, PSK31, DMR, and I believe there are even some apps to decode Fusion C4FM and some other proprietary digital formats. With tw...
Review of the TYT TH-9800 Quad-Band Transceiver

I am doing a very general, basic review of the TH-9800 model quad-band Transceiver by TYT. I am very happy with this radio and am using it as the primary radio in my Shack, as I primarily talk on 2m (local and state repeaters) while I study for my general exam. if you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comment section. Thanks for watching. #hamradio #tyt #th9800 #radio #antennas #trans...

Building a HAM shack into my basement office
Переглядів 32Рік тому
Having passed my radio technician licensure exam about a month ago, I finally received my ticket right before Christmas. now, as KE8ZSZ, I want to build a HAM shack into my basement office. As I work from home, a home shack will allow me more time to learn about amateur radio. I'm just beginning getting my equipment and acquiring the parts and equipment for my shack. I am learning a lot about t...
That dongle does not last very long mine burned out You cannot leave it plugged in I had two of them and both did not last over 2 weeks
Hi not me don't like ft8 or ant over digital mode
Hey Mike, it's solar activity that is causing the 10m up and downs. Conditions will get back to normal within a few days.
Very Cool Mike. So, I've been a ham for 40 years. Been through 3 solar cycles and I can share from experience that 10M is a fantastic band at the height of the cycle. But signals will come and go day by day or even hour by hour, depending on the prevailing conditions. It's one of my favorite bands - you can talk around the world on 5 watts. You can hear one side of a conversation - only and or both sides and yet the participants can be hundreds of miles away. The Solar cycle will wind down over the next 3 years. You will see weeks where conditions are good and weeks where there's nothing. And Less and Less over the next 3-5 years. 5 Years from now 10 will be dead except for occasional E-Layer and or other exotic and rare propagation. Enjoy the fun on 10 because it won't be this good again for about 9 years.
It's conditions. hopefully get better when the days get longer
Why is your CLAR off +90Hz? Will not get many replies BTW I worked 10 and have over 300 QSO's over the last 2-3 weeks N3WER 73
More and more Hams are screwing around with FT-8 and no longer speaking into a microphone.
Wow you called it! It's a huge shame. I feel like so many important and fun things in life are lost these days.
It is Christmas time. Not many ppl. on the band. 11 meters is the same right now.
Yes there is that too!
10 meters is like that, many times you can tune down to 11 and it will be wall to wall with stations but you come back up to 10 and hear no one. The bands open but probably everyone is doing the same thing, tuning across the band just listening. 😀 Call CQ a bit, the stations are there, just like fishing, you got to wait for them to bite. Try going out to a park and do a POTA activation but be sure to put yourself on the spot page. You'll be surprised to see how open the band is. 73, KU4MP
10m is amazing! Making contacts around the world, Solar cycle shouldn’t wind down for another 3 or 4 years.
Strange, I made 15 overseas, 4 in South America, and a dozen around the US; from my QTH in Wisconsin on an FT-710 12-28-24, I run a custom full wave loop for 10m. KD9HCW

what size fuse do you have in there? I have a similar power supply only 1300 watts. TY
These guys are famous for having one side or the other fail within weeks or months of buying it.
I have the NESDr SMart dongle with the Noelec Ham it Up and an active loop antenna which works great. Only thing is, the dongle gets HOT! I mounted everything on a bit of pine board and screwed it to the wall with USB extensions to the computer. Running HDSDR and it, for the most part, does the job well...
Thank you so much!! ❤❤ I'm glad to know what kind of bantams we have! Much appreciated 😊😊
Hello, what you have are Golden Sebright Bantams. I used to have these years ago. You do have a rooster and the other one looks like a female.
Thank you so much! Unfortunately, it's difficult to purchase bantam chicks that are sexed already. I'm not good at sexing chicks through the vent method (especially if they are over a day old). I will soon be posting some incubation videos using a small 8 egg incubator (dome/saucer shaped).
Has the RX on left or right side failed yet?
Interested in getting this radio. If I can get 462.000 and 467.000 for emergency use. Is that possible
Nice job Mike
This Is Cool :)| Is It For CW Only?
Yes it is. Need a CW key and some headphones.
how far can i reach with the th-9800 using efhw antenna?
You probably don't need to use an EFHW antenna with this quad-band radio, or really any dual-band radio. If you're referring to 10 meters on FM, you're really not going to get very far with FM propagation - so an EFHW antenna wouldn't be the best option. I would go with a vertical 10-meter, or 10-meter j-pole made from a ladder line and 14 AWG stranded wire. It all depends on what bands you want to primarily be on. For all the bands, using an EFHW antenna, you'll probably want an antenna tuner that covers 10 meters through 70cm - which may be tricky to find. As far as distance, a 50W radio might get you a couple hundred miles of distance on 10 meters, but probably not much further, as you would want to use SSB (USB in particular) on 10 meters to get further than 200 miles. For 70cm, I found the best distance is usually with a directional beam, such as a 5-element yagi (can pick up one for $50 on Amazon). If you're outside, you can attach this radio to a battery and attach a 3 to 5-element yagi to a broom handle to jump onto some satellite repeaters and manually adjust the direction (the ISS for example). The 50 watts would give you some great power to be heard if done properly, with an amazing range (it's a satellite)!! So it all depends really. I've never used an EFHW antenna to get onto the satellite repeaters, so I'm not sure how well they will work, to be honest. I just don't know. If you can, then you could get hundreds, or a thousand miles of range potentially.
Power supplies typically test higher voltage when not under load. You'll often find it much closer once it's got a power draw.
Thank you for the tip! Much appreciated! I found out by using ferrite core RF chokes and ferrite beads, the noise level on my radio is unnoticeable. It's a feasible option for those looking to start out on a shoestring budget.
Thanks for sharing sir.
No problem. Thanks for watching :)
I've wondered about this radio. Thanks for the upload.
Thanks for watching :)
I need to legit build a shack on the top of my hill. Trying to find the cheapest way to do it.
