Recently, my Lenovo Ideapad 5, that I've used for the last four years or so, broke. Not any of the electronics, it still actually runs fine, no, what broke was the bracket which attaches the hinge to the case. Meaning, that I can't open the lid without putting massive strain on the screen. I was quite annoyed since Lenovo has a pretty good reputation for producing durable computers, there's a reason why the ThinkPad has been so popular for so long after all. Anyway, because of that I've been shopping around for a new laptop and I heard about Framework from a friend who's pretty in t he know about computers so I decided to do some research and the idea definitely appeals to me. While I do the vast majority of my GIS related work on my desktop, Map making, modelling, etc., I want a laptop for when I need to travel or go out to do field work. So, it needs to be fairly durable and able to handle light to medium workloads, as well as some light photo editing in Affinity Photo and a bit of light gaming. The entire sentiment around repairability and modularity especially appeals to me, it's one of the reason's I built my own work desktop, the ability to freely add, upgrade, or exchange components is very appealing. I also really like the idea behind their hot-swappable IO ports. Even if there are only 4 IOs on the Framework13, you have the option to buy more and freely exchange them. Like, if I'm out flying my drone at a worksite in the forest, I probably won't need an HDMI or Displayport out, so being able to swap for an extra USB-A or USB-C port is very nice. Anyway, I'm still probably going to be doing a bit more research before deciding, but thanks for giving your thoughts!

  • @WyvernDotRed

For now I am keeping my ageing ThinkPad e585 in use, as it still suffices. In a way it's neat how it's one of the first TPs with an AMD APU, but this also makes it quite slow, even running Linux (Garuda Linux, in case you're curious). I am preparing for making an upgrade soon, either to some other TP or a Framework 16. Next to being twice as expensive (but worthwhile in the long term), what makes me hesitant is that I don't think I would like the touchpad and keyboard. This as I am very accustomed to the ThinkPad style top buttons and heavier weighted keyboard keys, the Framework 13 of a friend I tried felt like a big downgrade. Which I can probably get past, but it still won't be as nice as another TP, like the one I helped my brother pick, which I am almost jealous of. But I'll have plenty of time to decide, as I've made the decision to start the next study year on my current laptop and to see how it holds up, now the programme will require heavier software.

I love everything about the framweork laptops, both of the models, but i have issues related to delivery and availability... for all North America based countries it's not an issue, as deliveries are fast, but for people like me who live un Latin America all deliveries are quite long, so in case of critical need for a replacement part it would take a very long time or too much price for express/priority shipping. Also there is the obvious issue of customs in Latin America countries, because it's recurrent that high value products get lost on customs or checkings.

There is some funny looking brackets in the packaging coming with the chassis. On the other hand, the PSU I have seems to be screwed on the chassis only from the outer side. I was wondering if the brackets provided with the chassis were meant to support the PSU weight somehow. My Supermicro chassis had provisions for screwing the PSU from the inside as well to support its weight. I can't figure out what these brackets that were provided were meant for.

@@RobertMizen No idea, I have a Supermicro PSU which is the correct size but it is a bit thinner. If the chassis is horizontal then the external screws can hold the PSU in place. If it was mounted sideways then I wouldn't want the static load to be left unsupported. However I couldn't find a permutation of brackets and positions that would work. Nevermind that. Now on with the challenge of plugging in the front panel connectors to the Supermicro motherboard. I guess this is the price to pay for not buying a Supermicro chassis where it just works but for crying out lout, they could had spliced the cables from the front panel to the motherboard completely so that they can move independently. Piss poor design.

@@nautaki some supermicro chassis can be little special. So yeah, but the front panel on this chassis is standard. I have a supermicro board in mine now and it fits

@@RobertMizen the problem I have is that the cables from the front panel to the motherboard are not independent. This makes it very hard to plug them to the correct connection on the motherboard. I had an idea though. Supermicro gives you an adapter for connecting third party motherboards to their chassis. I could use that instead. Hmmm......

Hey. I buy the 2013’13’ in 2015 and he’s dead a few days ago (keyboard and batterie). I change the batteries, keyboard and also trackpad and logic board to make it like a 2015 MacBook Pro A1502. Best choice after 9 years of use. I refit my MacBook Pro and upgrade it and now I will upgrade the SSD to 4 To. Apple doesn’t like we us our right to repair and upgrade.

That generation of laptops were pretty well built and last long time. Now Apple does not want that. It’s crazy that laptops and phones should last at most 4 years according to the companies. It’s insane. Glad you got more use out of yours :)

Hi. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Sadly, I can't get it to work. I am the problem.....I am a Windows power user but know zero about Linux. This is a foreign language for me. I can't get any of this to work. At all. There are things that are second nature to you that you don't spell out and I get lost. As I try to follow along I'm seeing different things than you are showing in your video. For example.... there is no "openrazer-meta" that shows up when I search for it. Is there a more rudimentary video to teach the basics of installing things in Linux from Github? (I've been looking for a couple of hours but I can't find anything that is slow enough for me to understand.....it seems that most people making these videos assume a much higher level of knowledge than I have.) Thanks again for making the video......I hope to be able to follow it one day. :)

Apple isn’t the best. They make good stuff but quality and innovation has dropped somewhat and my current iPhone is so slow now. For no reason. I know it’s Apple. They have been caught doing this. I think iOS is great, I actually like a lot of how Apple do things but the repairs, consumer rights, privacy, anti consumer practices etc. can not stand and the only way is to drop them until they change.
