It's so beautiful really
Your so wise
I’ve got a rainbow grub that’s just burrowed into the substrate and I haven’t seen her in a couple of days, is that normal? I’m new to this and I don’t want to disturb her but I hope she’s ok in there!
@marlastrongbow hello what stage of grub is she? If she's gone down to the bottom she could be shedding her skin to go into the next stage of larvae or if she I'd a later stage of larvae preparing a pupae chamber. See if you can see her at the bottom. I would leave her and check back another time just in case she is going into pupation but it does depend on her larvae stage.
@@theinsectnerdzarabreden thank you!

@marindarademeyer3399 aw nice do you have dumbo rats too?
How long have you been keeping beetles? X

Brilliant video!! I didn’t really think about the risk of them falling. I’ve got 10 philippinicum nymphs and am about to get some giganteum nymphs. I’ll keep that in mind when building the enclosure for the latter. Keep up the good work! 💜💜💜
Nice! I live next to a lake and would love to have more dragonflies on the property. Unfortunately you cant buy these guys in 100 packs like you do ladybugs. 😕 Thanks for sharing your dragonflies. 👍
Yeah I got these from blades biological. Then I let them go . Yeah although ita good to start with a few a sits better to raise them singly as they are canabilstic
And your welcome 😀
Thank you! I'm taking care of one right now! There name is Jeremy.
Also would like to add because I forgot to say that they must be around 24 degrees to want to lay eggs , I mean for the female to lay eggs
Hi, you have big diapherodes in your old video. Can you tell me exactly what enclosure you use when they get big? I hear that people who keep them aren't supposed to use a cage less than 2x their length. Thank you.
Hello yes the Diaphrades require big tall enclosure I tend to use a big butterfly net but when it gets cold in the winter I have a big tall tank. They can grow to 16cm so crucial to have something tall rather than wide. Hope this helps 😄
I meant that for the stag beetles not the stick insects
@@theinsectnerdzarabreden Thanks for the reply. Does the tank width have to be very wide too? Or only the tallness that matters?
Mostly tall but wide can be helpfully especially if you are keeping a big collection of them together. Hope this helps 😊
nice video , was considering getting some :0 subscribed
Thank you for the help i am taking care of a larvae
Hello there. I have a huge issue to solve which is temperature. It's mid October now and as you can imagine the temperature has already dropped significantly and my sun beetles are not coming out to eat and they are inactive unless there is a sunny and warm day. I really need a heating source but I don't know which is the best for my Exo Terra Faunarium 300x195x205 mm. Do I need a heat lamp or a mat? And which wattage will fit the best for them? Thank you in advance! Panos.
Hello happy to help. It depends where you keep them. I keep mine in the garage so use a 20watt but the mat is against the side of a tank which is longways, not all of the mat is touching the tank just the middle and it’s press against the other forcing the heat inside. I would say the temp had to be at least 17/18 at night. A extra room heater may also be beneficial. It’s a tricky time of year trying to keep insects and animals warm isn’t it. Heat mats won’t work beneath the tank as the heat won’t get through and if you have any grubs from breeding they may burn if they are at the bottom so the side is good or the back but maybe a slightly lower wattage heat Matt like 15w. If your enclosure is indoors and has some warmth already you can opt for a 15 watt Matt. If it’s somewhere cooler 20watts. Ofc make sure the heat mat isn’t too hot that it causes the soil to dry and then cause the beetles to have issues with their breathing. Hope this helps 😄
@@theinsectnerdzarabreden I will keep your suggestion and thanks about it. I can also share you some photos of my enclosure or a video just to make you fully understand which heating source will be the best for it. If you got an email I could show you my collection.
Blimey the size of that Caterpillar😍 wow . Congrats on your move x
Could you show us the enclosure please, I currently have a larvae and want to know what sort of enclosure Im going to need for the rainbow stag beetle :) thanks~
I will do a video on this soon.
Hi sorry I never got round to doing this. I apologise it was a weird year. Did u want to see an enclosure for adult or larvae?

Their so cute . Bet they grow quick ☺️
Gosh yes they are growing very quickly especially in this heat
Another great video . Their awesome 😎
Do you sell any? Also how much would you recommend cleaning the tank and changing the substrate
I don’t have many larvae at the moment and some of them r really small. I don’t have any adults. So clean out for beetles adults I would just take them out, clean the whole thing and replace the flake soil. I have a big massive tank filled with potting soil and a diverse collection of beetles so I need to take them out and do a big clean. With larvae, I keep them strictly in flake soil as they are sensitive to other soil types. Don’t do a total clean for them as they won’t be used to totally new stuff they will get upset by it , they need some of the old bacteria in there so I normally take half or less than half out and then put more wood in the bottom and layer it I will do a video to show this, would that be helpful? For more information on Rainbow Stags head to my website www.theinsectnerd.co.uk
Well I have adults but not for sale
@@theinsectnerdzarabreden how often do you recommend cleaning the tank
@@nadinecontreras8566 I clean the stag beetle larvae tank every 1 to t3 months. Make sure the soil is not too clogged up with faeces as the larvae will not eat. I check my often and if so dirty which it will be after that time take the faeces out and replace it with new flake soil and rotten wood. I wouldn’t do it too often as this will stress out the larvae. Adults I clean every 3 to 6 months depending on the state of the enclosure. But I also do spit cleans and get rid of any horrible rotten fruit or horrible jelly and change some bits of the soil. Hope this helps
@@nadinecontreras8566 hello so I’d clean the tank for adults every 4-5 months but would spot clean regularly taking rotten fruit and replacing some soil maybe every two weeks. For larvae is so a half clean every 2 to 3 months. However if u see the tub has a lot of faeces beforehand I’d clean it then as larvae will not eat from a soil clogged up with faeces. Remember to only do a half of part clean and ensure rotten wood is layered. So the bottom will have a layer of rotten wood, then add more flake soil then another layer of wood and so on until you get to the top. Also salary substrate to cool larvae down every so often especially in this hot weather but they don’t like it too damp. The soil just has to be stamp enough to scoop into a ball. Too wet will cause mould growth and kill your larvae
how long does it take for a beetle larva to turn into a adult beetle?
i have a early L3 i still don't know long will it take until it becomes pupa
Hello. It really depends on the beetle species. Smaller beetles like the Sun Beetle take 5 or 6 months to fully develop but a stag beetle larvae will take 3 to 7 years. Bigger beetles tend to take a longer time. Don’t worry if it’s not there yet they can in the l3 stage for a while. My megsoma elephas ate L3 but they are not ready to pupate yet so just have to let them get there. Providing enough food and warmth can be a good way to speed it up but not too hot as it will dry them up. I tend to put a load of rotten wood in there and try some Gammarus shrimp. Not too much but just a bit to give them some edges protein. Hope this helps. What type of larvae have you got ?
@@theinsectnerdzarabreden i have a Prosopocoilus giraffa makitai Larva, it's a big larva

Those are amazing little guys to keep! Side note, I have a female wolf spider called Aragog lol
Aw cute nice never kept a wolf spider before would love to though
@@theinsectnerdzarabreden You'd love a wolf spider I reckon. Really fun to watch hunt 😅
do they attack each other as larvae? can I keep several together
Some people keep larvae together in small groups in a big container but there is still a risk of them eating each other so I would try and keep them separately
Their lovely ☺️ looking forward to seeing them grow 🌸 x
Love your videos 🥰
Thank you really appreciate it. Will be doing more soon.
They are awesome 😎 great tips .
Very helpful thanks 👍🏻
Awww sorry to hear about Primrose 💚 Great video . Just a little tip for feeding insects . When mines were little I pulled the back legs off the hoppers or crickets as the insects hopping made them scared . I also gave em a quick dip in the Pangea 😬 torture lol 😂 . Or he or she just might not like bugs. My gargoyle gecko which are meant to enjoy eating insects more then cresties has gone right off them . Looking forward to seeing more vids on Pharaoh 😊 x
Thanks yeah she’s super fussy. I’ll try that

@@theinsectnerdzarabreden Awesome mate, can't wait! :D
What are you feeding your larvae? Plants/flowers? Anything else?
Hello the larvae like rotten oak leaves and twigs. Never give them conifers and always mix the food into the soil
Sorry I thought u were commenting on my giant beetle one. Lady bird larave eat aphids too. The best time to raise them is really end of spring going into summer as aphids are not found in the winter
All of my pet inverts have come by post and for the most part they have all arrived safely and well packaged from caring sellers ...with the exception of some black beauty nymphs I bought from ebay that arrived crammed into a flimsy playing card box inside a birthday card envelope, not even marked as fragile or containing live insects :( sadly only one survived the ordeal. Moral of the story: Always check feedback and buy from reputable established sellers
Thanks for the advice. Not all sellers are bad but I was aiming it more towards reptiles and amphibians being sent in the post. I rarely do get insects injured in the post but some people are careless and seem to not care what they put their insects in as long as the postage is low. But yeah just have to make sure they are reputable but totally disagree with sending animals like reptiles, amphibians and small animals in the post but unfortunately it does happen 😪
And sorry to hear about your nymphs
@@theinsectnerdzarabreden yea, it's shocking what some people think is OK.
@@snails_ford yes it is. One of the reasons why I made this video
Awesome video! My sister when she was younger got rabbits without the knowledge or commitment to look after them and they didn't last long. But this is why I only have a few tarantulas, because they're so easy to look after compared to virtually any other animal. I've had a lot of cats in the house too but they're family pets
We have cats but yh mostly have the insects and hamster too. And yh u have to be very careful. Rabbit's are to be said as high maintenance as dogs.
