Why I hate Tokyo's Amazing Public Transportation 🇯🇵
After an amazing month, I'm leaving Japan! I wanted to see the capybara cafe, but all the spots were reserved. So, I just wanted to close on my not so fun experience with the Tokyo metro and other public transportation in the city. I really loved my trip to Japan, but some things are so broken they need their own video 😉. I want to show both the good and the bad so that you know what it's really like to visit somewhere! I'm hoping to go back to Japan sometime in 2025, but it hasn't been confirmed yet. Thanks for following me in my journey so far! Next, I'll go somewhere completely different.

Visiting The Beautiful Nagoya Castle In Japan 🇯🇵
Переглядів 66Місяць тому
It happened to be pi day, so we had some pi at the math conference. Nerd stuff I guess? Diego and I explored more places during our last days in Nagoya. Especially the beautiful Nagoya castle. Where I got this spooky mask lol. My trip to Japan is coming to a close. Only one more destination left!

It was field trip day at the conference :). We checked out the Atsuta Jingu (Atsuta Shrine) and Shirotori Garden. After this, I went FAR outside of my comfort zone and ate a bunch of unfamiliar Japanese food for the conference dinner at KISOJI Meieki IMAI Bldg. I never ate anything from one of these hot pots before and there was some sort of crazy meat pudding. A little plum wine helped me be m...

I may owe my existence to the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan. My grandfather was scheduled to be in the first wave of forces to invade mainland Japan shortly after the bomb was dropped, but this was cancelled due to Japan's surrender. I knew that I had to visit this place. I've been to some places where terrible things have happened, but I never felt connected to any of these ...

Have to balance out the good with the bad! As memorable and wonderful as my trip to Japan was, there were a few things that stood out that I didn't like. After a month, I noticed a few. Join me walking around the mean streets of Sakae in Nagoya, Japan and find out what they were. I'm sure if I were to be around longer, the list would change. #nagoya #japanvlog #sakae

After being in Japan for a month (visiting Tsukuba, Tokyo, Sendai, Kyoto, Nagoya, and Hiroshima), I noticed a few things that I really liked in Japan. I definitely don't have any deep understanding of Japanese culture, so these are just things that stood out to me. I'm sure that I would have a different list if I stayed longer :). Come around beautiful Nagoya Castle with me and hear about some ...

Next stop in my trip to Japan was Nagoya! I made my way here to give a talk at Nagoya University and the conference CCR 2024: computability, complexity and randomness. I didn't really know much about this city before, but I got to see more whacky stuff from Japan and met some interesting people. #nagoya #japan #japanvlog

I was able to make it to the mipig pig cafe in Kyoto in time! This place was absolutely insane. Loud, noisy, oinking pigs that were super cuddly and friendly. Sort of an only in Japan thing 😆. After this, I got to shop and see some wild things in the Nishiki market. This was my last day in Kyoto and I'll miss it very much. Next stop in Japan: Nagoya! #kyoto #mipig #nishikimarket

Arashiyama Monkey Park! And Arashiyama Bamboo Forest! After giving my math talk at Kyoto University, I had some time to explore. The monkey park sounded really cool, but it was on the other side of town. After an hour of bus rides, I made it to this beautiful part of Kyoto. I wanted to get to the pig cafe, so I had limited time there. After the monkey park closed, I got to explore the mysteriou...

My next stop in Japan is Kyoto! This city really has a totally different vibe than where I've been so far. I gave my math talk at Kyoto University and went on to try some of the local cuisine and made my way to Ginkaku-ji (銀閣寺, Temple of the Silver Pavilion) officially known as Jishō-ji (慈照寺, Temple of Shining Mercy). And stick around for a very naughty surprise at the Kyoto University gift shop 🙈

Despite everyone at Tohoku University telling me it's stupid to go, I had to see this beautiful monstrosity of a statue in Sendai: The Sendai Daikannon (仙台大観音 or 仙台天道白衣大観音). This is currently the 9th tallest statue in the world and portrays a Buddhist goddess: the bodhisattva Byakue Kannon. Everyone I talked to thought it was scary or creepy. Honestly, I love this sort of stuff and this was my ...

Next stop on my math tour of Japan is Sendai! This city of more than a million people is in Miyagi Prefecture and the Tohoku region of Japan. I had a math talk to give at Tohoku University and had some time to explore this interesting city. Tower giant statues, a rat market, and some very confusing stores made for a wonderful experience :). What else can Sendai offer? ;) #sendai #miyagi #japan

i got an airbnb in kontula and only learned afterwards from some friends that it's a supposed "bad" neighborhood. it's just a little rundown, but i didn't see anything weird or scary. then again i wasn't out past midnight, maybe that's it.

Kontula is not dangerous it's dangerous by Finnish standards. It's an area where there is lot of cheap and state/city subsidized housing. That tends to increase people in the area whom don't have their shit together. Alcoholics, Drug users, mentally not well people. That might...and I mean might do some stupid shit out of desperation. And of course lot of lonely single peoples tend to move in to areas where housing is cheap and thus has some problematic behaviour and in that Kontula has slightly higher crime rate than in rest of Helsinki. As there is a slightly higher chance of something bad happening. But no it really is not every day maybe not even weekly. I was a armored car driver when I was 20 and my main route was in East-Helsinki we emptied banks deposit boxes and restocked ATM's at night and for that 5 years that I was there nothing happened except all alcoholics and addicts came out every summer and all the did was had philosophic discussion about life and death because during winter one of their mates died. Which was more sad than dangerous. Me or my partner was never threatened even once. Actually when they saw me and my pardner most of them were extremely courteous and told us who of their mates had died and on what he was on. I have never had a problem with people like them because mostly they just want to be treated like human beings. Then there might be occasional less fortunate that is having an mental episode but yeah Kontula...safest slum/hood in the world

From the web Asianstudies "the swastika has represented benevolence and good fortune for perhaps 99 percent of its long existence, and will always be a part of Asia's cultural, historic, and religious heritage"... good video btw

This is a brief description of that the Nobel Prize winner did. Look at both of your hands. They'd be nearly identical except that they can not be superimposed due to a center of asymmetry. Many molecules have this feature and the 'left' and 'right' handed molecules can have extremely different biological properties. Also, there are advantages in non-biological applications for having molecules of the same symmetry. Making chemicals like this with pure versions of one form or the other is really difficult and separating the two different forms can be extremely hard to do. He found ways to make pure versions of many of these molecules. That has huge applications in medicine and in materials research. So, it has huge scientific value and value in medical synthesis as well as in making high performance materials..

The decision to drop the bomb was an example of what became known (thanks to Star Trek) as a real life Kobayashi Maru scenario. Life is filled with small versions of those scenarios. War is filled with tragic, large scale versions. It's a matter of, "You're damned if you do and damned if you don't."

The basement is real! You missed the most fun part, also called the catacombs. And no this is not a joke, there is a vast network of underground tunnels and rooms not open to the public, students, or teachers. They used to be open to more people, but are now mostly closed.

Oh and Finland is pay to pee, kinda. Usually if you go to eat or cafe or something they have toilets (for customers) and also in many bigger shops (Prisma, Citymarket etc) they have free toilets. Sometimes you need to be buzzed in to the free ones too but it's just to ensure that people don't go there just to make a mess. You pay because somebody needs to clean it and usually those that doesn't have any kind of control are pretty dirty even if they are cleaned somewhat regularly.

If the local bus app didn't let you type in the right place, it probably meant that your bus app was too local 😄 You probably had Oulu area bus app, not Rovaniemi area one. Oh and it's actually opposite of what people say to you: Finns are nice and loyal and all that good stuff. We just aren't "polite" in a sense of making small talk etc. We are polite by leaving you to your own peace when we don't have a need to actually communicate with you about something.

If you haven't been in sauna in Finland (as it sounded), you can't say yet that you hate sauna. It is very hard to find a good sauna (/sauna experience) outside of Finland. Best is when you get to go to a cabin and relax there and go to a wood burning sauna (well actually best is smokesauna but that's a novelty thing even for Finns nowadays). Electric saunas can be good or they can be awful, so they are a bit of gamble. So in summary: give sauna a chance in Finland if you get offered that by a Finn 😃 (I'm not talking about one on swimming pools or gyms but a good one)

Why would anybody attack/steal somebody recording? Then you have evidence against. Also it's usually woman who feel more vulnerable in certain areas than men. I have no idea if Kontula is as bad as people say but those are just couple of observations I thought of 😃

This is in fact very important issue about the societies needing to acknowledge some dark sites of their history and learn from them. Polish society is not a role model here where in fact the antisemitism lesson was not learned, because all mentions about dark history create backlash. Germany is always put as a role model in terms of Holocaust and Nazism, yet did not so well in terms of colonialism. England could be a role model for acknowledging its colonial dark past. Russia never wanted to really face it's colonial history, genocides, Stalinism. Now you can see how that affects present days. Japanese society is quite racist in modern terms. Poland is very antisemitic. Germany seems to be quite open in terms of migration and the political correctness in terms of antisemitism is very strict, yet it had it's businesses with Russia ignoring the sake of smaller countries, talking with Russia like empire with empire. Russia never wanted to acknowledge it's history and now we have authoritarian country on the imperial war against Ukraine.... Maybe there are some simplifications here, but I agree we should process dark history too, otherwise it all can happen again.

"The reindeer droppings" salmiakki is just making fun of the shape of the candies. They are just normal salmiakki candies. Btw. real salmiakki has nothing to do with liquorice even if it looks similar 😄 It's actually made of ammonium chloride. Some candies mix in some liquorice too but then it's not "pure" salmiakki. It's common misconception (that even Finns keep up) that salmiakki is just salty liquorice.

The green "elf" you saw on the window in the train means that's emergency exit 😂 That's a good to know sign in Finland. There was small "hammer" there on the window that can be used to smash the window if you need emergency exit. Secondly: You got one of the old sleepers in train. In the newer ones you have toilet in every room etc. I think the price is still the same but some trains are of the older sleepers and some are newer.

The bad neighborhoods in finland usually mean "there are many immigrants and substance users there" Of course socio-economic problems are overrepresented in areas where there are proportionally more immigrants, alcoholics, drug users and others of less fortune but that doesn't mean those places are even remotely no-go zones The reality however is that you're not going to have to fear for your life even if those places are kinda ghetto
