Classics and Chill

Приєднався 27 лип 2020
Part audiobook, part English lesson, part book club, Classics and Chill is a video podcast where an English major guides a bunch of her friends (who love books but are new to classics) through some of the greatest works of literature.
Classic literature has a bad rap--it's thought to be stuffy, confusing, and most of all, boring.
Truth is, classic lit is exciting, engaging, and can be super fun to read, especially with a group of friends.
Classics and Chill is a new series designed to show the world how fun authors like Shakespeare and Shelley can be. Let's dive into old books and find the humanity and the humor. After all, they're famous for a reason--and that reason isn't that they're boring and lame. 😎

tysm!!! this is helpful!
This was surprising helpful. Didn’t realise I needed advice like this. Thank you
For once the captions match the words 👌
Tis why i perfer norse paganism can't stand the petty poseidon
As a Hellenic pagan, in my experience Poseidon is not like this, at least not now. The Odyssey was written by humans so we can’t trust everything in it to be accurate either. Stories about gods are unreliable as a source of what they’re like, you have to actually talk to them. Also.. no offense but if you don’t like petty gods so you went to Norse paganism, I’m pretty sure pettiness is Loki’s whole thing
I never thought about it this way, but this makes a lot of sense! Might go re-watch some SpongeBob episodes in the name of ~research~ lol

@squirrelsRawesome Oh yeah, so it is. I guess it's not from something I've seen then. 😅
I would. But the car claimed my chair.

You have no idea how much this helps me .This helped me so much definitely as a Young new writer.
"Sometimes you have to kill your babies" - William Goldman
I have a trilogy and a 4 book series, and 2 other books that I’ve not read a single time since “finishing.” I’ve organized all the scenes and chapters, but not finished a final draft on a single one. Ditto for countless short works ranging from 10k-30k words. I write them for me and to get it out of my head, so it doesn’t really matter. No one else will ever read any of them.
Thanks for the tip, I will keep it in my mind. This video deserves more attention
I think you are to freakin 😱 😨 🙀 shocked by by your owm moms appearance
What?
Nice rack!
First❤❤❤
Lesbia was Catullus' girlfriend, whose real name was Clodia, and she was married to someone else, thus the pseudonym. But a real person she was.

Interesting and intriguing story of the writer's life. It varies though, but, in general, it's good

Strictly it is not quite Achilles 'girlfriend' that Agamemnon takes when he has to give up his own 'girlfriend'. The girls, Briseis and Chryseis, are both slaves who have no choice of which man they belong to. We are dealing with a distant time where values and customs were very different from ours. It was accepted and not seen as wrong (except to the victims, presumably) that in war when an enemy town is captured the men there are all killed, the town's wealth is looted and the women and girls treated as part of the loot, to be shared out among the conquerors as slaves. That is what had happened to Chryseis, who became the slave of Agamemnon, and Briseis, who was enslaved by Achilles. This must have been traumatic for her initially, as later in the Iliad she says that in conquering her city Achilles had killed her husband and brothers. However, Achilles seems to like Briseis and becomes attached to her, and it is clear she would rather be his slave than Agamemnon's, and even hopes Achilles may promote her to wife. Probably hard for us to imagine the emotions of a young woman in her situation. She would have been aware and perhaps resigned to the fact that in those days it was the normal fate of women such as herself on the losing side in war to become slaves of the victors. She may also not have been immune from admiration of Achilles as a mighty warrior hero. It was likewise accepted that a master had the right to require his slave women to have sex with him. The Greek warriors are men and have been away at the war for 9 years by this stage, away from their own women all that time. There must be an awful lot of pent up lust and sexual frustration in the Greek army, therefore. Hence, in part, Thersites' grievance about Agamemnon keeping most of the captured girls for himself and Nestor's promise to the Greek army that if they persevere and capture Troy, every Greek warrior will get as his reward a Trojan's wife to go to bed with. Pity whatever Trojan wife becomes the slave of the ugly Thersites and has to go to bed with him. In this video, the dark haired man with the glasses, when he speaks the part of Thersites in a silly voice, is annoying and hard to make out the words.
Yes, thank you for this context! It is our intention to simplify for the modern reader, so we use modern terms like "girlfriend" as a simplification. But yes, simplifications--inherently--do cut out some details. This is a great explanation of cultural context! Thanks!
