Pollinators on Late-flowering Thoroughwort
Переглядів 704 місяці тому
What I like about this video is that it gives a sense of what I experience while scrutinizing one of the big wildflowers in the backyard in its late-summer glory. Boneset and Late Boneset (aka late-flowering thoroughwort) grow to a perfect height for observing the pollinators that visit them in late summer. Here we see a bunch of nimbly bumbling bumblebees, a wasp ambushed by an ambush bug, a c...
Smoyer Park Wet Meadow
Переглядів 934 місяці тому
For a native garden, early intervention to remove aggressive weeds makes all the difference. A brief tour of a haven for pollinators in Smoyer Park in Princeton, NJ. A detention basin was converted in 2016 from turf to native grasses and wildflowers by Partners for Fish and Wildlife. Ongoing followup by Friends of Herrontown Woods has added additional native species and prevented invasive speci...
Collecting Loose Leaves in the Street With a "Claw"
Переглядів 3446 місяців тому
Piling leaves loose in the street creates a tremendous challenge for town crews that then need to clean up the mess. None of the collection methods are very efficient, and all use big trucks and a lot of energy. This video shows how a large vehicle uses a 2000 pound "Claw" to pick up a couple pillowy piles of leaves, while three other crew members and two other trucks stand largely idle.
Ann Arbor's Compost Carts Containerize Yard Scraps
Переглядів 9316 місяців тому
Ann Arbor has clean streets year-round, due to an efficient system for containerizing and collecting leaves and brush. Three rollcarts one each for trash, recyclables, and yard scraps, are placed at the curb one day per week for collection. Thank you to Ann Arbor resident Karen Wight for this testimonial on the blessings of compost carts.

Special Native Plants at Bennett Place
Переглядів 13Рік тому
A field in Durham, NC with many native plants, including Arnica and an insectivorous dwarf sundew. Bennett Place, the historic site where the largest surrender in the Civil War took place, has 40 acres of woods and field in the headwaters of Ellerbe Creek. Sundew, more typically found closer to the coast, grows here due to the very unusual soil, which can get hard as a rock when dry, yet harbor...
Backyard Garden Native Wildflowers in Full Bloom
Переглядів 114Рік тому
My backyard garden in full bloom in mid-August, 2023. Rose mallow hibiscus, cutleaf coneflower, Joe Pye Weed, cupplant, wild bergamot, autumn Helenium, virgin's bower all powered by sunlight and runoff from the neighbors. Not many pollinators this year.

A reading by actor Yuval Boim of my piece on how small things add up, part of the 2022 second annual Among Trees event on the grounds of Veblen House at Herrontown Woods in Princeton, NJ. Organized by actor Vivia Font, hosted by the Friends of Herrontown Woods with help from the Princeton Public Library and Small World Coffee, the event combined readings of locally sourced nature writing with m...
Anyway, Any Way
Переглядів 1032 роки тому
This is a recent composition with a simple motif that sounds like "anyway", but gets more profound as time goes on. Something about all the striving we do in life, only to become just another layer in the ongoing deposition of culture and generations, one on top of the other.
Crying It Out

Dedicated to all the dance floors of yesteryear. After composing it in 2011, I found that this tune takes me back to the late 1970s, when I was touring with a big band whose music dated back to the 1930s. In the big band era, there were the bands that toured nationally and internationally, and then there were the territory bands whose fame was more local. This was a territory band, still crissc...
Maybe More Than Maybe, Baby
Переглядів 882 роки тому
An original jazz composition by Steve Hiltner, performed in concert in April, 2022 by Phil Orr on piano and Steve Hiltner on alto sax. The tune's motif vacillates, starting with down-up-down, then up-down-up. By the end, though, it's clear that there's something more than maybe going on. If you're saying "baby," you've got to think it's more than maybe. - SustainableJazz.com
Start-Stop Samba

An original composition by Steve Hiltner, performed in concert in April, 2022, by Phil Orr on piano and Steve Hiltner on alto sax. In the extended intro, a samba groove keeps getting interrupted until it finally breaks free and carries through to the end of the tune. SustainableJazz.com
Invasive Species Denial
Переглядів 2343 роки тому
A presentation at the North Carolina Invasive Plant Council 2021 conference. The first 20 years of this century saw the rise of a false narrative that denied the threat of invasive species. The talk explores techniques used in books, websites, articles, and opeds to demonize native plant advocates and discourage action to counter the spread of invasive species.
Dorothy's Garden

A song I wrote the day after seeing Dorothy Mullen for the last time. She was a kindred spirit who lived a full life and left a legacy to live on after her, including two gardens and two nonprofit organizations. Well known for her gardens both the one in her front yard and the one she started and tended with help from students, teachers and parents for many years at Riverside Elementary School ...

Really lovely, Steve! YES! SO glad you didn't do the obvious!
Thanks, Dotty.
Wondering if you have used any of the words from your talk-- (what's) that about... pile of notes... at the end.... what it means.... it's about.... all our work... (while) we're alive.... then we're gone.... (re)peated notes.... let it go... all the tunes... what's all this.... through composed.... (wha) does it mean.... it comes back... different key... different place... even then.... it would go... obvious... melody... that's enough... anyway......... obvioius?... obvious... maybe not... maybe so... stopping now
That’s why people shouldn’t focus on material objects but nature as it will always remain when we’re gone and will hopefully endure all the damage. That’s something people in the future can enjoy and never wonder what it’s use is.
Good point!

Clever, and yes, a little hamlet it is, but a little big hamlet, or so Princeton would like to think, like Little Big Man.
