Awful launch, but is Wuthering Waves a good game? Version 1 review!
Wuthering Waves just came out, and unlike many I decided to go in almost completely blind.
I had watched a couple of trailers, but knew practically nothing outside of the general premise and some brief clips of the combat. I was excited, but wary.
While many have enjoyed the game so far, the launch has been plagued with technical problems from day one, and there have been some seriously concerning issues and horrendous mistakes by the developer since then. At times things got so bad that some people even began to speculate whether the game might not survive…
So, is this a game worth playing? Was it doomed to be just some filler between Genshin patches, or does it stand in its own right? And what the heck are the developers doing?

Fantastic DPS or Feeble Scholar? Alhaitham character review!
Переглядів 2,6 тис.День тому
Alhaitham was highly anticipated for months, was extremely popular when he first came out, and remains a fantastic choice as a DPS. So why does it feel like he rarely gets mentioned these days? Outside of combat he’s one of the most nuanced characters in the game. To this day people have strong disagreements about him - particularly his relationship with Kaveh - and yet, his story quest was one...
Why everyone should get Layla • Genshin character review!

Layla is one of my favourite four stars in Genshin, but she’s often overlooked. Her main story appearances were in time-limited events, so people who missed them didn’t get a chance to love her as a character. Her role in combat is one of the least glamorous, and she’s forever in the shadow of an archon. And to make it worse, many guides suggest a hybrid build for her which is misguided in my o...
Was she worth it? Arlecchino character review

Arlecchino was one of the most hyped up characters in Fontaine, and with good reason. The five stars so far in version five have been brilliant, especially the ones who played a major role in the archon quests - Neuvillette and Furina at the top of the list. So when Hoyo finally announced that the fourth of the Fatui Harbingers was coming soon, everyone was excited. I had enjoyed her part in th...

Genshin’s late-game experience has always been wildly different to the early-game. A little over a year ago, I created a second Genshin account to help refresh my memory, expecting to play through the first couple of regions and then let it go. Instead, I’ve kept it going, albeit at a very casual pace, and it’s become an experiment to see the game through the eyes of a fairly casual free-to-pla...

I was very happy when Lyney was released, because I did not want to pull for him. It’s honestly pretty great when Hoyo releases a character I’m not interested in. More time to save up for future characters, fewer resources needed, not to mention no need to farm more artifacts… While I didn’t dislike Lyney, he didn’t appeal to me either. And the last thing I needed was another pyro DPS. So why o...

Neuvillette is a fantastic character, but he’s not without his downsides. I was unsure about him to begin with, but through the story he won me over. But are there reasons any Genshin player should not pull for the Lord of Otters? Neuvillette wish...

From the moment I saw Chiori, just based on aesthetics and personality alone, I knew I had to get her. However, now that she’s here, I have mixed feelings. Does Genshin actually have a problem? And if so, how can they fix it?

Many people feel that Genshin has a problem: the filler patches. I feel the same frustrations, but don’t entirely agree. It’s pretty common for people to point to the floods of money pouring into Genshin, the unbelievable profit margins Hoyo are seeing on any investment they make into the game, and the fairly typical size of their team by triple-A standards, and make the obvious conclusion that...

He started off strong when he was first released, but was considered by many to have been left behind by the meta over time, and he’s often overlooked. I played with him anyway, even in the abyss. I’ve lost count of how many times people told me they have not built their Faruzan yet because they don’t have her C6. Practically everyone seems to think she’s completely unusable without it. Fontaine started with a bang, which gave me high hopes that the archon quests would measure up to the standard set in Sumeru. When it comes to Genshin character ratings, Aloy is so far down the list that she might as well not exist. On the rare occasions that she does get mentioned, it’s to dismiss her as irrelevant and underwhelming. Sadly, there’s a lot of truth in that. The music in this game is so generic and have no melody' at all , the world isnt designed with care and aesthetic in mind . It just seems like its just a open wolrd for the sake of having a open world . Not like genshin where every area seems its there for a reason and is aesthetically pleasing. I do not enjoy the exploration in this game as i did in genshin. Killing bosses is cool and all and fun i wont disagree. But is that enough? I already killed all of them and now i kill them all with my eyes closed .

    I too went in completely blind with the only thing I knew was verina was good and yinlin adds. But the game has been great all around especially with the movement. People say they like to just walk around open world games for fun but I never got what they meant until this game. Even with all the kinks that still need ironing out especially with some voice directing I think this is a great game worth playing and I’d even spend on it a little. I hope we can see more of Jianxen since she seems cool but only has a brief appearance

      I don' know if this was aimed at me, but the reason I make a lot of comparisons between WuWa and Genshin is tha 1. it's the same genre, and 2. there's no doubt the target audience has huge overlap :) You'll notice I make a passing reference to some of my other favourite open world games as well (albeit non-gacha), and the fact that these games even pop up on my mind is a positive reference

    Wuthering Waves actually runs in Unreal Engine which is designed for 3D and higher specs so the Graphics of WuWa provides amazing 3d like environment while Genshin runs in Unity designed strongly for 2D or cartoonish or anime like design environment. Also In terms of color design, WuWa will not add more vibrant colors like in Genshin since it is a Post-Apocalyptic Theme compared to Colorful world like Genshin so there isn't any problem with that. There is also quests to unlock the beauty of the environment especially the dead tree with the monkey that will make it bloom once you finish the quest for it. many areas should be unlocked to show the beauty in it. I'm happy they add such environmental and area changes in their post-apocalyptic theme. I'm excited to 1.1 area upcoming where you can skii in the snow and heal in the hotsprings! soon to come in patch 1.1 june 28 ❤

    Moments of wonder, some locations change its look, weather and music after you finished certain quests, instead of the "wow" moment it's the opposite kind that is "less is more" like Ender Lilies, or in other words you don't get dopamine but you get serotonin. "lack challenge", the game has been catering to casuals a lot that it gives them the means to ease the suffering, you can actually decide your challenges, the game is as hard as you want it to, it's not challenging because you don't want it to be. Combat depth, the basics of combat are attack, defend and counter, choosing what, when, where and how to use those is the "depth of combat", planning and preparing to do 1 thing efficiently is what i would call "depth of logistics". "Execute optimal rotation sequence like rhythm games", sorry ma'am, it's the complete opposite, wuwa combat at its core is the rhythm game, observe boss's pattern and respond accordingly is the very basic mechanic of every rhythm games "watch pattern and touch at the right part", you sound like you've never played an actual rhythm game before. The essence of great combat is like dancing with companion where both move in respond to each others, it's not a combat if both just do whatever they want whenever convenient, it's just massacre. Your other points are valid but they are something can be improved with time, the story was totally cucked by their CN base players whose opinions about story are too vanilla, the initial story in CBT1 was actually better

    Thank you so much, I couldn't put my finger on what it was about the beginning of the game dialog that just made me feel like my brain was going to explode. Now I know it was the fact that they spoke at with just raw world and story information rather than letting us experience it. I'd say around act 3 that stopped and you got information about the world history more through the story although there still was quite a bit of info dump. I'm hoping as things move forward this gets a little more evened out.

    People don't talk about the elephant in the room: mobile experience of this game was one of the worst in the last years. And it's not better, the game exits and needs reinstalling even now from time to time. It should be only for PC/console. But the devs are greedy and go for mobile for transactions. On the other hand on PC the game is top. Even so it still has camera issues in combat. Echoes system is just a cancer, especially how important it is for your damage in the game.

    Genshins worst aspect is the combat (except the reaction system) and some 5 star characters kit design. It is insane how unintuitive dodging feels and some 5 stars are burst DPS which is a nightmare to play in the overworld. I think WuWa really nailed the combat system and makes characters feel rewarding to understand, let's hope they get better voice actors & improve the world design!

  • @mismismism

    WuWa is in a weird spot for me. The combat is fantastic when the game runs properly. The story I thought was awful, the English voice acting was bad and it was made worse by the updates sometimes making lag so bad it was almost unplayable. My final battle was ruined by the performance, it took me 3 days to just get through it from stuttering, so it completely killed any chance of hype or caring about the story. And it's sad because today the game runs smooth for me but the damage is done, I don't care about the story or really know what is going on after fighting with the game just to be able to play. Combat makes me want to play but almost everything else is kind of a fail to me if I'm blunt.

    I was ready to love this game. I hadn't followed any of the beta, but had heard the main focus of the combat, being dodging based, so I was hoping it would be an improvement on one of my main issues with genshin. My friends (who mostly are genshin haters) were hyping wuwa to be an incredible gacha combat system, a better open world, with cooler (hotter) characters. I was ready on launch to play but when I finaly first got in (after hours of loading, not a good sign), the game just wasnt preforming. I knew the story wasnt going to be what i cared about, but i was ready for the combat. The problem was the performance. The game runs at what has to be less than 3 fps in combat. I really want to enjoy the combat in this game, but I cant. I want to say the combat is good, better than any action gacha as people are saying, but i cant. Because it doesn't work. You can have the greatest game design ever, but its not good game design if i cant play it. I cant say wuwa has a better combat experience then genshin, because I can't experience it. These are things I never had to deal with in genshin, despite it being, in theory, a worse designed game

    Thank you for providing a balanced analysis, acknowledging both positives and negative. 😀 Fantastic observation about the pitfalls of easy exploration. I agree the "wow" moments fewer in WW. I think you're spot on since, one is more likely to stop, look around, go WOW and take in the reward of the effort of climbing up a mountain, compared to just "fast tracking" there and fun up the cliff. Like most people, I am drawn to the combat in WW. But that usually isn't enough to keep me there. I very much prefer the atmosphere (visual, music and lore) of Genshin. I don't yet feel connected to the characters. But who knows, given more time, direction, things may change. The real battle now is finding the time for Genshin and WW AND life. Goodbye sleep! 😢

    I personally love it when they make shielders that offer a bit more than shielding. Yea Zhongli is great if you only want a shield. But he ends up being a dps loss because that's all he provides for the team. Right now I've been using Layla with my C0R1 Clorinde, and been loving it. To be fair to Zhongli, he does provide a 20% resistance shred (and usually 4p Tenacity for people), so he does have a very rare benefit there. Layla's C4 I tend to ignore since it's so weak sadly, but overall I do prefer Layla because cryo is so much more useful than geo! I need to use Kirara more... my go-to with Clorinde has been Baizhu - Furina/Baizhu/Nahida/Clorinde is legit ridiculously strong - been too long since I used Kirara for something and she'd be such a great fit for Clorinde!

    I really don't understand why everyone praises the exploration so much. The world is bigger than Genshin's, more on the scale of Tower of Fantasy, while you move at a Genshin pace. Unlike ToF, it has no vehicle, the grappling hook is awful, and while you can run up walls, it uses stamina to do so unlike in Tower of Fantasy where you can run up walls using an item, and also jump up them normally without stamina usage. And ToF isn't very good, so when one of your best features is a worse version of Tower of Fantasy's, it's really strange to see it get so much praise.

    • @raptori
      @raptori 3 дні тому

      It's just because people find it fun! It's not flawless, it's not even the best dodge/parry melee combat I've encountered, but it's a nice mix of different ideas implemented well enough that I'm having fun when I'm playing it. Totally valid for it to not hit the spot for you though! I think the wall-running and other exploration stuff is just people viewing it in contrast to Genshin, which admittedly *is* more painful ...in the few locations which still don't have fast-travel ziplines sprinkled in strategic locations. WuWa's exploration feels "easy", which can be nice when you want to explore without challenge, but overall I def prefer Genshin's. Other people (Saurus for example) are much more tired of Genshin's approach, so the lower barrier to get to places appeals much more 😁

    • @genevievemccluer7503
      @genevievemccluer7503 3 дні тому

      @@raptori whoops, I meant exploration, but I do also think the combat is overrated. I'm replaying Elden Ring right now and that's extra biasing me, but the combat is just...fine. Like it's fun, but I hate that just attacking faster makes you better at parrying to the point that it kinda breaks parrying as a concept. Genshin's ziplining in more recent areas helps a lot, but they also just have so many movement characters. You've got Sayu, Yelan, Lynette, Arlecchino, Wanderer, and especially Xianyun, who all make exploration a lot more fun and easier, in a world that's already scaled a lot better for exploration. I just figured Tower of Fantasy was the better comparison since no one thinks it's amazing despite it having better exploration in like every way than WuWa's.

I've never played Elden Ring - the combat in Souls games sounds like utter hell to me, so something like Tsushima or to a lesser extent WuWa is a better balance for someone like me! Definitely agree on exploration in WuWa being a bit overrated. I don't think ToF gets much mention just because so few people play it 😂 And yeah I'm only missing Wanderer out of those so I get what you mean, though locking comfortable/fun exploration behind non-free characters arguably kinda sucks, means that newer players or people who just happen to dislike those characters end up with a noticeably worse experience. We actually pulled mother bird on our F2P alt account because after having her for a couple of weeks on our mains, the entire game felt awful on the alt! 😎

But WuWa just doesn't have any of those. It has genuinely the most boring movement in the genre for me and I hate the grappling hook with a passion for just...not being a grappling hook. It's barely an extra jump. Thouhg if you can manage Tsushima and Wuwa, I really don't think Souls games would be that hard for you. Enemies hit a lot harder in Wuwa and the timing can be a lot more precise, and you don't have as many ways to make the game easier. They just also tend to be a bit more interesting to fight. And I actually do like WuWa, I've been enjoying playing it since launch, I just really don't get why everyone acts like it's so far above other games with its combat and exploration when they're just serviicable. And Genshin's combat is honestly better as it actually has more interesting combination to engage with with the elemental reactions and results in more interesting team building and considerations, but that's even more of a hot take lol.

I'm guessing they'll add some at some point, but running around does mean basically only one speed at the moment 😆 Yeah maybe it's just the way people have talked about it rather than the actual game... people seem to revel in how frustrating it is, since they get a big rush when they finally defeat a boss after hours of attempts. In similar situations in the past, I've had all the frustration and none of the rush - my feeling after finally beating something like that is always "well that was a waste of time", and since a large part of the appeal many people talked about in Elden Ring is "these bosses are so difficult, it took me 4 hours to beat this one!" it sounded very much not for me 😂 I guess part of it is the bizarre thing where people feel the need to "pick a side" and emotionally invest in being "superior" even when that whole thought process is idiotic. Much more interesting to look at the pros and cons and see _why_ people might lean one direction or the other, especially since then you could see ways for the devs to create something which is the best of both worlds!

    I have a lot of the same feelings about the game as you. The combat is so fun, easily the best aspect of the game! The swap-cancel mechanics are my favorite. I just love seeing two of my characters on the field at the same time -- it feels like teamwork! Without reactions however, the element system in Wuthering Waves doesn't seem to have much meaning, but perhaps that will take shape over time. I unfortunately experienced numerous technical issues with the game when it launched, and although it's much better now, it still takes forever to load on my PC. It doesn't really feel great on the phone either, with how technical the combat can be. Another small gripe of mine is that prior to release, when I was trying to find info about the game on UA-cam, it felt like every other video was talking about how "Genshin is trash," "Genshin could never," etc. and as a Genshin player, that really left a bad taste in my mouth. All in all, I am enjoying Wuthering Waves, and I hope it finds its footing after its rocky launch.

The hostility in the CBT1 was just one of the things people complained about. Majority of the complaint came from how the story was way too aimless and lacked structure. EN just tunnel visioned on the hostility thing in the story without reading what the majority of those who played CBT1 complained about. The story we got right now, while not the best in the grand scheme of things, is way better than the previous one. It made you wonder why every faction is after you. Then the Huaxu Academy records showed you one of the reasons why, and now especially with what happened in Act 3 and 5.

    The gameplay is more fresh albeit pretty much had the same mechanic and interface as its senior (Genshin), there's a couple differences and conveniences but nothing too big. In terms of story, unfortunately it still hasn't hooked me yet, the same goes for the english voice acting decisions. So overall, the only thing this game currently excells at is its gameplay mechanics. In terms of generosity, it's hard to say, this game isn't even 5 months old yet, still very fresh, it still hasn't shown its true color yet, obviously the devs want to compete so they're trying to one upping the senior, but this game is growing its popularity very fast, and they currently surpassing the senior, so we'll see how it can maintain its pace. I personally want both game to succeed, I've already attached to Genshin's "world" and characters, I've been there from day 1, so I won't leave until they finished their story no matter what. And I've already 100% every region WuWa is currently offering except Jinzhou region (which is currently 99%, that pesky 1% supply chest where tf is it). Genshin did also have some issues and controversies at launch, mainly the "BotW clone" thing, along with some balance issues (Venti at the time being more OP than any character is today), and most infamously, the wonky unfinished Inazuma archon quest a year-ish later (after a very long content drought). But for WuWa, there's two main differences: the launch problems are more serious ("nerfing" a weapon people already spent money on because of a mistranslation? oh jeez...), and it's trying to compete with a certain immensely popular and extremely similar game which most of its players have already sunk years of time and money into. They really can't afford to scare anyone away. Personally, I don't have the time or energy for another open-world gacha game, but I still hope WuWa survives to give Hoyo some competition, and/or to funnel off some of the people who won't stop complaining about how Genshin's combat is (supposedly) too easy.

    Well, my verdict is if they dont fix the combat in 1.1 i am out. I feel like Content Creators have lied to me about the combat in this game. Yes, its much more skill based then genshin and has lot more options, and it is awesome fighting the bosses. But outside of boss fights, it is for me atleast a terrible experience. Auto targeting,/soft lock-on is so awful, that after only 10 minutes of echo farming i feel like had enough. Auto-targeting is a pain yeah, though have you tried with the manual targeting? Neither auto-targeting or manual targeting feels quite right to me, BUT in the situations where auto-targeting feels unusable, the manual targeting is just about good enough, and vice versa. I think the auto-targeting aims towards the enemy closest to the center point of the screen? Which means that subtle differences in how people prefer to position their camera would result in massively different gameplay experiences. I'm used to using the camera to keep aware of everything around me in other games, so having to keep it more restrictive in WuWa is an annoyance, especially when surrounded by enemies... still enjoyable for me though. As a Genshin veteran, I honestly prefer Wuthering Waves overall in almost every aspect. The pros outweighs the cons so far. Not to mention the dev-player communications. I just hope they keep their feet on the ground. And improve the game in all aspects. 7:47 we have a drastically different experience. To me, WuWa's world ironically felt more alive, more immersive, and more awe-inspiring despite it being a post-apocalyptic game. The environmental design and environmental story-telling telling beats Genshin for me. Why? Due to it's dynamic environment and over-world NPC AI. Some world quests involves areas that changes. From the Banyan tree, to the port city, to the Stygian Lacrimosa Quest. Even the eternal concert quest with retroact rain is so engaging and immersive. Even the kundane Tacet Fields show this. When you go near them, the sky changes. And since I've mentioned it, the skybox is absolutely gorgeous. I think WuWa's environmental design isn't meant to be idyllic like in Genshin. It's suppose to instill a balance between awe and dread due to it's genre. To me, the only truly lemorable time I experience this in Genshin is only thrice, on the adeptis abofe in Liyue, on top of dragonspine and in enkanomiya. But here, all the dynaim environment from the quest and even the dynamic skybox gave me that feeling. Overall, I felt like Genshin's environment is full of eye candy. In WuWa, it has more subtance due to it's ruined nature hence every corner tells a story. To the point that you wonder what happened to the empty office buildings or the train wrecked.

    • @raptori
      @raptori 3 дні тому

      Valid points for sure - glad WuWa really hits that spot for you! Genshin's lack of dynamic changes to the world is def a sore point for me, both at a low level (love it when emergent events happen like different types of enemies encountering one another and getting into a fight) and at a high level (why the frick has nobody fixed the bridge in Liyue yet), but I love the exploration in spite of that. I think the idyllicism is the big difference for me - I've played so many other open-world games with a more realistic approach, which *really* made me stop in my tracks. The top there for me are Horizon, where every single moment looks like the most beautiful natural photography, RDR2, which feels so grounded and real that when everything comes together it's truly breathtaking (sunrise through the fog in the swamps for example is magnificent), or Tsushima, which is slightly more fantastical but just feels so alive. WuWa's aesthetic makes my brain lean towards expecting those kinds of things, and so far that's been lacking. Genshin is more like, ghibli-esque, which definitely makes me have different expectations!

And yeah, Genshin's reaction to this is legit the part I'm most excited about, even though WuWa's combat is something I enjoy a ton. Yeah it's an interesting part of it - I'm the same as Saurus, haven't had any wow moments, and yet when I take some time to deliberately just walk around and look at different locations, they're pretty beautiful. Maybe it's partly because I've not had any of those specific planned moments like when you get your first view of Monstadt, or when you walk through the pass and see the Liyue plain spread out before you? Legit could be something a simple as just having a different default camera angle which means I don't even notice the cool locations until I'm already there. And also might be partly because the aesthetic feels slightly more realistic, which then starts to make things remind me of visuals in scifi films or comic book movies. When I go dodge or parry the game lags or my character will go into this weird running pose. The story really turned me off, I find that kind of story so bad, personal opinion but I hate Mary-Sue story lines. The physics of the game was the final straw for me, I've play JRPG's for nearly 20 years now and have seen all sorted when comes to jiggly physics, and whilst I know WuWu is not a JRPG it is still catering for a certain group of people that only make up a limited amount of the player base. I have unistalled the game, I may come back to in 6 months or so if things get better but right now there are too many issues for me to really enjoy the game. But I hope you continue to have fun with the game and maybe give an update on the game at somepoint to let us know if things get better.

      Yeah really hope they fix the technical issues! I'm really curious how the original story felt - I feel completely the same about mary-sue stuff, it kinda kills the story for me - it sounds like the original would've worked a lot better.

    The story is so bad I just can't feel invested in the game at all. Also, it's not really a game I'd want to play on my commute to work either. Those 2 factors lead me to believe this game may fall off in the future as it's not going to capture the casual audience quiet like Genshin Impact did. The combat can be really fun, but sometimes it feels a little janky. I had just played the ZZZ beta and the difference in quality is noticeable.

      Oh that's a fascinating point - never thought of how perfect Genshin is for things like commuting... can absolutely see WuWa being a bit of a miss for that kind of audience. I think there's a big enough subset that will like what they're aiming for, but that's definitely a big reason Genshin will probably stay far ahead in total player numbers!

      ahh I haven't give ZZZ a go at all yet 👀 YEah it deifnitely feels like there's more focus on the battle (which I do like!) but in a game like this you do need the casual story/lore enjoyers... I'm hoping the story will pick up pace a little, but so far i'm not very invested either D:

      Can you elaborate on ZZZ combat part? I played HI 3rd for 5 years, and that game's combat are a lot more cinematic compared to GI or WW. Im sure it's because HI 3rd is not an open world, it plays in small stages like ZZZ so it allows for highly cinematic combat without causing problems or taking away the exploration feels & vision of an open world. I imagine it'll be pretty bad if I got to play GI open world with HI 3rd kind of combat animation. Pretty interested in ZZZ combat and how it compares to HI 3rd.

    My issue with the game is that the combat really requires the game to perform well so u can react to the enemies, but the game just does not perform well at all on my iPhone (which can run Genshin just fine). And so the combat and exploration just feel bad. Maybe if they fix it then it would be fun, although even then I’m really sad the music isn’t better

      yeah this is what i've gathered is quite a few people's issue and that's really unfortunate... I hope they can optimise it for all devices asap. I've only played on my PC which runs great as it's a good Pc, but I highly doubt it would run on my phone either honestly D:
