It's a huge map and I haven't of course flown at all parts of it. So I guess there are worse parts too. The performance was significantly improved after the update on 22nd of February. That made a huge difference in SA + Marianas on my system.

Yeah, the map prices are pretty steep. But apart from that I think this is very interesting area. At least it's not sand... But I'm of course biased as I live in Finland 🙂

Yeah, probably can reach same fps than on other maps by lowering settings. But I made this comparison on same settings to see how Kola performs vs. other maps.

$56 now in EA but yeah, considering bad performance and worse textures than in preview screenshots, too much.

OpenXR toolkit. I also use the toolkit for supersampling. Much better performance in my tests.

The 4 different clips are from: Finland, Finland, Norway, Norway.

All other maps are solid 80fps. It's the Kola map that's badly optimized.

This video was only about the Kola map performance in VR.

Suggest you go fly MSFS instead, grumpy gramps.

Certainly wouldn’t want blowout those digital polygon ears and windows out.

As a Finn I was naturally interested in this map and will be flying it with reduced settings until it's (hopefully) fixed. But I wanted to do this test for others who are interested in how it performs in VR.

i7-14700K/64GB 4080/16GB Rift S

If I had to put them to some order it would roughly be something like this (from best to worst): Caucasus, Persian Gulf, Nevada, Syria, Channel, Sinai, Normandy 2, South America, Marianas, Kola. But note that this is not based on any measurements and is mostly based on my experiences with my previous PC which couldn't run everything as well as my current one. And also DCS has been updated between tests. The 22nd of February 2024 update was a huge improvement in how various maps performed. Marianas used to cause stutters even with my current system before that. After that it's smooth 80 fps.

Your observation and ranking of the rest of the maps is spot on even noticing the gigantic improvement in Marianas with that patch. So this map is a pass for now for me. I trust all your results. Yeah, there's weird shimmering at Rovaniemi airport buildings and in the grass everywhere. It's not that visible in the captured image but on the HMD it's quite annoying. No other map has that. Somehow the trees in Finland look bad too and the tree rendering distance seems lower than with other maps. I have that setting maxed. But some areas in Norway look pretty good especially from higher altitude. But in general this was a huge disappointment. I was really looking forward to this map, and then we get this. Can only hope they improve things later on.

Looks like fsx when orbx first came out... Extremely disappointed....

Sounds a lot like E-Core problem. You can have PL running at background all the time so it can change the settings according to what application is running. PL's performance cost on my system is practically zero.

In my experience Yak-9 can usually outturn 109 G-6 but is ~ equal or worse with earlier 109's. Then there is Yak-9 vs Yak-9T. The 37mm cannon is really powerful but it feels less accurate than the 20mm. Of course when you hit it's pretty much fatal every time. In general Yak-9 feels pretty good in all aspects just like the 109.

This happens when you're alt-tabbed to Process Lasso for longer. I've never seen parked cores when DCS is actually running. But yeah, if you want to disable parking, there's a setting in Process Lasso called Induce Performance Mode, which prevents using E-Cores and parking. So far I've preferred the method shown on the video as I sometimes have DCS on the background when eg. setting up recording for videos.

ParkControl offers these additional functions: A real-time system tray icon showing CPU core parking status Easy access to CPU core parking settings Power profile change notifications People have reported that preventing parking on your cores has an even more visible effect than disabling Ecores. I've not had to use it myself, but if your cores are intermittently grey stopping the parking may be worth looking into.

That exact spot from the FAQ you quoted begins with: "You do not need it [ParkControl], but you may choose to also have it installed." From the same FAQ: "If your system does have ‘open’ power profiles, use the Performance Mode of Process Lasso to disable CPU core parking when important applications are running. To do this, right-click on your target application’s process, then select ‘Induce Performance Mode’." But as I said, in my testing core parking has never been an issue when DCS is running. It only happens when it's at background and you're using some other, not performance hungry, software. And then it's actually the desired behaviour. If you find it causing problems, feel free to use any means you want to prevent it.

Wouldn't power management have a maximum performance profile mode that would achieve the same thing ?

I've found that PL's Power Profile "Bitsum Highest Performance" has a good effect on MSFS but in my testing I can't be sure of DCS. I don't say it isn't helpful but I don't make recommendations I can't be sure of.

You have pretty similar processor affinity menu in the Task Manager. But 1) it doesn't show you E-Cores and P-Cores separately, it just shows them all as a list and 2) AFAIK the changes made there are not persistent and you really don't want to do this every time you run DCS/some other sim. So that's why Process Lasso.

Yeah, just disable E-Cores for DCS and Oculus. Let the rest be as they are. I have been experimenting restricting number of P-Cores to 8 for older sims like RBR. I think it might help with random crashes but I can't say for sure yet.

By default both P-Cores and E-Cores should be enabled. And you just want to disable E-Cores.

I haven't heard that the BIOS way would cause anything bad at least on a PC that's dedicated to sims. If you're also using stuff like Adobe software that have lots of background processes I believe it can make a difference. I was using my old PC for lots of other stuff than simracing and I just had scripts to shut down everything unnecessary when using sims.

​@ahonensimracingsimflying OH that's good. Yeah I built this PC exclusively for flight simulators and a few games, so I should be good. Which is also why I did away with windows defender a little more than a year ago with no issues 😅

Yeah, I've so far dealt with it by using the exclusions mentioned in the video.

I have tried it but did not get consistent results so I didn't recommend it.

I can't find any good translation of Finnish calls by quick googling. And I guess it would be a very long list as there are so many different possible calls. Old school guys used mostly the descriptive notes while modern drivers tend to use number codes. But then there are lots extra words which vary from driver to driver. We had one special call for this stage which was "älä älä". "Älä" itself means "don't cut". But there is a corner with 3 of those orange concrete blocks on inside. Rovanperä's pacenotes are quite interesting as he has a different word for every special condition instead of eg. combining some of the more simple ones. But to remind: calls are always decided by the driver, co-drivers job is to deliver them on time and with good rhythm. And maybe I'm biased but I think she does pretty good job for a 9 year old 🙂 Edit: sorry I just noticed this was a comment to this older video. Thanks! It really is a great plane. For some reason it was the Spitfire that clicked with me instantly from all the warbirds in DCS. I also did a cold start, take off and landing video with it, including some aerobatics.

Agreed that the engine catching is more realistic in DCS. But Il-2 has some good features like the flames (which are maybe a bit overdone but still) and smoke. So I'd say perfect would be a combination of these two :)

You're probably thinking of War Thunder. This is DCS. DCS itself is free but modules (planes, maps etc.) cost.

This is an eternal and pretty worthless debate. I'm very well aware that Messerschmitt used Me as a designation AFTER the company name had changed from Bayerische Flugzeugwerke to Messerschmitt AG. But Bf 109 was designed before that. So both Bf and Me are used in RLM and Luftwaffe documents. So neither one is absolutely right or wrong. I just like to use Bf because that's the original name of the aircraft. We all love the plane so two letters shouldn't be that big deal.
