How to Dry Up a Backyard in Charlotte, NC
In this video, we tackle a homeowner's drainage issues caused by pooling water around their deck and patio. The current gravel installation lacks proper drainage, and a clogged catch basin has led to water retention on the property. Our solution involves installing a catch basin near the downspout, shaping the landscape to direct water flow, and implementing an open French drain along the deck to improve water movement. We'll also address a berm near the fence that’s trapping water and causing pooling. The drainage system will connect multiple catch basins and flow toward the street, ensuring the area stays dry and functional.

This is nearly useless advice unless you can source the dual wall pipe in your area. In st louis, it does not seem to be available anywhere at any price. I would be happy to be proven wrong if you have a distributor.
@@tomjudkins3799 Most of our audience has access, one way or another, to the materials discussed. Call a local irrigation supply house and ask them. You can order FDM single wall online.
I was wondering why not a catch basin is used as an emitter instead of a pop up. there you go! Thanks
I am installing a french drain that I have to drive a 30HP tractor over, and I am in a climate that freezes. Would double-wall perforated HDPE hold up? And do you have a suggestion on what type of rock to fill with? Thanks for the great content!
For French drains, double wall is strong but very slow because the holes are small. FDM 8-Slot Pipe is our go-to. 2" clean round rock/river rock is best. frenchdrainman.com/product/4-in-8-slot-heavy-duty-perforated-pipe/
With 4” corrugated, how do you keep the bottom of the wye from leaking when snapped over? I added wye clean outs on all my downspouts, each one leaks a fair amount of water because of the female wye being over the male corrugated.
also want to know. There's male-female Y pipes that aren't as commonly stocked.
Your videos would be more watchable if they showed the actual work being performed to alleviate the problems.
Where did you get the gasket? I can't find it anywhere...
This is a pretty good video. It shows people the quality of work that you do. 💪
Isn’t sewer pipe schedule 40, which is buried just like a schedule 40 drainage pipe would be…. So brittleness doesn’t seem an issue for sewer drains….
So buy FDM for longevity in a drain pipe😊
Thank you so much for this simple clear video on connecting drain pipes. I'm trying to deal with a problem and was wondering what my options were on joining pipes. !!!
My catch basin, very much like the one you showed in this video, was buried under sod in my yard. Is that normal? By the way, I live in California in the Sacramento valley, meaning we don't get a ton of rain out here, especially during the summer-ish months (4-5 months out of the year).
@@jpiii8887 It's not supposed to be that way but unfortunately is pretty common. Check out French Drain Man turf restrictor catch basin.
The catch basin itself should be buried, but the top/lid should be flush with the surface of your yard and not have anything growing over it. The idea is that it needs to be accessible should you need to open it and clean it out.
💪
Lots of good info. here!
Question, if you don’t have large trees that will clog your down spouts, do you really need these traps?
We recommend it as an access/inspection point at a minimum. Also, you'd be surprised by how far leaves travel in storms. We've had many customers with no big trees within 300 of there home have clogged gutters. Maple helicopters are the worst for traveling. Also, squirrels and other critters can sometimes go into drain systems.
This was beautiful!! Thank you, Sir.
Can you put N12 under a concrete slab?
Yes to under sidewalks, patios, and driveways. If you want more strength, search for "AASHTO certified"
@@drainmylawn Thank you for replying. So kind of you! I'm planning on putting gravel under the pipe. Should I cover the pipe with gravel before pouring the concrete on top or should I pour the concrete around the top and sides of the pipe?
@@sk8guit You're welcome! Gravel is good because it won't settle once it's compacted.
FDM all the way.
Did they do it? Heh
@@DaveAwesome This is an evaluation. We haven't had the opportunity to implement.
@@drainmylawn they should! Look at all that water pooling up. It can make huge holes under your house foundation, which is really not good.
Love your videos. One suggestion if its possible...show the finished work.
@@LIAM_da_LAD110 Thank you! These are our evaluation and design videos. We're working on a good workflow for taking videos of the finished work.
My concern with corrugated is more about standing water and mosquitoes. Is that a valid concern or is it not really a problem?
Does this double wall pipe also come in a perforated version for use as a perimeter drain around basements. Do they make fittings for this style pipe so you can go around corners of a foundation?
I generally don’t comment on videos because I’m here to learn not look like a fool. My plan is using Baughman tile 4” yellow corrugated pipe. It’s a virgin plastic (nothing recycled). There’s 2 downspout’s I’ll be connecting together. Each will have a catch basin(FDM) a few feet after they start running parallel with the ground. They will get connected with a wye and run out to the culvert pipe I have in front of my house. This pipe seems really stiff compared to regular corrugated pipe which is why I bought it. I need a bit of flexibility as well. I know my ground expands and contracts a lot. My neighbor also has a few large trees close to where this is going. I was afraid to use PVC because of all the connections needed for the 85’ run. One crack in and I’ll be right back where I am now. Do you see any problems with this? Located in SE Wisconsin.
Sounds like a solid plan. I only have experience with the 6" Baughman yellow, and it's a good pipe.
@@drainmylawn any recommendations for fill around the pipe itself or just pack it in with dirt?
Sounds like a Good plan. Would love to see some pics when complete!
These might be great products, no doubt, but cost is a factor that maybe wasn’t considered?? I can do the pvc wye setup for 7 down spouts is $150. FDM spout connectors are $377.82 (includes shipping) for 7. That’s roughly 60% more. Not sure there’s that much extra value personally. Looks and a little easier to install. Even installing a catch basin at the end of each spout is cheaper. Let’s face it, the spout connector is nothing more a catch basin that burrito wraps the spout.
@@whatsay8406 Easy maintenance, and clean look matter to our customers. The cost we charge to the customer is the same because of the time savings of such a fast installation.
I'm crying 😭😭😭
I have a down spout that goes to underground rock pit. It's backed up how do I unclog it??
@@siestakeygirl1000 this is a tough situation. There's no way to unclog an underground drain field/rock bed unless it was specifically designed to be serviced. You'll likely have to abandon it and rerun your downspout to a pop up or a servicable feature
I have some area in my yard where a hole is forming, upon inspection the pvc pipe is cracked on the side and washing away the soil to create the hole in the lawn. Question is, after watching your video what is the best way to connect the double wall ADS to the existing pvc pipe so I don’t have to replace the whole length from the downspout to the street, just a section of it?
We would us a PVC to corrugated adapter coupler (female to male) to attach to the double wall. We would then wrap each seam with a blockmyroots.com root wrap. If you want to protect the connection from crushing under heavy loads, you can sleeve it in a 6" double wall or PVC segment.

One of the many reasons I can’t stand HOAs. What is the point of paying HOA fees if they say the storm drain infrastructure is your responsibility to fix. That is crazy.
Exactly. I hope this family is able to get the HOA or developer to take care of it now rather than after a fight.
Kenneth and the office team at Drain my Lawn are super professional. I called with a few simple questions only to have Kenneth arrive at my home just a few hours later (not expecting a response like that) for which he not only answered "All" of my questions yet took the time to create a catered plan to address each of my home's needs with several different options. The next day I was sent not only a schematic of the proposed project, a cost breakdown with variations yet he also shot a video of what we discussed and what the work would entail. How about…. A elbow with a slotted catch basin lid as a intake?
i use duct tape, i mean, your just getting it tight to set in ground, then dirt will do its job and settle. by the time the duct tape dies, years, soil will be a sealant.
