I was fortunate to be wowed by this at the beginning of the season. I've listened to the recording countless times; the music is a marvel. Ralph's percussion writing for this show expressed power to beauty, suspense to romance. The interplay between the different sections is exquisite. What the kids play these days is incredible, but I think this was the epitome of artistic, sophisticated marching percussion writing.
While the theme was the same between both years, the musical selections were different along with the arrangements. For instance, the opening in 1988 wasn’t the chromatic scale we know as the opening to Phantom of the Opera like it was in 1989. 🙂
I'm not going to lie. This show was pretty darn good. The Phantom of The opera music is already good. I would love to see a more recent marching band production of this that is GOOD.
This show won DCI, but the '88 version won everyone's hearts. This is culmination of 80's style. Star's show in '90 broke open a new realm of possibility in hornline difficulty and staging.
I saw this show my freshman year of highschool at dci south in Birmingham, Al. I was so amazed at this show and loved scv, we all did. Amazing, I was a drummer bass and snare later on.
Man I wish I was alive to see this live 🙁 DCI and phantom of the opera are two of my favorite things!! Beautiful as always, and never fails to bring me to tears!! ❤
My drumline instructor all throughout high school was the end snare. She was an intense teacher and got the maximum results from us. I've always been jealous of her that she marched such an epic and beautiful show.
Jealous you knew someone that marched in this incrediblel show. I marched in 1981 with the SkyRyders, but this is the best all time performance in my mind.
This is still the benchmark. I want to drums along the rockies 2024 and none of the current band are even close to this... not even in the conversation.
These are not Drum Corps, they are bands, they cannot compare with Riley Raiders, Yankee Rebels, Scout house The Princemen, The Hurricanes, Gay Blades, Connecticut Yankees, Skyliners The Sunrisers and the list goes on. They didn't need Vibes, Trombones, Guitars and extensive systems and all the other crap. The only true Drum and Bugle Corps that still exist is The Marine Drum and Bugle Corps from 8th & I Barracks.
This was before amplification and trombones... and these guys had a super clean company front at the end...... but that's ok. You can still be an angry old man.
Where are the silly poses and massive props? No scatter drill? And the hats are getting in the way of the performer's faces. I'm not seeing a whole lot of emoting from the performers. A truely sad show only for dinosaurs!
Do want to a grown man cry at such beauty. I am 64 years of age and have been a fan of DCI since I was a teenager. I was privileged to see this show live.
My dad turned me onto this. Between this and Madison Scouts 1988 Malaguena! Wow. Wish I could travel back in time. Personally not down with all the electronics and vocals.
They got jobbed in 1988. This 1989 version was payback for a piss poor decision. Madison’s 1988 iconic 7 plus minute Malagueña was not the show SCV or Devils had Nothing Madison did brought emotion other than the loud ending. SCV show had me in tears
@@fortyfive_ doesn't make a drum corps not a band. It falls in the Venn diagram of bands. Band: a group of persons, animals, or things especially : a group of musicians organized for ensemble playing. Ergo, it's a band by definition, and since it's a marching organization, it's a marching band.
1991 who sits, 1984 cadets? Learn, before you speak. These just now are repeating. Ask Gail royer
1987 cadets,
Oops,
Thankfully, this show is somewhat Real, not too many gimmicks
It's not, your just emotional

When DCI was still worth watching. I miss these shows. I’m disappointed my kids will never get to see a brilliant show.
I saw it live it was nuts
I 2nd that
The greatest show of all time.
Not sure as a hornline member I could be interested in playing the same show 2 years in a row tbh but it is a very excellent show.

TAKE IT HOME SANTA CLARA

This show bangs.
I saw them perform this at dci south back in 1990
Nope. In 1990 they played Carmen. If you saw this it was in 1989...
I was there, on the field 35 years ago! Feels like reliving a really cool dream watching it now. Myron Rosander and Gail Royer are somewhere smiling.
I saw this show my freshman year of highschool at dci south in Birmingham, Al. I was so amazed at this show and loved scv, we all did. Amazing, I was a drummer bass and snare later on.
This is the best show from start to finish...of all DCI drum corps. Perfection on so many levels! Give credit where credit is due.
. , i remember the "Phantom Voice" of Phantom Regiment they d same masterpiece and very kind of music...
This is the good stuff, kids. 👍

True artistry in sound and in motion.
After all these years, still goosebumps all over. "Brava, brava, bravissima"
So much better than today’s dci that spend more time dancing around their instruments (that are placed on the field) than actually playing music.
As someone born in 2007, I actually agree with this, and that probably explains my fascination with 90s/2000s cavaliers
This is still the benchmark. I want to drums along the rockies 2024 and none of the current band are even close to this... not even in the conversation.
True
My high school marching band show is also based on the Phantom of the Opera
the absolute best company front ever by any drum corps before or since.
Amen! It’s bone chilling and brings tears to your eyes! AWESOME!
Insane! Just tingles up the spine and goosebumps. That is how you do a company front!

当時、もの凄く感動したのを思い出しました。確かSCVは2年連続でオペラ座の怪人の怪人だったかと SCVのプライド見たなーと思っていましたm(_ _)m
Arguably one of the best DCI shows ever, right there with the 95 & 2001 Cavaliers.
Where are the silly poses and massive props? No scatter drill? And the hats are getting in the way of the performer's faces. I'm not seeing a whole lot of emoting from the performers. A truely sad show only for dinosaurs!
9:46 has gotta be one of the prettiest sounds any drum corps has ever made
For YEARS, SCV had THE best backfield sound...
The sound, plus me being a total sucker for all I ask of you, makes this moment just an instant tearjerker for me. This show is such a gem
The backfield sound is gorgeous for sure, but that hit at 10:27 gets me every single time.
...and that subtle, sweet bass drum roll is a loving kiss on top of it all; the entire corps sound still makes me swoon after all these years!
i wish somebody made a transcription of this show
Listen! Those are Contra Basses! No need for amplification…
Curt Gowdy was such a blithering moron. He ruined the PBS broadcast with his ignorant blathering.
I will fight anyone who disagrees that this is probably the best show of DCI history. It changed the show style of drum corps forever
Do want to a grown man cry at such beauty. I am 64 years of age and have been a fan of DCI since I was a teenager. I was privileged to see this show live.
Nah, cadets off Bergen county, Les mis is the best and i'll fight anyone on that.
2000 cavaliers is probably my favorite, but god this show is one of the best
What about 1988?
@AntecorSound cadets from that year was top notch too!
My favorite SCV show ever!!!
My dad turned me onto this. Between this and Madison Scouts 1988 Malaguena! Wow. Wish I could travel back in time. Personally not down with all the electronics and vocals.
This show is nearly 40 years old and I still wanna know how they did the magic trick at 11:22
35 years later and I still don't know how they made that guy disappear at the end. 🤔🤷🏻♂️😂
Saw this live when I was five, I still love it
34 years later, still a landmark show for me. Exquisite,.powerful, enotional.

If they were hosed in 88 then Phantom was hosed in 89. PR 89 will go down as the greatest show to not win.
Thank you so much for posting this. It warms my nostalgic ass heart. Trying to indoctrinate my kid into loving marching band as much as I did.
Dude. This isn’t marching band. Christ
I would pay real money and the souls of my family to have seen this show live.
That pop from the crowd as SCV makes their final push toward the crowd is goosebumps. LOVE IT
It was breathtaking, even at the beginning of the season.
It was stunning.
I was there.
I was there. It still gives me chills.
Still my favorite... to this day!
The ending always gets me, remember watching this show in my “hell week” for marching band.
It’s not a band… it’s a drum corps
Which is a specific type of marching band for you pedantic types.
@@anthonykaiser974 a marching band has woodwinds, a drum corps doesnt

Classiest and probably the most influential on the average HS band kid show in all of DCI history.
