Christmas Accordian Sketchbooks in Watercolor
Simple & easy watercolor designs for a cute Christmas watercolor sketchbook! You can get ready made accordian books from Hahnemuhle (their Zig zag book is perfect for this) on Amazon. There's other's out there, too, availability varies at times.
This size book (and the topic of Christmas & winter themes) are fun to bring out all the metallic paints, iridescent paints, markers, etc. Even a bit of masking fluid and tape can be fun to use...making these simple pages all the more special.
Paint your Christmas tree, or one you've dreamed of! Topics such as Christmas ornaments and toys, a walk in winter woods, winter garments, holiday foods, all are fun subjects for this tiny sketchbook!
You can make beautiful covers for your book with either fabric or 'art paper' (you can find at stores like 'Jerry's Artarama', etc.). Ribbons can be put in place underneath the fabric or paper cover to be used as a tie to hold your pages shut in an elegant way. I've used mod-podge in the past, and also acrylic medium (which I think I prefer). Spread evenly. Use a brayer to get out all the air bubbles before it dries. You can even apply a coating of the acrylic medium on the outside of the paper cover you've just 'glued on' to protect the surface. (though I wouldn't paint over the fabric, it might mar the finish/surface of the fabric).
They make sweet gifts for loved ones or a memory book just for yourself!

What's in my Autumn pleinair Sketch Bag?
Переглядів 53Місяць тому
When the air in 'pleinair' starts getting colder, I want my sketching and painting sessions to be shorter....but I still want to get out there and make art in the great outdoors. How do I stay happy In doing this? By keeping things light, simple, and as few supplies as possible (but still have everything I possibly need). Perpetual Nature Journals - in Watercolor Sketchbooks- why I love this idea.

My last several teaching gigs with our local Audubon center, I've been sharing this concept of the 'Perpetual Nature Journal'. It's the perfect idea for someone who wants to keep a sketchbook on a regular basis, but "life frequently gets in the way". Once you set it up, you can keep coming back to these for several years....or as long as it takes to fill it! I've found there's times when I love...

Watercolor paintings - Glass or no glass when you frame your painting?
Переглядів 113Рік тому
Here's why I no longer use glass to frame, hang, and display my watercolor paintings..... I just hated dealing with heavy glass...and then there's the glare. For a couple decades, I painted in oils, as I didn't want anything to separate me from the artwork; no glass, no mat, etc. I just wanted to be able to see the 'artist's hand' in the work. With the technique I learned many years ago while a...

I think she’s beautiful, but maybe as the ballerina not an angel. You called those sleeves and I assumed they were her wings.
So lovely Roxanne! Thanks for sharing these.
Thanks Karen!! I had hoped to get this posted much sooner....that 'short season' did me in! ha!! Merry Christmas to you and your family!! 😀
Very fun in going to t
Hope you enjoy it Deborah - these are a lot of fun!!
I LOVE your use of watercolor and fountain pen ink!!!
Thank you sooo much!! They are both a lot of fun, and together - even better!! 😀
Beautiful work.
Thank you!! 😀
Thank you, Roxanne, I will start one THIS WEEK! Love what you’ve done in remembrance! Kathryn
Thank you, Roxanne, I will start one THIS WEEK! Love what you’ve done in remembrance! Kathryn
Thanks Kathryn!! I think this is the most FUN version (with the least pressure) of a way of keeping this sort of thing!! I'm looking forward to having a few years go by and see what fills it up!! Should be interesting - lots to look forward to ...just a tiny bit at a time!! 😀
I love your idea of keeping a record like that. Love your paintings too!!
Thanks Janice!! I think I especially like it because of the 'no pressure mentality!" There's times when I have a LOT of time to do this ...and sometimes life just gets in the way!!! 😀
I love the colors you used. I was worried this pen would be too high maintenance because of staining/rotting so returned it but found out they just launched shorter nip holders in beautiful colors like forest green and red. So I can’t wait to try them out.
Wow, I'll have to go check out the new ones...How pretty. Yes, this nib is really nice (and I should use it more often!). I like the variable line you can get with it!!
@@roxannesteed4675 I did like that aspect of it when I tried the tester in the store. So it does seem very versatile. As far as the issues I mentioned, they told me the nip holders are coated so maybe it isn’t a problem after all?
@@vonettadevo I don't think it would be a problem. I'm only dipping the nib into the ink and not the wood handled holder. Even if it gets wet when I'm cleaning it...I'm not laying it in water to soak in there...so I think it will hold up a long time!! (years and years!!) I always try to take good care of my equipment..) 🙂
Hello Roxanne, I am subscriber 445. :) I would love to see you paint a loose angel on white paper. I have bookmarked this angel to give it a go. Thank you.
Thanks Deb! At some point soon I will - (after I get home from teaching in Italy)!!😄

Nice video - lovely travel sketches!! Thanks. My favorite travel bag - Nomadic's NW-05 Wise-walker Shoulder bag. Has so many zips and organization, lightweight cross body - can carry all day and holds lots of sketching materials - and all my purse items too.
Thanks Laura! I'm going to check that one out....I'm getting down to the wire before my next trip...and still looking for that 'holy grail' of a bag!! Thanks for suggesting this!
Use that same pallet I also add colors in as well. 😊👍
I was glad it was so easy to glue those half or whole pans in!!! "nobody has to get left behind"😂
Chock full of helpful instructions for paints and palettes. A bit long but worth every minute of it! I learned so much and I'm off to fill my palette more confidently now! Thank you, Roxanne.
Thanks Martha!! Yes, it's a longish one! Glad you found it helpful though! :-D Thanks for commenting!!
Lkve the sketch book tour, your paintings in then are fabulous. Your very talented 😍😍
Thanks so much for your kind response!! 😀
Helpful overview!
Thanks Barbara! I'm so glad you found it helpful! If you ever have a watercolor topic you'd like some answers on, let me know!
Really enjoyed your video. I am a senior newbie. I subscribed, can't wait to watch more videos!
Thanks for joining in!!! I'm so glad you enjoyed this, and hopefully found it helpful! If you run into any questions as you continue in your watercolor journey, you can drop them into any of the comments to my videos. I'm always looking for helpful topics to film!
Thank 😊 you very much!
I bought the same black paper a while back and I have various cheap metallic paints. I painted along and it was so much FUN! I'm gong to do this agin!
YAY Rita!!! I'm so glad you tried it out!!! I had a blast trying out several different things..Anything that would make the paint a little bit opaque...even just adding titanium white gouache or watercolor paint to regular paint or the metallics, can make it really stand out on the black! Thanks for letting me know how much you enjoyed it!! 😀

Can't wait to give this a try! It's a beautiful effect.
Thanks Karen - and there's so many ways you can use it, too!!
What fun! These are great!
Thanks Carol! I have to admit - it was a LOT of fun!! And fun in our class Facebook group to see what everyone did with these ideas!! 😀
I like that border-just two lines with color in between. I’m making a mental note of that!
Thanks Arlene!! And the nice thing is - there are so many variations of it, too!! (Perhaps I should make a short tutorial of those, too!!) 😀
Where is this class? Cost? The FB link doesn't work.
oh gosh....thanks for letting me know about the link. I teach on Zoom, and have a new 6-week session starting next Tuesday.. here's a link to the class: www.roxannesteed.com/studio-classes-1 and now I'll go check the links within the paragraphs above!! @@roxannesteed4675 $150....ouch! I'll have to pass. Good luck with your class. I hope it goes well and everyone has fun.
@@violettahaven3706 (it's actually quite a bargain for the depth of material and scope of the class - each class is 3 hours long, so that breaks down to $25/class or a little over $8 an hour....not even minimum wage). Thank you!! Flowers are the ultimate cheer-me-up!! :-D (well, besides coffee & chocolate chip cookies!)
Sometimes I ink first and sometimes after painting, but I almost always use ink because I work in small sketchbooks so ink lines make more of a “pop” in a small-scale picture. Also, I am a fountain pen afficionado and collector (have that very Lamy Safari) and I like to use different color inks. I am just about to go out to meet some art friends and we are going to paint sunflowers for Ukraine. I will use De Atramentis Document Urban Sienna (a light brown and waterproof) for my ink lines. And I will show the girls your video.
Wow- thanks Arlene!! I'm a Lamy Safari fan, too!!! I love those things! Seems like any other pen (even if its good looking) is disappointing compared to the old reliable Safari! I haven't tried the Urban Sienna, but I've used the De Atramentis Document ink in Brown, Black, and orange. I even tried mixing some orange with the brown to get a more 'sienna' warm tone....it's okay, but I think I may explore more of their pre-mixed colors...and get another Lamy Safari from Goulet pens!!! (my favorite pen source). Once you're hooked, it's hard to go back to any other pen...but I do now and then just for experimentation sake...or for a class demo. Have fun painting with your friends, and tell them I said, "Hi"!! Ukraine is in my thoughts all the live-long day.
Thank you for sharing. I like this technique of not inking everything thing, although I find it hard to stop once I start! Will try this next time🙂
Thanks Sue! haha- I know that feeling of wanting to ink everything!!! It's so meditative...I seriously just love the feeling of sitting there lining everything in. I swear, it lowers my blood pressure leaves me feeling peaceful, yet happy and energized!
I’m writing this for my G ma Chang. English is not her first language and we were watching this vid together so she asked me to comment for us both. Here it is … hands down this is the best, and most inspiring tutorial we have seen! We are both inspired and are confident to get into creation mode! Love Emiko and Chang 💖🤗🥰💕
Aww- thank you so much - both Emily and Chang! I'm so happy you enjoyed the video. I hope you'll continue painting and sketching and that it brings you joy...and fun times together! Thanks for your kind words! 😀
Thanks for always inspiring me to paint!
You are very welcome Sue! I love talking about all things painting!! 😀
This may help inspire me here in PA with similar weather. Otherwise, I just may hibernate for the next couple of months.
I know what you mean!! I did that for years up here in CT before a friend suggested this! This actually makes me look forward to doing these simple sketches, quickly...and painting back at home in my cozy place. It was like for the first time I didn't 'hate winter'!! ;-D Let me know if it works for you, too!!! Best wishes & happy painting!!
I have some shimmers on order. I cant wait to get them now!! Loved this!
YAY!! Thanks for letting me know!! These angels are so much fun, and turn out a little different each time you do them! I hope you enjoy the process! I'm trying out some other designs that might be fun....little Christmas ornaments!!
Excellent tip! Thank you for sharing.
Very helpful tip. I've liked and subscribed to your channel. I hope to see more videos from you. Maybe one of the christmas light gift tags or the cute little mouse in your journal with the coat. I'm actually trying to find a video on a rat for my granddaughter that was born under the rat sign of the Chinese calendar, as was I. Love that I found your channel. Thank you.
Thanks so much Carolyn!! I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos! I'll be out of the studio for Thanksgiving weekend, but I do have so fun ideas to start filming next week! Just got the conklin herringbone fountain pen, orange is by far the best color ever
Isn't it fun?!?!? 😀
Love this! My art trip to France has been postponed twice and hope by next August/ Sept. we can travel safely. On my 2 past trips I used a square Pentalic (5x5”) which makes a 10” landscape and also used a pocket Stillman and Birn. Adding the sketch journal so enhances a trip!
I love those soft cover Stillman & Birn's! I haven't used a square format book yet, but I keep looking for one! I like the shape when they are opened! I think you should be good for a trip next year. I've had 4 friends just come back from travel over there, and aside from the paperwork to get there...they actually felt safer over there than in the US! I'm getting super-excited about my upcoming trip to Italy!! :-D

Thanks so much!! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos!! My favorite travel brushes I've had for several years now (and the labels are worn off of them). But they are the DaVinci Cosmotop, one in a size 6 & the other in a size 10. Those two are the most versatile and I could pretty much rely on them ALL the time!! A few years ago I added a size 8 to the trio, it's hair is a little different - (supposedly closer to sable, even though it's a synthetic hair- and I like that, too). I also have a small Silver Brush brand, but the hair doesn't have enough 'snap' for my liking. It's okay, some folks love them. I recently got an Escoda Versatil in a size 12 that I'm going to be trying out en plein air. I have another one of their brushes I use in my studio that I like a lot. Carries a lot a liquid, but is a really nice synthetic. I have some of these listed in my online store if you'd like to have a look: www.roxannesteed.com/supplies
