This is a rider review of a 2008 Honda Goldwing. A friend offered the use of his Goldwing for this review. I rode Mike's Goldwing over the course of 3 days getting the feel of the bike and learning its strengths and weaknesses. Overall it's a great bike, well-designed and built. It's very comfortable to ride. I think for big open highways there's no better bike. Goldwings are known for their lo...

Are you still using your DIY Air Compressor?
Yes sir I am. Have you seen my video of it?
@@blackswanodysseys Yes I did, am inspired to make my own now!
My cousin talked about hiking the lost coast along the beaches and whatnot. He says gotta watch out for high tide you'll get trapped
As a guy who rode a Harley with a lean angle of 28 degrees for years, I have no issues with the lean angle on my 2013 Gold Wing. It's like night and day in comparison and more than enough for me. If I wanted to drag a knee in a corner I'd get a sport bike.
100% agree. Since my video I've had a chance to ride other Goldwings and noted way more lean angle.
Short answer.. NO. I have a manual pump. Works every time....
Those small cartridges would probably do ok on a small scooter tire.
I literally started searching for this very subject on transferring GoPro media directly to an external drive due to the amount of large file/long recording media taken during my motorcycle rides, as well as hikes. I'm still a relatively new GoPro user and haven't figured out how to edit videos on my Mac, just my phone (which is Samsung, not Apple) - and the large amounts of media are clogging up my phone. Thanks for this helpful video!
2008 owner here. I have no issues 10 to 20 over in curves. Not sure why he’s scraping so much. I love my 07 Fatboy but Man this GW is made for the road, I can ride it all day and have plenty of fun on the way.
I’ve left a many Harley setting still in speed. And I’ve noticed you not riding in overdrive. One more thing, set a nickel on the motor at idle and see if it moves. Just a okay review. Hoosier Wing.
I am on my third Goldwing and I like it better than my Ninja 1000. The Wing is a very versatile motorcycle, sporty when you want it, all day when needed and pack up mom and the trailer for cross country. Make the sound better, there are aftermarket pipes but I cheated and drilled holes in the back of the muffler by the outlet and it actually sounds great. Thanks be safe, have fun. I get 40 when not riding hard. If I am being sporty I will get 35-38 depends on the area
I too drilled out the pipes of my Concours 14 👍
@@blackswanodysseys The Wing responds well to this. The tips hides the holes.
all i learnt from this is you are a crap rider, with misinformation .👎
I have a 2008 and have put 33,000 miles on it. Great bike.
Miniture bicycle pump 😉
I wish these big bikes didn’t have those lean angle warning sensors!! Used to have that issue on my Kaw. Vulcan 1500 too!
Helpful video
4 mins to inflate, seems good! Seems like a good tool to have on-board. Thx for the video.
Sounds good.. I have 3 airmotos but they’re 100 each
What is a “airmoto”?
Been using these for a few years. They NEVER come out on their own. I don’t think this guy puts them in far enough. They work amazingly well.
Are you talking about the ECU getting re-flashed? Not sure what you meant about dyno-tuning.
Yes
What an asshole
Very nice and informative review. I just bought a 2009 with 39K miles last week and looking forward to many adventures ahead. Safe travels!
Thank you. Let us know what modifications are on the bike and what you may add
I hear more fear laden B.S. about marijuana grows. Here is a tip form a California dirt biker/hunter. You will never see a grow site from the road. I’ve ridden dirt bikes for 40 years in the mountains of California and find if you stay on the designated trails like you are supposed to do you will never find a grow site. Growers are smarter than that.
Great video. Always good information to hear. The best thing I ever learned about this, is to just relax. Relax your grip. Relax your shoulder, back, and gluts. The bike will “walk” a bit, as it tracks along the gratings, but will go in the direction that you steer. Always look to where you want to go, which means, you won’t be looking down. Cross winds? Often tricky, but like the narrator, I have never been blown out of my lane. Good stuff on this channel. Thanks for the content! Ride safe!
So helpfull !!! i did it in a minute! thanks a lot
Hoy, good review. I'm buying my first Goldwing Saturday ! It's a 2007 and I'm really looking forward to it. I currently ride a 2005 Harley Electra Glide. It gets on average 32 miles per gal, hwy miles with premium gas. I've been riding Harleys since 1979 so this it s going to be very intresting.
Thank you James, let us know, here, how your new ride is going
A definite Goldwing noob question here but, how do all those electronics perform when caught in the rain with the bike? Surely the bike is made with that in mind but is it better to avoid the rain or can you just keep riding through multiple rain exposure and they will just hold up? A question for anyone willing to answer. Thank you.
@amphileneo, I haven't any direct experience riding a GW in rainy weather. I know all the electronics are tucked behind the windscreen and fairing, so there is no direct water impact. Also, Honda has deeply engineered the Gold Wing for long miles. There are very few recalls or repair issues throughout the model's history. One item electrical-wise I found in a search was Notorious Sticky Handlebar Switches motorandwheels.com/problems-honda-gold-wing/.
I think the suspension is set way too soft, or, it’s not working properly. That touching is very uncharacteristic of the Goldwing. Very fair review.
Actually the Honda Trail 125 weighs 257 pounds, rather than "200 pounds, max" but it is still a light bike.
I would rather listen to the honda whinning than this twit.
Dear blackswan, i need help about 396. I will be greatfull if you can help. I formatted internal device of unit. I tried everything, but non of tham works. at least now i can see the internal drive on pc. But i need an image file any of a new 396 device. Can you please share the image of the internal drive of zumo 396? kind regards
I’m at work right now but will look into your question tonight
@@blackswanodysseys thank you so much
Cagdas, when you say you "formatted internal device" are you talking the removable micro SD card?
@@blackswanodysseys hi, i am afraid not :). I mean the main internal drive, its about 14 gb space
@@CagdasCOLAK Also, will you unit power on? If so what is stated on the screen?
That is a fine Sports Tourer. The Grey colour looks good on it.
Can you say what those Sidi boots are like size wise please. Would I need to go a size up int hem or are they normal fit? They look like a good boot to me.
I find that Sidi tend to run narrow. My Sidi is size 12. Most other shoes and boots 11.5 fits me.
@@blackswanodysseys Thank You. I like Sidi gear. That helps a lot.
@@dezmondwhitney1208 Let us know what you end up with
@@blackswanodysseys I am using work boots for next few weeks. I think I will go for Sidi. Good stuff from my experience. Thanks.
This video is most helpful. I ride in the UK, mostly day rides out and back. So far I have been fortunate enough not to have a puncture, but here, road surfaces are getting worse through lack of up keep. I now carry a cigar lighter socket powered small compressor in my top box. Thanks for a really helpful video.
Saved me $40. Thanks.
The usual useless corporate shit
Very hard to plot out a route. It works good if you don't care where it takes to between the start point and the end point. But if you want to take certain routes,, hang it up.
Yes that unfortunately is so true.
The Honda Gold Wings is just that ! The "GOLD STANDARD" in a world full of wanna be long distance cruisers. So, that being said, why do you try to compare it to any other bike NOT in it's league. Example: Little league baseball ⚾️ player -vs- Major league player. 😂
Great!
riding with a high beam in traffic?
During day yes
@@blackswanodysseys Cage drivers up here in PNW are Nucken Futs and a biker needs all the help to be seen. Even then......."I didn't see him."
It's a treacherous characteristic of asphalt that it seems to deteriorate most drastically in the areas shadowed by the trees, making the worst pot holes hard to see because they are camouflaged as shadows. That road from the park to Honeydew is a little arduous on a road bike. Don't know about beginners, but definitely not for anyone with a weak physical constitution.
But a beautiful ride though. Hope to ride it again soon
2023 bmw 1250 rt 30k$ vs 2008 Honda Goldwing 10k$?
Excellent video! You just saved me some space in my tool kit. In addition to a compressor, I have been carrying 3 CO2 cartridges which I now know is a waste of space!
Glad it helped
I love them 🤷🏻♂️ bought the normal ones not the pros though. Great af.
Hi John here I love the goldwings from 2001 to 2010 the 2012 to 2017 after than I do not the ones after 2017
Thanks
Hi. Good long review, but need to clarify a few things. I have a 2008 Airbag, which is what you reviewed. There were 4 main levels of GL1800, ABS brakes came on the top two, and the airbag model was the top model with included better stereo, ABS brakes, navigation, and comfort package. It sold for about $25k in 2008. You can zoom in and out on the GPS on the fly with left handle controls. A great feature of the GPS is that you can push a button on the left hand control and get verbal instructions of your next maneuver. CB radio did not go out in the 80s. Truckers still use it, and it would be a good way to get help on highways. I'm a ham operator, and I'm glad I have a CB on my wing instead of 2 meters or 70 cm radios, which almost seems dead on the highways. Our airbag wings weigh about 920 pounds dry. The rear shock is oil filled, and the preload adjusts spring compression. I had to put more oil in the reservoir to get full extension of the preload, so maybe that bike needs more oil in the rear shock, which might be why you were scraping pegs on some not-so-bad curves. The front suspension changed away from telescopic forks in 2018. Thanks.
Good info. Thx
All the clarifications I was going to add after watching this excellent review. I would also add that gas mileage goes down significantly when you go past 4K rpm. The 'no-touchy while riding' rule for the GPS is obviously the result of over active lawyers - you can hack this to use the reversing switch to allow changes to the nav without pulling over to the kerb (surely more dangerous). I just did a 5000 mile trip in the US on mostly two lane highways with speeds up to 80mph. Excellent gas mileage. Once I hit the big freeways and, um, went a couple of tens faster, the gas mileage dropped significantly. As someone who also owns a R1250GS, I cannot emphasize enough the real comfort of the GL1800 for 6-8 hours riding, stopping only to gas up and grab a quick snack.
Great review!
Nice review and a great period for the Wings. But some of us have no need of the tech stuff on newer Bikes. Best to focus on and enjoy the ride and not be busy with modern devices. Probably the best powerplant on a vehicle. Yep they even have car hauler (towing systems) for the Wings to pull a car. And CB is still a thing and that's okay. It's quicker than anyone needs.
Many seem to think this is something you use to put pressure in your tires and ride the rest of the season. It is not the use case. This is a long-term storable and very stable way to have a way to reinflate a tire to get you out of a problem situation. Once you're out of that situation you either replace the tire if needed, or release the CO2 and then re-inflate with proper air. This is not something you use to top your tires off of we're going on a regular ride. A larger more durable air compressor should be kept at home or used at a local facility like fuel station or vehicle shop if you have access. I think CO2 is a fantastic idea with near indefinite storage to keep on your motorcycle for those problem times that you may or may not run into. The battery operated ones are nice if they get somewhat of a regular use, but you still have one additional item to worry about maintaining and keeping charged. Not to mention extreme heat or extreme cold degrades and could potentially damage the battery depending on what type is used. Using a pump that is powered by the motorcycle would make more sense to me, but depending on your specific motorcycle and what additional electrical add-ons you have, it could cause excess strain on the charging system and potentially lead to more serious concerns with the bike. Obviously the likelihood of that is very low but that has to be measured by the individual when deciding what type of system you would like to have.
Came to this video after watching your CO² cartridge video, and i just want to say both are amazing and you absolutely deserve my subscription! On my 2007 suzuki boulevard, it would only take me 5 cartridges power tire to get to pressure so i went that route vs this pump, considering i could fit all cartridges in the little tool conpartment and leave my bags empty- something i couldnt do with a pump. Both are amazing videos though, and THANK YOU for testing the CO² cartridges because all i coukd find were estimated psi for bicycles and had to roughly calculate tire volume and psi per cartridge- which ended up being 4.97psi. Great insight on both videos and as a newer rider i hope to learn a lot from you
Thank you. If and when my job settles back down i hope to produce more
I just picked up a 2008 black abs with only 5000 miles. Checked the vin and had the brake recall still incomplete so i dropped it off at the dealer and they are working on it. Cant wait to have it back.
