    It was the spectators fault not the rally drivers. If you had half a brain you learn which curve to stand on or which corner a car might go off on. Fast corners are fun but be up high It's because they can't drive. For spectators to stand mid stage on a dangerous corner is stupid.we had whistles to warn the car approaching and we used to shout car!!! It's all about inertia you know.

    Still in my top ten cars I want to own I believe if group B lasted another few years I believe the 6r4 would have been turbo charged ie engine that ended up in the Xj220.

      He was pretty intense back then. He's mellowed out heaps since retirement. What I find interesting in this clip was Frank had an idea about the benefits of tuning vortices to his advantage but the research into Computer Flow Dynamics was still a ways off.

    I feel sorry for cash strapped Austin Rover, they just underestimated the massive advance in turbo engines, left foot braking, which more than made up for their turbo lag against the normally aspirated metro, You can hear Tony Pond describing how the metro was 6 secs a mile quicker than any other car on the metros maiden voyage at some local rally, and Tony said, "has to be about 3 secs faster then the quattro", proving that Austin Rover had the 360 hp LWB quattro in mind when they built the Metro. despite the maestro David Wood and Williams GP racing team doing almost, if not all the difficult engine, chassis stuff, the Group B monsters that spawned in 1983/84/85/86 left the poor Metro leaving Group B rallying after 1 1/2 years with not a single world championship win.

    The problem was that the engine was fundamentally flawed. It was very unreliable & suffered a variety of problems throughout its "works" usage. David Wood had a racing/technical background & no experience of the rigor's of top level rallying & made no allowances for this with the engine regularly suffering terminal damage due to stones & debris being ingested into the cam-belt system. Another problem was that the guy in charge had no real idea on how to run a competition department & was running his own agenda which ultimately led to him spending time on an enforced holiday at her majesty's pleasure.

    This video neatly highlights everything that was wrong with late 90's supertouring. The rate of development was crazy and totally unsustainable. The Cavalier was only two years old at the time. The manufacturers were allowed to change too much on the cars, the fact that the guy says that the engine was 'in the wrong place' speaks volumes.

    Why is the Vectra left-hand drive if it's a) a Vauxhall and b) driving in the BTCC?

    • @dtmfan
      @dtmfan 9 років тому

      I have no proove, but lets share my theory. Opel was already running a Super Touring Car (Opel Vectra) in Germany for a few years, after the old DTM died. So when Vauxhall retired the Cavalier, it was probably easier, to grab the already existing Vectra (and to take advantage of the made experience with the car) from Germany and just re-brand it. But as i said, i have no proove for that, but if i would have been a higher-up at Vauxhalls at those days, i would also not have had a car re-built completely, just for steering wheel fittings and other details.

      Ian Harrison (Triple Eight owner) said they prefer to you use left cars as it allows a better field of view around most corners on the clockwise circuits on the BTCC calender. They are still doing the same in their current MG machines

      dtmfan The BTCC Vectra was well known for using the STW aero package, just like the 406 - it's why they struggled.

    Really, a very flawed Groub B rallycar, mainly because of the engine. Hopelessly slow against the competition, especially against the likes of the 205 Turbo 16 or the Delta S4 which were the fastest of these monsters.

    • @arriviste2020
      @arriviste2020 10 років тому

      400bhp from a naturally aspirated engine is not good? Considering that the engine was never fully developed makes your statement flawed. So how many other cars was it hopelessly slow against? Tony Pond and others demonstrated the potential of the car. I should imagine that you were one of the many that slagged off Paddy Hopkirk's efforts in the Monte Carlo,driving a Mini Cooper....just another "very flawed and underpowered" vehicle..You really are mediocre.
