Government Employees: Don’t make this tax mistake with gratuity/lump sum
I’m tired of seeing hard-working government employees lose hundreds of thousands to SARS-simply because they don’t fully understand the tax laws.
R100,000!
That’s how much extra Paul, a government employee, lost to SARS because of a tax mistake on his gratuity.
The strange part? Paul thought he had done everything right.
• He started planning almost a year before his retirement.
• He calculated his tax carefully.
But when his payout arrived, it was over R100,000 less than expected-and there was nothing he could do to fix it.
In my latest video, I’m pulling back the curtain to show you exactly how tax is calculated on your gratuity or true 1/3rd lump sum.
• The #1 mistake government employees make with their tax planning
• How to avoid overpaying SARS
• A step-by-step guide to get it right the first time
Don’t let your hard-earned money slip away. Watch this video now and take control of your tax planning.

I am not in agreement with your comments as medical aid subsidy received by the GEPF after retirement is not taxable as a fringe benefit (code 4493)

Grt video 😮
Grt vedeo indeed. We need more of this going foward
Retirement issues need a financial advisor always 🙏
Essentially advice for retirement planning.... especially on tax savings to have more to invest 🙏. I will definitely recommend you to friends and family.
I so need to see him but can't see the email address
@thokomhlongo, email retirewell@retiresa.co.za
very informative thanks when you say approved fund what does this mean ? good to know where you can invest not necessarily mentioning names of companies ....just so one can make an informed decision about investments options. can you do a video on shariah complaint investments for Muslims if possible. thanks
@farida, the approved fund options must be done during a personal consultation because once you choose them it cannot be changed. We do have a video for Muslim individuals and for investing any of our investment videos will work and then you partner with the right Shariah compliant solution. This needs to be done in a private consultation because every members situation is unique
@DhevanNaicker thank you for responding...I understand. it's a lot to consider especially when the information from the GEPF is not very clear and the rules keep changing.
@farida, I know exactly how you feel because most members share this with me. We have a new Masterclass launching next month. It’s designed to be easier to understand and provide better clarity. I also address Shariah compliant solutions. Keep an eye out on your emails for when we launch
Very insightful. Thank you very much. Do you assist government employees only or even those outside of government like those who belong to Sanlam Pension Fund? I love your content
@Katlego, we specialize exclusively in solutions for South African government employees. However, you can use some of the content to plan your retirement
Please click on the title
How can I watch the full videos?
Tell me more about resigning vs pension
@laetitia, you can find out all the details in our Retire vs Resign Masterclass. Click here for free access: www.retirevsresign.co.za
I think you need to also consider that there is an incentive that comes with the offer for early retirement
Thank you for the insightful video and explaining it so simply. How does SARS calculate the formula when multiple withdrawals have been made between different years that used different/adjusted tax schedules. So for example, a person took a retirement lump sum of R 450 000 in 2022, when the first R500 000 was taxed at 0%. Now in 2024 again a second retirement lump sum of R 100 000 is taken. What is the formula applied by SARS in this case?
@peegee, SARS could add the previous amounts, depending on when it was withdrawn
Hi Dhevan, i need your email i need to make an appointment
@thoko, You can pay for and book a private consult here: www.retirevsresign.co.za/consult/ Please take note of the requirements. Should you need any help with this, please email retirewell@retiresa.co.za
Hi Dhevan, I see all of these fears at work every week.
@inus, these are opportunities for you to learn from the mistakes others have made and ensure your planning is secure
Can you help in my late 30s I'm a teacher
@enie, the solutions we have are for members who are 55 and older
I retired at 52 and honestly, I wish I’d done it sooner. The 9-to-5 grind always steals your freedom for a paycheck that barely scratches the surface. My advice? If you’re in your late 30s or early 40s, start saving for FIRE now (Financial Independence, Retire Early.) And if you’re in your 50s, invest smartly and break free from relying on your job. Market trends, like the Trump Effect, have made millions for many, including me. Stay focused, stay consistent, and remember financial freedom is within reach if you make it a priority.
Exactly My point! The 9 to 5 grind is just not worth it the stress and low payoff. What specific steps did you take to break free?
Working with Lorrie Greta Hillard , a financial advisor, was a game changer. She helped me refine my savings strategy, including retirement planning, and provided expert guidance on investments and budgeting to maximize my savings.
Can I retain my medical aid gems if i retire at 59 in South Africa
@Cherry, you should be able to retain your medical aid if you retire
I need his email
@thoko, retirewell@retiresa.co.za
Is it better to retire early or resign
@Cherry, it depends on your specific situation. Have you watched the Retire vs Resign Masterclass?
Don't simply retire from something; have something to retire to. Start saving, keep saving, and stick to investments. Everyone should have BTC in their portfolio.
It’s really heartbreaking to see how inflation and recession impact low-income families. The cost of living keeps rising, and many struggle just to meet basic needs, let alone save or invest. It’s a reminder of the importance of finding ways to create financial opportunities. You've helped me a lot sir Brian! Imagine i invested $50,000 and received $190,500 after 14 days
Absolutely! Profits are possible, especially now, but complex transactions should be handled by experienced market professionals.
Finding yourself a good broker is as same as finding a good wife, which you go less stress, you get just enough with so much little effort at things
Brian demonstrates an excellent understanding of market trends, making well informed decisions that leads to consistent profit
nice! once you hit a big milestone, the next comes easier. How can i reach him, if you don't mind me asking?
Great Content
Thanks for this understood, my question is does it apply to all pension funds or just GEPF. Don't all pension funds invest as a pool?
@Enver, this applies to pension funds that are defined benefit funds. Simply put, it means that the pension fund operates with formulas.
Worried about market fluctuations.
@ramesh, this is good because you know what you don’t want. When doing your planning ensure that your advisor/planner shows you funds BEFORE you sign. This way you can see what’s working and what isn’t.
What is the most effective investment approach for a newcomer to the financial market📊📈
My CFA Shirley Mae Crisler is a renowned figure in her line of work. I recommend researching her credentials further... She has many years of experience and is a valuable resource for anyone looking to navigate the financial market..
Please educate me. I've come across this name before. Now I am interested.
This is correct, Shirley's strategy has normalized winning trades for me also, and it's a huge milestone for me looking back to how it all started..
Yes, I agree with you. Her platform is wonderful, and her strategies are exceptional
She's mostly on Telegram, using the username
If only I knew this
@Zelda, you should still be able to adjust now. Reach out to your financial advisor/planner
thanks for the video
As an advisor myself, there's been a lot of skepticism coming from GEPF employees since the announcement of the 2 pot system. Unfortunately good news is always overwhelmed by bad news. We are being called liars and we are said to be scammers who mislead people to take their monies, yet no one can provide a single example of this. Keep on educating, it's much needed. Many GEPF members are in the dark with regards to how their fund works and what other options are there besides retiring withing GEPF.
Very informative, thank you Dehven.
Can you put me on wuppp
Can you have topic about the 2025/26 volunteer early pension if it’s true about no penalty?
Impressed it’s true the formulas wl become a problem in long run but we just hoping for the best.
Could you please explain the last minute of this video, the portion about taxes? I was under the impression that the income tax system is progressive, meaning that as your income increases, the rate of tax you pay also increases. However, you do not pay the higher rate on your entire salary when you move into a higher tax bracket. Instead, you only pay the higher tax rate on the portion of your income that falls within that bracket. Did I misunderstand this?
@sergio, you are right, it is progressive. The point is that by accessing money from the savings pot, it could push you up to a higher tax bracket
What would happen if employed after 98? As I was employed in December 98 want to resign @ 60 next year December 2025
@Ethel, in this case you would not be entitled to the pre98 tax free benefit. However, all the other aspects for resignation will apply
Lie You can access more than 30k…30k was on the starting month only.
@conquer, you can verify by reaching out to the fund
@ you do that. The money is now growing every month. There’s only a minimum withdrawal of 2k.
@conquer7259 The R30000 was the seeding capital. It is the limit that could be transferred to the savings pot as a seed capital. The amount of money that one can access is now more than R30 000 for a person who has not withdrawn. This is so as it has been increased by contribution in September and October as well as returns.
Your services are of importance to us because we did not know how to save our hard earned cash.I about to exit the education system I would want you to assist me on my resignation.Thanks.
@reuben, email retirewell@retiresa.co.za to enquire on booking a private consult

@Cherry, you can. You will need to get an updated statement based on your figures at age 59
Iam 58 want to retire at 59 20 years service
@Cherry, which route are you leaning towards retirement or resignation?
I didn't see you minus the first 500 000 from tax
@nomalanga, if you follow the tax tables, SARS has already factored the tax free amount
Thanks for such question I also Wanted to ask such.May I kindly request your email or contact number if possible there are more personal stuff I need to ask .

Hi Dhevan Thank you to you and your team for assisting those members that are affiliated to GEPF. Your advice is excellent and makes financial sense. I just pray and hope that members take the advice given and dont allow the state to short change members for their years of sacrifice and commitment. Goodluck with this venture.
